"Duncan... I can't just move on." Magnus said to his friend. "That man killed the girl I loved, as well as one of my friends and his Pokemon. I have to stop him and kill him, before he kills any of the others..."

Magnus rose to his feet, putting his knife back in its case on his belt, tears flowing down his cheeks.

"You said I need to let the wounds heal?" Magnus repeated Duncan's advice. "I wish I could... but these wounds are infected, Duncan. You have to open an infection and let it seep, before you can treat it and let it heal properly. If you don't, the infection will get into your blood, and could potentially kill you."

Magnus sighed, and began walking in the direction of the others, whom he heard rushing through the woods towards him.
Magnus walked over to Bore's unconscious body, and returned it to the pokeball.

"Thank you, Bore... You did well." Magnus thanked his Pokemon, before calling back Garnet and Salad as well, and then turning back to Duncan. "If I don't stop this man, he will continue to kill those he was hired to... If he can continue, Team Rocket might make him target you, or Sylas, or Dani... Or even worse, they might make him target our family... They might make him target Farrah, or even Beth, just to get to us!"

Sylas and Vandal watched coldly as Quillz chased off all the Rocket grunts. Cowards.

Many of their pokemon simply stood and looked around in confusion. Sylas took a step forward and swung his sword threateningly. "Get the fuck out of here!" he shouted. The spider pokemon turned and scurried off into the bushes.

Returning his sword to it's sheath on his back, he looked towards the source of Magnus's shout. Duncan had already rushed in after him.

"We should go after him." he muttered to nobody in particular. Vandal nodded and cut into the foliage, dashing in with Sylas behind him. Before long they found Duncan and Magnus.

"What happened?" Sylas asked. "Why did you run off?"

"This doesn't look good" Said a trainer as he flew above a dense forest on top of a large black dragon Pokemon. Flames erupted up from the forest in short random bursts. The Trainer shielded his mouth from the rising smoke with his forearm.

"Fly lower. This may be the person we are looking for" Commanded the trainer, his voice muffled by his forearm. His Pokemon nodded once slowly before performing a swift byet graceful dive. The Pokemon's tail nearly touched the trees which would have been fine if a flame wasn't at the tip of it.

"Charcoal watch your tail, we don't need anymore smo-" Instructed the trainer before being cut off by a loud scream. The Pokemon looked at his trainer briefly for instruction. The trainer nodded and immediately after he did the Pokemon flew in the direction of the scream at it's top speed. They had a connection with eachother, they had been together for almost their whole lives and knew eachother well enough to determine what the other was thinking.

After a minute or two of searching the pokemon spotted a group of people and pointed them out to his trainer. "Land Charcoal. We don't who these people are though so keep your guard up." said the trainer in a serious voice.

The black dragon Pokemon followed his trainers command with out question, he trusted the man wiht his life. As the Pokemon hit the ground near the people a large bang resonated throughout the forest. Cracks formed at it's feet from the immense weight. The Pokemon lifted it's head so that it was at it's full height. It was larger than most of it's species, maybe even the largest. Most of it's kind were red and orange but this Pokemon was a dark black and grey. Deep scars covered every inch of it's body except for it's wings, this made it looked quite horrific. It raised it's head and spewed flames into the air before roaring, this was done mainly to intimidate the people incase they were enemies.

This Pokemon's name was Charcoal. This Pokemon was a Charizard.

The trainer jumped off Charcoal's back and strolled in front of the fierce Pokemon as it studied the people. One of them fit the description Elm had given him. He leaned towards the green eyed man.

"Hi there. Your name wouldn't happen to be Magnus?" Said the trainer as his expression changed from a serious one to a cheerful smile.

"I ran off... because I wanted to kill that man." Magnus explained to Sylas and Dani as they reached him. Quillz rushed over and stood beside her Trainer protectively, and nuzzled his shoulder. "I wanted to kill that man, for taking the life of one of my friends, and the life of the girl I loved. I wanted to stop him before he could kill anyone else... and I failed."

Magnus took a deep breath, his voice hoarse. He looked at his friends and allies, and began to explain more.

"That man... he was the Hitman hired by Team Rocket to kill me, and the others who were traveling with me in Kanto. So far, he has succeeded in getting two of his targets. My late girlfriend, Aari; and a boy named Jeffrey, and very likely his Lucario as well. The others are spread out in Kanto, except for Brandon who should be near Violet City by now."

Magnus heard the beating of powerful wings, and saw bursts of flame in the sky above them. He looked up, and saw a black form descending upon them, and landing nearby. Quillz stood in between Magnus and the new arrival, her flames standing fierce in a warning.

Magnus looked and saw the huge, black Charizard, and the tall muscular Trainer dismounting from its back. The Trainer looked at the group, and addressed them.

"Hi there... One of your names wouldn't happen to be Magnus, would it?" He asked them, his voice slightly cheerful.

"I am..." Magnus stood, leaning on his Typhlosion for stability. "I am Magnus... Who are you?"

Magnus had never met this person before... Yet, he did not seem hostile, and Quillz did not seem to think he was a threat, as she had lowered he flames slightly.

"Who are you... and how do you know my name?" Magnus asked the young man again.

"A friend of a friend." Said the trainer as he strecthed his arms and yawned. "So I guess that makes me a friend doesn't it?"

"Friend or not you can call me Shade." Said Shade with a smile as he started rummage through the various pockets of his jacket. "To answer why I know your name. I have something, no, someone for you".

A black object flew across the sky somewhere between Kanto and Johto. It stood out because of the contrast between it an the cloudy sky but someone in the water below wouldn't have been able to determine what it was. Though unlikely the object in the sky was in fact a Charizard. Although usually red and orange this particular Charizard was black and dark grey. The Charizard's body was covered in large, deep scars every but it's wings. Another peculiar thing about this Charizard was it was very large for its species being at least a few feet taller the most of it's kin.

Atop the fierce looking fire Pokemon sat a trainer dressed mostly in black. He climbed up the neck of the Charizard and rested his head against the Charizard's head.

"Isn't this weather beautiful Charcoal?" Said the trainer to the Pokemon with a smile, mist forming from his mouth every time he exhaled.

"Chaaar. Almost as beautiful as the splash you'd make if I dropped you." Growled the dragon like
Pokemon with a contemptuous look on his face.

"Awww don't be like that," Said the trainer with smirk "I'm sorry it's cold but flying is the quickest way to New Bark Town and it is your fault we're running late."

The Charizard stared at the trainer for I moment before slowly nodding in agreement and turning around to focus on flying. Soon the coast of Johto came into view and the black Pokemon dove slightly and started to fly close the ocean. The trainer surveyed the port positioned on the coastline as they flew over it. A boat had just arrived so the whole place was extremely busy. People darted around quickly each on their own journey, salesmen walked through the crowds offering goods to the new arrivals and there were even a few trainers battling each other.

"Charizard! I want a battle!" roared Charcoal as he landed on the ground with such force the it cracked the pavement.

Charcoal's trainer let out a sigh and said "Well I guess you've earned a little fun after that flight but we need to get the New Bark Town as soon as it's over."

It didn't take long for the duo to find a trainer eager to battle them and someone the be the referee. The challenger looked to be in his late teens wore jeans and a dark blue jacket with light blue waves on it. His hair was mostly black with the only exception being his fringe which had dark blue streaks in it.

"This will be a two Pokemon battle, the first trainer to defeat both of the opposing trainers Pokemon win. Today's battle will be between Sam Nami from Cerulean City and....who are you?" Said the Referee.

"Me?" Said Charcoal's trainer with a grin "I'm Shade. Shade Tonkin from Celadon City!"

The referee nodded at Shade before raising his hand in the air. "Let the battle begin!" Yelled the Referee as he brought his hand down.

"Gooooo Syrus!" Yelled Sam as he threw a great ball onto the ground. A second later a yellow duck Pokemon emerged from the ball in a beam of red.

Shade looked up at Charcoal with a smirk. "I'm guessing your not that keen on fighting a Psyduck?" Shade joked already knowing the answer. "Well in the case... Lets go Quake!" Yelled Shade as he held up a Pokeball.

A blinding red light flashed and when it ceased there was a small green Pokemon standing opposite Sam's Psyduck. The Poke wasmon Shade's Larvitar called Quake. Quake was a darker green than most of its species, this may have been because Charcoal was his father. Unlike his father Quake was very timid spending most of his time in either his Pokeball or Shade's backpack.

"Quake use Bite!" Commanded Shade as the unusual Larvitar ran it's opponent.

"Dodge it Syrus!" Yelled Sam as Quake neared the Psyduck. The Psyduck tried to move to side but stumbled and fell to the ground. Quake bit down hard on the Psyduck's back causing it the cry out in pain.

"Syrus use scratch then follow up with a confusion!" Said Sam frustrated as the Psyduck turned and scratched the Larvitar across it's face. Quake fell on his back and looked up to see that the Psyduck's eyes were glowing blue.

"Counter that Confusion with Screech!" Shade yelled to Quake as he covered his ears. Quake let out an ear-splitting screech causing the Psyduck to lose it's concentration and fall to the ground in pain.

"That's enough Syrus!" Yelled Sam as he withdrew the Psyduck from the battle "Now go Tsu!"
Sam took a Pokeball from his belt and released a large Pokemon with a twirl pattern on it onto the field.

"That's a Poliwrath, they're part fighting type so Quake won't stand a chance," Shade mumbled to himself as he held up a Pokeball and withdrew his Larvitar. Shade looked at Charcoal who had been standing at his side during the battle. "Your turn big guy," Said Shade as he patted his Charizard on the back.

"Really? You're going to use a fire type?" Said Sam as he laughed "Tsu use Double Slap!"
The Poliwrath sprinted at Charcoal and hit him twice in the stomach causing him to stumble back slightly.

"Charcoal use Wing Attack!" ordered Shade as he pointed at the Poliwrath. Charcoal step forward and used all of his weight to hit the Poliwrath with great power. The Poliwrath was sent rolling back by the attack.

"Damn! Being a fighting type means that flying type moves like Wing Attack are super effective!" Cursed Sam "Well we can use super effective moves too, Tsu use Bubblebeam"! The Poliwrath shot bubbles at Charcoal who shielded himself with his wings.

"Good work Tsu! Keep using Bubblebeam!" Said Sam triumphantly thinking he had won. Charcoal continued to shield himself from the Poliwrath attacks but was getting weaker by the second.

Shade stared up at the clouds in anticipation, he had a plan but it all relied on how lucky he was.
He smiled deviously as the clouds moved and revealed the sun. Light illuminated to before full battlefield and had secured victory for Shade. Charcoal continued the shield himself from the Bubblebeam for a few moments before roaring and flying up into the sky.

"Running are we?" Taunted Sam "It doesn't matter; your Charizard won't be able to withstand another attack from Tsu". "Tsu use Bubblebeam again!" yelled Sam as his Pokemon shot bubbles into the air at Charcoal.

"Running? Think again!" yelled Shade "Charcoal us Solarbeam!" Charcoal's eyes glowed green before he released a huge, identical coloured beam at the Poliwrath. Charcoal's attack destroyed the Bubblebeam and hit the Poliwrath with immense force causing it to fly backwards. The Poliwrath struggled for a moment but then collapsed onto the ground.

"Poliwrath is unable to battle, Shade wins," Said the Referee after watching the collapsed Poliwrath for a few moments.

"Well it has been fun but we really have to go!" yelled Shade as he gave Charcoal an Oran Berry and climbed onto Charcoal's back. They then flew to New Bark Town quickly, passing over some fields with snow covered trees.

When they arrived in New Bark Town Shade withdrew Charcoal. Charcoal's Pokeball was the colour of ash. It had been burnt on several occasions and should probably have broken already but like it's occupant it had withstood great damage over the years without being weakened. It didn't take Shade long to find the towns laboratory because of the towns size. New Bark Town was probably the smallest town Shade had been to but that isn't saying much considering the he had spent most of his life in the city.

Shade entered the laboratory and saw a man wearing glasses working at the far end. The lab was filled with Pokemon research equipment and books, it certainly wasn't the kind of Shade would usually be. Shade walked up to the working man and poked his arm to get his attention. The man turned quickly to Shade looking startled.

"Wh-who are you?" He stuttered as he adjusted his glasses.

"Sorry for scaring you sir," Apologised Shade "My names Shade, Professor Oak sent me."

"Yes I remember being told about you Shade, your the one with the "shiny" Pokemon, My name is Professor Elm" Said the man as he studied Shade.

"Yeah tha-." Said Shade before being cut off.

"Weren't you meant to be here yesterday?" Asked Elm

"Yes Professor but something came up," Answered Shade nervously.

"Never mind lets see these "shiny" Pokemon of yours," Said Elm curiously.

Shade released Charcoal and Quake. Charcoal had to duck slightly so his head would not hit the ceiling and Quake being very shy clutched onto Shade's leg. Elm looked half amazed and half horrified as he looked at Charcoal.

"T-they are quite a spectacle," Stuttered Elm as he looked up at Charcoal.

"They are indeed" Said Shade as he laughed "How long do you need them for?"

"Well I understand you are of need of them so I'll try get as much information I can overnight" Said Elm.

"Sounds good, anything else you need?" Asked Shade

"Well now that you mention it there is something you can do" Replied Elm as he grabbed a Pokeball from his desk. From the Pokeball emerged a small blue crocodile Pokemon.

"This is a Totodile and I was wondering if you could look after it" said Elm

"Aren't Totodiles meant to be given to beginner trainers" Asked Shade.

"Normally yes but this Totodile is a bit to much for a new trainer," Said Elm as he picked up the Totodile. After being picked up the Totodile slashed a massive hole in Elm's lab coat. "See what I mean?" Said Elm as he withdrew the Totodile.

"Don't worry Professor I think I can handle him" Said Shade as he took the Pokeball from Elm.

"I'll be back in the morning!" Shade yelled to Elm as he left with his new Pokemon. He stared at the Pokeball containing the Totodile. "I think I'll call you Shred," Shade said with a smile.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next morning Professor Elm gave Shade something to deliver. A Pokeball that he was meant to give to a trainer called Magnus.

Shade's face lit up as he found what he was looking for in his pockets. He pulled out an ordinary Pokeball and tossed it slowly to Magnus.

Magnus calmly took the pokeball from Shade, and pulled out his Pokedex. The scan showed that it was his "Shiny" Typhlosion, Red. It seemed Professor Elm had finished his work the the Pokemon, and was promptly returning him.

"Thank you, Shade..." Magnus thanked the Trainer. "Thank you for bringing Red back to me..."

Magnus called out his "Shiny" Typhlosion out, and patted it affectionately on the head. Quillz walked over, and began to nuzzle her son's ear, grooming him in a maternal fashion.

"It seems I'm not the only one with alternately colored Pokemon, eh?" Magnus commented. "Your Charizard is a beautiful specimen. You've obviously been in a great many dangerous battles."

Vandal hissed and spread his wings out as the large charizard came crashing down through the forest. Wes backed away, drawing his sword. He was prepared for trouble after the run-in with the Rockets and wasn't taking chances on making it double.

But the rider dismounted and approached Magnus casually enough. Listening to him talk, Wes gathered that he wasn't an enemy and sheathed his sword. Vandal was still poised for attack, though, so Wes carefully put a hand on his pokemon's shoulder. "Calm down."

They approached the pair just as Magnus let out a second Typholosion, this one red in colour as opposed to the deep blue of most of their kind.

"What's all this?" Wes asked them casually, indicating the abundance of strangely-coloured pokemon.

Dani approached towards the man talking to Magnus, and his black Charizard. She'd never seen a Charizard that colour before, it seemed strange.

She heard Wes asking about the Charizard, and the red Typhlosion. He'd beat her to it, not that it mattered. She was more interested in the answer. And she wanted to find out who the man was.

I'm at the top of a mountain and have been skiing all day so this will be a bit short, sorry

"Nothing that he couldn't handle" Said Shade as he patted the leg of his Charizard.
"Well, we have both let Professor Elm study our Pokemon to find out what makes them a different colour. Charcoal's colour has gotten him into a lot of trouble," Said Shade to Wes before sighing.
"His son is the same... well the same colour, besides that they are very different" Explained Shade.

"His son? You've bred him, then?" Magnus was interested, his tear-stained eyes drying; he was distracted by this new development. "If his offspring are 'Shiny', to use the common term, then that is evidence that there is a genetic factor to it. My own shiny Pokemon provide more evidence, as well."

Magnus looked at his cell-phone's display, looking at the time. It was about 3:20 PM... The Rockets had taken more of their time than he realized.

"Guys... I think we're safe for now." Magnus said to them. "Once we find a clearing, we can take a break to rest. We definitely need it, and... and I'll explain anything you want to ask me."

[HEADING=1]Chapter 7: Out of the Woods[/HEADING]

Magnus and the others in the group, including Shade, finally found a good spot for them to take a rest. They were almost out of the woods, and if they didn't stay too long here, they could make it out before before it got too late.

The fire was set quickly enough, and the group all relaxed for a few moments. Magnus was having difficulty looking the others in the eye... He wasn't sure what he'd say to them when they asked... But he had to say something. It was just too quiet.

"Are you guys going to give me the silent treatment for the rest of the night?" Magnus asked the others, feeling like he was being punished. "Look... I'm sorry I didn't tell you guys everything that was happening earlier. I should have mentioned it after we left Violet City. I just.. I just didn't know what to say. 'Oh yeah, guys, Team Rocket is trying to kill me, and their leader has a personal grudge against me.' What would you have said to that?"

"Sorry, Magnus." Sylas muttered, looking into the fire. He didn't know what else to say to him. He didn't know how he would have reacted to Magnus saying that to them, he couldn't say if he's have stayed with him or not.

But it took him most of the way back for him to figure out that it wasn't the secret that bothered him. It was what Magnus said before. "...I wanted to kill that man..."

"Have you killed people before, Magnus?"

"That... is a question." Magnus said solemnly, staring into the fire. He looked up at Sylas and nodded slowly. "Yes. I have killed people before."

Magnus tucked his legs into his chest, and wrapped his arms around them. He sighed and spoke up again.

"It was jarring... when I first killed a man." Magnus began. "It was different than killing a Pokemon. When I hunted, I was always grateful to the Pokemon for letting me take its life. But with a person... I stole it from them. I didn't have a choice, I had to kill them, or I would be killed. When I first killed someone... I was a bit stunned. Then, I steeled myself to be stronger-willed. When the time came that Team Rocket tried to invade Celadon City... I was ready. I killed dozens of men that day... My Pokemon and I, we killed them."

Magnus held his legs against his chest in the cold, watching his breath show against the crisp air.

Charcoal layed down on the ground, forming a large ring around his trainer with his tail. Shade put his backpack on the ground before laying against his large companion. His backpack rustled and a second later a small green hand emerged and unzipped the bag. The bag wobbled slightly before falling on its side causing a small green Pokemon to roll out.

"Well hello there Quake. Awake from your nap I see, let me just get you something to eat," Said Shade with a smile to the Pokemon before removing some berries from his pocket and placing the on the ground.

The green Pokemon called Quake smiled and started to eat the berries it's master had given it. Quake was suddenly startled by voices behind him and dropped one of his berries. He peeked over Charcoal's tail, standing on his toes, to see who was talking. His head just above the tail he watched the people wondering who they were. Shade reached out and grabbed Quake and the berries before putting them next to him.

"Taking a life is not something that should be taken lightly. All life is valuable whether it be that of a Caterpie or a trainer." Said Shade to Magnus coldly.

"A Pokemon's life is just as important as a humans... in the case of Team Rocket maybe even more important." Said Shade as he turned and smiled at Quake before atting him on the head.

As Duncan listened to Magnus, he realized how much the man had been hurt in his life. He then turned as the newcomer spoke to Magnus, "Taking a life is not something that should be taken lightly. All life is valuable whether it be that of a Caterpie or a trainer. A Pokemon's life is just as important as a humans... in the case of Team Rocket maybe even more important."

Duncan thought to respond, "Indeed a life is sacred, even a Pokemon's. But if you take a Pokemon's life for food, I believe that it is a noteworthy sacrifice. If you waste a Pokemon's life, then I take issue. Do I dare assume you make no difference between the two?"

Sylas sighed and rubbed his eyes at Magnus' answer. He had been expecting it, but still wasn't quite prepared to hear it.

His mind started to race with all the implications that would be involved with staying with this man. Team Rocket is out to get him. And I'm with him, they won't hesitate to kill me or my partners. I can defend myself, but . . . can I kill someone? He's killed dozens, will it happen again? What if he actually is killed?

He continued for another minute or two inside his head, before finally looking up at Magnus again. The arguments seemed to stop. Magnus didn't look like a killer, he definitely wasn't happy with what he'd done. A sudden pang of guilt hit Wes; he was considering leaving this man for no other reason than that he'd confessed his crimes to them. It's not like they were an evil group.

Through some unknown motivation, Wes stood up and walked around the fire, then sat down beside Magnus. He didn't add anything else to the conversation. He just felt like the right thing to do, as he leaned slightly against the man who seemed to have taken the role of their leader.

Magnus felt Sylas lean against him, and felt slightly comforted. He normally wasn't one for being very affectionate with anyone other than family, the only exception was Aari, really. Still, he sighed softly as he felt the pressure of his friend's body against his shoulder.

"Thanks, Sy..." Magnus said to his friend. "I'm not proud of what I've done... but if it protects innocent people, then I'm not ashamed."

Dani listened to Magnus speak, and then watched as Sylas got up and sat down next to Magnus. Dani wasn't really sure what to say or do, she was stunned. She knew that Magnus had said being around him was dangerous, but she hadn't expected this.

Then again, the fact that he had faced such adversity and came through it, it was quite comforting, in a strange way. She had always known that Team rocket were evil, but she had been somewhat ignorant to the extent of their crimes. She trusted that Magnus had no other choice but to kill those men.

"I'm not proud of what I've done... but if it protects innocent people, then I'm not ashamed."

"Protecting the innocent is important... You did the right thing, to help everyone." Dani tried to be reassuring, she had made up her mind about whether to leave, too. She had decided to stay.

"You guys need to know what kind of shit we're going to encounter on the road ahead." Magnus said to his allies. "There will be fighting. We'll be going up against huge odds, and your lives will be in danger. I want to thank you guys for sticking with me this far... and I hope that you'll continue with me, but I don't expect it of you."

Magnus looked up at Shade, and sighed.

"I want to apologize for dragging you into this, as well." Magnus told the newcomer. "But... something about you tells me that we're fighting the same struggle. If you'll accept, I'd like you to travel with us. We could use another powerful Trainer, and we'll need the help."

Shade picked up Quake before lying on the ground, cushioning his head with his hands. Quake curled up on his master?s chest and nuzzled his neck. Shade looked up at the sky, he loved being in the wilderness because it wasn?t polluted by the lights of cities/towns. It was pure, an image of natures perfection. A group of Hoothoot flew above him; the light from the sky caused them to become beautiful silhouettes outlined by a light blue glow. Shade smiled to himself for a moment, with all his travelling he hadn?t had a chance to just relax and observe.

He had zoned out but came back when he heard Magnus talking to him. He smiled as he listened, amused by what he heard.

?You talk like Team Rocket are just your problem, your burden. The truth is that they are a threat to everyone Magnus. From what I?ve gathered like me you are on their most wanted list. But although we fight them alone there are countless people exactly like us, people who want to fight back. We as a whole fight for those who can?t, those who without our help would perish. You are not alone in this Magnus, you never have been.? Explained Shade as he smile, still fixated on the night sky.

?Did we meet for a reason? Who knows. I however believe in destiny and it seems ours have become intertwined. I?ll stick by your side in your fight, no, our fight? Continued Shade making eye contact with Magnus with his last two words.
