"Heracross, use Submission!" Bugsy commanded his Fighting-Type Bug Pokemon to attack Duncan's Houndoom before succumbing to the burn. The Heracross grabbed Houndoom, and pulled it into a hold and slammed it down, hurting itself slightly in the process. Duncan's Houndoom fell to the ground, unconscious, but so did Bugsy's Heracross, being hurt by the burn, as well as the recoil.

"Congratulations, Duncan... You've defeated my three Pokemon using only two. You've earned the Hive Badge, cousin." Bugsy conceded the victory to his cousin. "Great job."

"Hooray!" Beth said cheerfully, her Oddish bouncing excitedly. "That was a great match!"

"She's right." Magnus agreed with his niece. "You both did very well for yourselves."

"Thanks Bugs," Duncan shook his hand and faced the others smiling, "Couldn't have done it without the support guys thanks for that."

"Good match, guys." Sylas said, approaching them and giving Duncan a rough pat on the back. "And congrats on Houndour evolving." He gave a big, sincere smile.

"I had a good time, Duncan." Bugsy addressed his cousin. "Thanks for giving me such a pleasant match."

Bugsy handed Duncan a shiny metal token, the Hive Badge, and smiled broadly.

"So what are you guys planning on doing the rest of the day? How about we hang out for a while?" Bugsy asked them. "You guys up to it?"

"You guys can..." Magnus said in response, about to leave. "I've got some training to do today... And before that, I have to pick up some things that are getting sent to me. I'll definitely see you tomorrow for our battle, though."

"Looking forward to it, Magnus." Bugsy nodded, as his brother-in-law left the Gym. "What about you guys? Fancy a trip to the Well?"

All that day, and through most of the night, Magnus trained with his Pokemon in the forest. Beating Bugsy was not his objective, but a stepping stone that would give him momentum.

The next morning, after a night spent in the forest, he was ready. He met Bugsy at the Gym, and the two stood across from each other in the arena.

"One-on-one, Bugsy. Each using our strongest Pokemon." Magnus said to his brother-in-law. Quillz was already standing next to her Trainer faithfully.

"Scizor, let's go!" Bugsy called out his Scizor. "Alright, begin! Giga Impact!"

The Scizor wasted no time, readying its most powerful attack to take Quillz out again. This time, however, Magnus was ready.

"Quillz, use Protect." Quillz placed a barrier over herself as Scizor released the attack, blocking the forceful charge in its tracks. "Eruption."

Quillz roared a fierce cry, unleashing an infernal rain upon the battlefield, all moving in against the Bug-and-Steel Type. Bugsy took a few steps back, gazing upon the raw power of the attack with a healthy level of respect, and a slight twinge of fear.

As Quillz drew the flames back, the Scizor was seen lying upon the ground. It was unconscious, and scarred with high-level burns. Even the grass and trees around the arena were slightly wilted from the heat, some even scorched and blackened.
Magnus patted Quillz on the head lovingly, rubbing under her chin. Magnus removed something from around Quillz' neck, a piece of Azalea Charcoal, and placed it in his backpack before returning Quillz to her pokeball.

Bugsy handed the Hive Badge over to his brother-in-law, but was afraid to look into his eyes. Magnus left, then, and headed back to the rest of the group at the Pokemon Center.

"We're leaving." Magnus said to the rest of the group. "Brandon, I got a call from Joel in Celadon. He says he wants you to head back to Kanto and meet him in Saffron City. I want you to take Rhiss to Vermillion so that you can get him back to Sinnoh, as well. Take Eric with you, as well. I know he wants to come with me, but I can't let him come with me any further. My mind is made up."

"You got it, Magnus." Brandon said, slightly peeved. "I'm not gonna argue with you, not when you're so adamant about it."

"Duncan, Sylas, I know I can trust you guys to keep going with me, regardless of what I say." Magnus said to them. "Dani, you're welcome to come with us, but I am going to let you know that there will be difficulty on the road ahead. Be prepared."

The group all got ready in their own way, and said their goodbyes to their family in Azalea. Magnus' group would continue to travel through Ilex Forest and onward to Goldenrod City. Team Rocket had failed to hold Saffron in Kanto forever... no doubt that they would try and take Goldenrod, at the other end of the Magnet Train tracks.

[HEADING=1]Chapter 6: Life and Death[/HEADING]

Magnus, Duncan, Sylas, and Dani were already well into Ilex Forest when they made camp that night. In the morning, after eating, they continued on, wanting to get as much distance covered as they could.

Unfortunately, when they reached a certain point in the path, they came upon a large series of web traps blocking their path forward.

"Sylas... Can you see if Vandal can cut through this stuff?" Magnus asked his friend. "And have him stay out, as well... I have a feeling that things are gonna get a bit hostile past this point."

"Yeah, I'm sure he can." Sylas said, taking the pokeball from his backpack strap and releasing Vandal. The scyther appeared before them and buzzed his wings briefly and looked at them.

What's happening?

"Web traps, can you cut through them?"

I'm sure I can.

He turned to the closest web and sliced through it, causing the silk to sag and fall away. He shook his blade a couple times, trying to unstick a couple stray strands, but to no avail. He glanced back at them, then cut through the next one.

"So what are we expecting in the next city?" Sylas asked Magnus, watching Vandal clear a path for them.

"If all goes well, we'll encounter very little in Goldenrod. We'll tackle the Gym, maybe hit up the Bug Catching Contest at the park, and then move on." Magnus answered Sylas as Vandal cut through the webs. "If we're not lucky... Well, if we're not lucky, then at least we know how to fight our way through tough situations."

The group continued on, the concentration of the Spider Webs becoming increasingly dense as they moved further into the woods. Magnus had to bring out Salad to help Vandal Cut through the webs, as the sticky silk was partially sticking to the Scyther's exoskeleton.

"Something seems odd... Ariados and Spinarak aren't even native to this forest." Magnus pondered aloud. "Garnet, come on out."

Magnus called out his Quilava to walk along with them, just in case...

Duncan saw Magnus pull out one of his Pokemon and quickly did the same. It was odd that the Spider Pokemon would be in this forest, hopefully it was nothing bad, just a trainer who was working with his pokemon. He moved slowly, letting Houndoom walk beside him.

Sylas grunted in agreement to Magnus, thinking of how trouble seemed to be finding them everywhere they went. He watched Vandal and Salad cut a path, without really paying attention. His mind was elsewhere, thinking of how he had no idea how he had gotten into the situations they had been through, and how he would never have expected any of it to matter to him.

I don't usually care about anything, just . . . myself, I guess. Never thought of it that way, though.

Dani wasn't so sure about having to fight through tough situations. She wondered who these people really were, why it was they thought they could get through tough situations.

"So... Where have you guys been going through tough situations?"

"None of the others mentioned it to you?" Magnus asked Dani, slightly surprised. "Well... Here's the short of it. I'm probably very high on Team Rocket's Wanted List. I've pissed off a few Executives, and I'm tracking down the Hitman who is responsible for the death of my girlfriend, and near-death of another one of my old friends."

As the group moved deeper into the woods, the Spider Webs became more tightly spaced, and covered more area, eventually reaching the bottoms of the trees. They were beginning to see a few Spinarak here and there, but not enough to make this expanse of webbing. It didn't seem like they were disturbing any of the natural ecosystem, as most of the other Pokemon behaved like the Webs had been part the forest for as long as they had.

"I was involved in the battles of Celadon City and Saffron City in Kanto." Magnus continued to explain to her. "My hair was blond, then, but I dyed it so they wouldn't be able to recognize me without getting close enough to see my face. Of course, not that it matters now... They know I'm fighting again, and word will spread any time my appearance, or traveling party changes..."

"I don't think I've even heard that much of your story until now, Magnus." Sylas remarked solemnly. He had gotten out his own sword by now and was assisting in cutting down the webs.

"Oh... You're quite the dangerous guy to be around then..." Dani said quietly, almost muttering it.

"Is it safe for us to be with you? I mean... The Rockets are hardly nice people at the best of times."

"I'm not going to lie to you, Dani... It's not safe to be with me. That's why I started my journey in Johto alone, to get away from it all. I didn't want anyone else to have to deal with my problems... That's why I sent Eric and Rhiss away with Brandon."

Magnus sighed, breathing out a cloud of white steam against the cool air as they walked along the forest path.
They heard rustling in the trees around them, and continued walking taking a turn down left down a fork in the road.

"Dead end..." Magnus muttered quietly. "Looks like we have to go... back."

Magnus paused in his speech when he noticed that there was a new Spider Web that was in their path from the way they came in... It hadn't been there before, and it had been made in a matter of minutes.

A snap and a twang was heard coming from the trees, and Salad shot a stream of Bullet Seeds in the direction of the sound, one of them intercepting an arrow and falling to the ground with a harmless thud. The shaft of the arrow was solid white, with black fletchings.

"Show yourself, you sick bastard!" Magnus yelled loudly to the darkness, his voice shaking. He looked around, and saw more figures coming out of the woods. Several Team Rocket Grunts stood around them, Four with a pair of Spinarak hanging besides them, and two with an Ariados each. "Come on out, so I can see your face before killing you!"

Another arrow was fired, and again intercepted by a Bullet Seed.

"Gentlemen... you can take care of the pups." A rugged voice said from the trees. "But the Lead Dog is mine."

"Shutup, you murderer! Come back here and face me!" Magnus shouted furiously and ran into the woods after the voice, his Pokemon following behind him. Dani, Sylas, and Duncan were left in the clearing to deal with the six Grunts and their Pokemon.

"Magnus, where are you- what's going on?" Sylas yelled after him as Magnus dashed away. But he quickly disappeared into the woods, and the grunts started to approach them.

"Back off." Sylas said threateningly, drawing his sword as Vandal stepped up in front of him. A pair of spinarak immediately fired String Shots at him, netting the scyther despite his attempts to slice through them.

"Bore, Dig!" Magnus called out his Onix to dive underground as he was chasing after the Hitman. The Rock Snake Pokemon descended into the earth, his dorsal spike sticking up from the ground as he moved in front of the Hitman, causing him to stumble and trip. "Now, Bind! But don't crush him!"

The huge Onix rose from the ground, and coiled around the Hitman, restraining him from movement.

"You bastard..." Magnus said as he caught up with his Pokemon, Quillz shortly behind him. "You fucking murderer! I've been searching for you for months... and I've finally got you."

"Hehehe... Go ahead kid... What're you gonna do, try and give me a lecture? Curse me out? If I were you, mate, I'd kill me right here and now, no talking. I'd slit my throat where I stood, and let me bleed dry."

Magnus shot daggers at the Hitman with his glare, and without turning his head, spoke.

"Quillz... Go help the others. I can handle him..." He said in a sinister tone of voice.

"Magnus..." Quillz said concernedly. "Don't lose your humanity... Kill him, but do not do so in anger."

"Quillz... I said go." Magnus repeated his command. "I don't want you to see me do this."

"Yes sir..." Quillz accepted Magnus' orders, and turned back to help the other three Trainers against the Rocket Grunts.
Magnus looked the Hitman in the eye, and pulled his knife from its case on his belt.

"You killed her..." Magnus muttered angrily. "You killed her in cold blood. She was no threat to you, and you took her life."

"Not just her, mate... I found that little brat with the Lucario. Him and his blue cur are both dead." The Hitman muttered. "I'm sorry that I pissed you off, and upset you, mate... But I don't discriminate when I take targets. Of course, I don't blame you for wanting to take your revenge."

Magnus looked down at the Hitman, and brought the blade of his knife up to his enemy's throat.

"You have made a life of taking the same from others. You have taken from me the girl I love, and I shall now take your life. Your death will be a message to Team Rocket... Anyone who crosses me, will suffer."

"Do it quick, then..." The Hitman said, still struggling against the Rock Snake Pokemon.

**********

Quillz rushed through the woods back towards Sylas, Duncan, and Dani, to help against the Rocket Grunts. She broke through the trees, and saw the others in battle against the Rockets' Pokemon. Duncan's Houndoom blasted a few Spinarak with a Flamethrower, and his Ponyta slammed into an Ariados with a powerful Flame Wheel. Sylas and Vandal were engaged with the other Ariados, being caught in Spider Webs and String Shots. With a powerful Eruption, Quillz took out the Spinarak in a rain of fire, and singed away most of the webs.

Houndoom took down the first Ariados, and Ponyta and Flare took out the other one. The Grunts reached into their coats, and prepared to pull out handguns, but were knocked down to the ground by a Swift.

"If you value your lives..." Quillz roared aggressively, clawing at. "Then flee, before I send you to a fiery death."

Though they could not understand her fluently, Quillz' intent was more than clear, as the Grunts cast off their Rocket-Insignia caps, and fled as quickly as they could, leaving their Pokemon behind.

**********

Magnus had Bore loosen his hold on the Hitman, so that he would not hit his Pokemon when he killed the man who killed the girl he loved, and one of his friends.

"Goodbye, wretched man." Magnus said, raising the knife to his left.

Suddenly, a flash of red light, and a streak of purple knocked Magnus back on his ass, and knocked Bore to the ground. The Hitman's Gliscor had escaped its pokeball, and had saved its Trainer, picking him up and carrying him away.

"NO! GET BACK HERE!" Magnus shouted at the top of his lungs. "Salad, use Bullet Seed! Garnet, use Ember!"

Magnus called out his Bellsprout and his Quilava, the Pokemon firing their attacks in the direction of the Fang Scorpion Pokemon, but unable to reach at the altitude through the trees. Magnus fell to his knees, fury flowing through his veins as he screamed in anguish to the sky, loud enough for the entire forest to hear.
Magnus sat there, on his knees, cursing the sky and weeping... His vengeance had been so close, close enough that he almost felt the hot blood on the knife... And now it was gone. Stolen from in front of him.

Dani sent out her Flare and Shelly.

Flare attacked one of the Spinaraks with an ember. It wasn't very powerful, but it luckily managed to burn the Spinarak. Togepi was attacked by an Ariados, but it's string shot narrowly avoided it's head. In return Shelly used charm, and the Ariados started putting in less effort, despite it's trainers abuse and shouts.

Suddenly out of the woods came Magnus' Quilava. Dani wondered if it had been sent to help, or if Magnus was in trouble. Quillz started attacking, so she assumed it must have been the former.

Duncan saw that Quillaz had left Magnus which meant one of two things, he was ok and wanted her to help, or there had been no chance of saving him and he sent her to help them. He feared the latter and saw that the Grunts were beginning to flee. He used the opportunity to get Ponyta to burn down one of the webs a and he set Houndoom to find Magnus. He followed his Pokemon through the woods until he came upon a weeping Magnus. He saw the knife in his hand and the Hitman gone. It was easy for him to draw the conclusion.

He sat down beside the weeping man and spoke slowly, "Death...is a horrible thing to accept sometimes. It makes us do crazy things, go beyond what we thought our limits were. It can strengthen, or weaken us. What needs to be remembered is the memories we had with those people before they left us. We need to remember who they were and who they helped us to be."

He took one final breath before delivering the most important part of this talk, "I don't know who you lost, but I don't think your loved one wanted you to become a killer over it. Revenge only opens new wounds. Heal and move on Magnus, you're only killing yourself by doing this."
