Meat eaters should have to kill for their food.

Society is all about delegating the different aspects(of said society) to people who specialize in them so it's done more efficiently. Hunter-Gatherers started farming because that gave them more food faster, and allowed them to could settle in permanent settlements. If we go back to killing our own food again it'd all come collapsing down. I don't want to be a nomad, thank you.

Also if we have to kill our own food, that would require 1 cow per person per steak. It would be a waste of meat (and cows) if everyone has to kill for food. And I just refuse to eat dogs because it would be less wastefull.

If you feel so frustrated about it, how about you get to kill animals WE get to eat. Then at least you can feel satisfied that someone appreciated the requirements of food.

The only way that would be feasable is when we started eating insects for meat. And most of us in the western world feel sort-of evasive to that prospect.

Hate to say it but you do make a decent point. Unless I went on some kind of hunting trip or something I'd never be forced to kill my food, but I think that if someone told me that I had to slaughter a few chickens if I wanted to keep eating them for the rest of my life then I'd accept.

Hand me the animal and hand me the knife. No problem really.

I do agree that there should be animal rights so that the animals who are turned into meat are treated decently. I don't think "not being eaten" should be among them.

I've killed my own food plenty of times. I also buy from the butcher and supermarket.

I have no moral quandaries about this. We have simply made the process of gathering food more efficient. Life in a cage is no more painful than getting ravaged by a pack of wolves when a week old.

I'd kill a chicken. They are easily the stupidest animal that I have ever seen. They don't know the world they're living in, give me a knife and I'd do it no problem.

I own chickens. I love my chickens, some of them have names (we dont eat the family favs). However, we do eat them. Its not processed meat, its natural. In fact, if you eat meat this way it helps your immune system as opposed to buying red meat at the store.

It's hard to kill an animal, but I'm not so liberal as to be a vegetarean. However I find it interesting you point out mcDonalds... I try to sway all my friends from eating there. They dont buy American products, their beef is barely technically meat, and they are funding rainforest clearing and therefore the debeautification of Earth. I'm with you on the no McDonalds.
If you believe the fluff, their beef is actually Australian beef.

So, eat McDonalds folks - our economy needs it.

If meat eaters need to kill an animal at least once, then vegans/vegetarians should farm and harvest a crop at least once. :p

In all fairness, I'd have no moral qualms about killing an animal for food should it come about. If it'd make you feel better about me eating ham sandwiches most days, get me a pig and a knife and I'll do the rest.

(Hell, I've seen a lot worse done to pig carcasses in deadliest warrior. I love that show. :D)

vegetarians should have to grow their own produce....Oh wait that doesn't make sense, people need to farm for other people so that we can work as a community and have all necessary features of one.

I know full well the implications of what I eat.
I also know full well I do nothing but reduce my enjoyment of life by ceasing to buy from those sources. Vegetarian/vegan is a lifestyle choice, something that effects a large part of what you do, and even gets in the way of everyday life. Living becomes much harder and you have to go out of your way to make sure you're getting your iron and protein, among other things. But to do this without being hypocritical, you must know where ALL your food and everything you "consume" (as a consumer, all the things you buy, not just what you ingest) comes from and you must know it was all prepared and crafted humanely, without harm to humans or animals. In the modern world, that requires a lot of research before buying anything, and further hampers enjoyment of day to day life. The fruits of your labor, so to speak, would be those inhumane practices ceasing to be, but we all know far too many people will always continue to consume blindly and thus it will never happen.

Honestly, I'm an animal lover. A furry. Someone who believes not only that animals are our equals, but greater than humans. (before I get flamed, tell me what other animal has to level entire forests, destroy ecosystems and completely alter the landscape, blocking out "nature" just to SURVIVE? I see us as a plague on the world, not "better" just because we have managed some impressive feats of technology and science (which may I add, is all in the name of self-righteous continuation of our own endeavors, not to benefit anything but humanity)) There's not much I can do about it, really. I could go out and take my place in nature but then where would I be? In the belly of something a hell of a lot tougher than me, that's where. I can only live this life that's been fabricated for me and continue to do my best to enjoy life and spread the enjoyment to others. There's some hypocritical stuff there, but I know full well what I'm doing.

I am humble about many things. In terms of evolution, my species is pretty weak. In terms of physical capability, I'm nowhere near alpha-male. The fact that I'm alive is thanks to our separation from nature, and I can only appreciate that that's what makes living this life I have possible. I eat other creatures that could probably kill me if they tried (try punching a cow to death. See how far you get.) but I understand that and I do so with respectfulness.

Rather roundabout way of explaining why I eat the meat of living things that I consider greater than my own kind, but hey. There it is. Feel free to poke holes in it and/or flame me unnecessarily for being a furry. Either one works.

Many of times I have hunted and killed something and then ate it. Each time I was happy about getting the kill but always felt sorry for the animal. That being said I would gladly do it again. My family has never been trophy hunters, have no problem shooting a cow/doe if it is legal. Does that give me a pass to drop into BK or MickeyDs if I am hungry?

I totally agree.

I have killed for food, and would do again in a heartbeat, nothing like it.

I believe firmly that we should respect the animals we kill, that means using every part of the animal, not wasting to much meat, and being willing to come face to face with the act of killing them.

Just a warning this is going to be coming from a man who has eaten cow brains.
If that statement bothers you...you may not like the rest of this.
On the one hand, your argument will vastly lower the human population (which, much like the rent, is too damn high), but the rest is just the usual vegetarian whining. Well constructed whining, I hasten to add, but whining nonetheless.
Put yourself in a meat eaters shoes. We like eating meat. We enjoy the taste, the texture, the smell, and the vast majority KNOW it comes from dead animals. So being CONSTANTLY told by vegetarian friends (and indeed this one vegan girl I dated)that you should feel GUILTY for enjoying your food...isn't fair.
Besides, meat is more expensive so you better be eating a LOT of vegetables to hold up your end of the economy there.Plus you know what eat vegetables? Most animals. You are competing with them, killing them slowly rather than killing them the standard way.
Now I will give you the quickest and most begrudging brownie point here. There is one thing I agree with vegetarians on and thats the way animals are kill 'humanely' is usually still zapping them senseless and then slitting their throats.
Now I'm an AVID meat lover (I'm half German) but that doesn't sit well with me...
My last point. Try Pidgeon. Seriously. If you try pigeon and are still vegetarian. I will step out and let you live your life.

I don't wanna!

I'd much rather flame you for the sentence above or for that dinky little "animals are better than us" speech...

when it comes to factory farms, the only thing i wont eat from them is pork, cause pigs are smart and self aware and literally lose there minds and have bin known to kill them selfs and there young willingly in those conditions(saw it in video, the pig stomped its young and snapped it neck between the bars), i feel a little bad about chickins cause there are physically abused way worse than the other animals.

end of the day i love meat and shall eat meat. and i have killed before and ate when i have slayed, and i would do so again. but i don't see that being a requirement in this modern age.

Well, I'm fine with people eating farm animals, because if we didn't eat the farm animals we'd just have to kill them off (because they wouldn't be profitable, and they can't live in the wild). I say we should strive to make animal's lives in farms as nice as possible, because if the life is nice, why would they care if they're eaten at the end? (And to show I'm not a hypocrite, I do plan to get an organ donor card (not old enough right now)).

I do oppose hunting though, because (at least in Britain) getting bullets, a gun, a license ect. is more expensive than actually buying meat, so therefore the hunter's only real reason for hunting is fun. Plus, deer, pheasants ect. are wild animals, and don't need to live with human care to survive, unlike farm animals.

One thing that I think is ignored/forgotten about is fishing. Not sure what I think about that, I oppose recreational fishing, and I'm on the wall about commercial fishing (for the same "fish are wild, not tame" argument above.)

So no, I don't think meat eaters should have to kill an animal to eat meat. Besides, shouldn't we leave the killing to professionals, so that it's as painless as possible?

Interesting points. People should definitely learn about how their food is produced I think, particularly in the US. I suggest the documentary Food Inc, a lot of it is dedicated the the factory farming of meat. It isn't pretty, nor are the measures required to ensure people don't get sick from the broken methods. I'm not talking about the killing itself. We're all smart people, we realise that for there to be meat something had to die to provide it, I'm talking conditions livestock are kept in, the state of abattoirs, that sort of thing. I'm always incredibly thankfull that the sort of things that happen in the US doesn't happen where I am in New Zealand, (and when they tried to bring the same practises into NZ there was public outrage that stopped it in its tracks.)

I don't think people need to go out and kill an animal just because they eat meat. I've killed plenty of animals, it has made no difference to my outlook of eating meat. So yeah, while I would also encourage people to find out where their food is coming from - and demand better practises if neccesary - I see no need to return the the hunter/gatherer sort of mentality.

what's it with vegans and their aggressive pseudo-religious attempts to convert people to their way of living?
