OP, I can tell you're a young 'un still fairly early on in discovering this genre. Half those bands aren't strictly speaking metal and the others are distinctly mainstream ones.

This is my collection thus far:

Not a fan of metal, in general. Not one bit.

That said, I suppose listing these would be frowned upon?

I don't know. They might not be considered "proper" metal, so I'm honestly not sure.

I agree with you.
And I also agree with most of your collection.
I take it you are Swedish. Might even be from Stockholm.
Hell, with that collection. I probably know you.

I still don't have Still Life, I need to get it, but I can't find it anywhere :/ I'd say Blackwater Park and Deliverance are among best, but I've found myself shifting through them, one moment I love one album, then I love another, and another etc. They are all good
The title track off Deliverance.... holy shit what a masterpiece. That final 4 minutes of instrumental dynamic building and dropping... it makes my ears happy.

I gather you are Australian but I could swear that I knew you looking at that collection.
Aside from Arch Enemy and perhaps Amon Amarth, I could've sworn you were from Stockholm.

But on to the point. I agree with your post.

I'm more of a metalcore-head than a metal head
Some of my favourite bands: Parkway Drive, Killswitch Engage, August Burns Red, Cancer Bats, Architects, Bring Me The Horizon, Converge, Periphery, Suicide Silence. Yeah most of those are metalcore/hardcore but they all fall into the metal genre in one way or another
Other metal bands I love: Trivium, Swashbuckle (pirate metal FTW), In Flames, Anthrax, Avenged Sevenfold (pop-metal, I know, but still a great band) and many more...

Here's a list of the bands I can name off of the top of my head:

Dream Theater, Symphony X, Tool, Disturbed, System of a Down, Avenged Sevengfold, Trivium, Edguy, Sonata Arctica, Angra, Avantasia, Metallica, Megadeth, and Steel Attack.

Hope that is some help. I mostly listen to Prog, Nu Metal, and Power Metal so if these are recommendations for anyone who also likes those.

Well, it's hardly a complete playlist, for a number of reasons, but for all intensive purposes: this [http://open.spotify.com/user/kesteruk/playlist/4tKspHInK2hK6XuXP1gkIf].

Thanks for quoting me twice. :p Yes, I'm Australian. So Australian in fact that I've seen Destroyer 666 live in the back room of a pub with a few dozen people. It doesn't get more metal than that.

And as you can tell, I am a devotee of the Stockholm scene. I even wrote a blog about it: http://www.vooks.net/forums/index.php?/blog/33/entry-301-stockholm-syndrome/ . My quest to own all the major releases from that scene has advanced nicely since I finally won a copy of Unleashed's Immortal Glory box set after two years of searching.

Well, I have music phases that alternate, but lately I've been in the progressive metal mood with Opeth, Gojira, and Meshuggah.

My top 5 favorite bands are: Otep, Gojira, Murderdolls, Children of Bodom, and Black Veil Brides.

EDIT: before anyone quotes me saying that I suck for listening to a "screamo band" (BVB) just know that I normally don't like that kind of music but theres something about BVB that I can't stop listening to.

im only into real metal. i listen to lots of other types of music but when it comes to metal it must be the real thing
no emo music-bullet-bring me the hairstraightener
no surfie music-parkway drive
no music that some missinformed people think is metal but realy isnt-nightwish(not saying theyre crap there just not metal or symph metal)
no spirit finger music-dragonforce
System of a Down counts as "real" metal, but Nightwish doesn't count as (power) metal? Come on, SoaD's a nu/alt metal band; if you consider a nu metal band to be "real," then Nightwish is as well.

I listen to pretty much one band from any subgenre I could find, from metalcore to Black & Death Metal. I consider bands such as Bring me the Horizon to have zero musical credibility and should never be included on lists from anyone saying they are a metalhead, though I do listen to Metalcore and Deathcore myself, I try to avoid the most mainstream of deathcore bands. Last FM on my profile for those wanting a list

I enjoy all types of metal. Thrash, power, glam, melodic death, black, symphonic, progressive, death, the list goes on. I also think trance-metal is going to become a big genre in the near future as well.

A few of my favorites

And while not metal, I take every chance given to promote Pink Floyd.

And this is the abridged version, I could just keep on going and going. And one day I might do just that.
