So, after a long day of school, I decided that I would try out Minecraft's 1.8 update. After hearing of the many features that were included I was filled with excitement, worry, and confusion. However, I wasn't going to judge it until I tried it out for myself. So here's the features that I ran into:

-Improved Biomes:
Biomes are much larger and much more distinct from what I've seen. Desserts aren't just a 16x16 grid of sand with a few cacti thrown in, which was one of my biggest complaints about the biomes. However, they do have a tendency to screw you over when you're trying to find some coal or a mountain to dig through. Also, I found myself spawning on an island in the middle of the ocean. There was no trees or land in sight. Still, biomes have improved.

-Mobs:
Now, I haven't encountered any of the new enemy mobs like the endermen or silverfish, but I have seen how some of the peaceful mobs react. I will admit, they do get kind of annoying when the run away as soon as you hit them, especially when you're early on in the game and you don't have a weapon. Realistic? Sure, but realism doesn't equal fun!

-Ravines:
After randomly stumbling into ravine [small](and thankfully landing into water)[/small], I was already amazed at what I saw. One problem: How do I get out? :p

-Hunger:
This is what I was both confused and worried about. I was concerned that hunger would be a large unnecessary struggle in the game, messing up with the flow, and feeling totally out of place. While I was glad that it wasn't a struggle that was difficult to work around, I still found it a bit unnecessary, mainly because it adds an element in a game that doesn't require it and is just plain useless.

-NPC Villages:
This one I actually found kind of creepy. Once I stumbled into a village I was introduced to... well, nothing. There were no NPCs in this NPC village! Plus, when I got into one of the houses they were empty. There was barely any furniture about. I was hoping this would be a chance to make some furniture in my house so that it doesn't feel like a giant storage facility of chests.

-Pig Snouts:
There's nothing too special about this one. I just like typing the word pig snouts. Pig snouts! Fun! :D

-Lighting:
I absolutely adore the new lighting. The warm glow of torches make the indoors of my home a comforting place while also making it dim and dark when I place them in caves. In caves, before the update, they just seemed like the were lit with office lights.

That's kind of all of my experiences and thoughts for now. I haven't seen everything, but so far I like what I see, and I just might add in some of my experiences and observations the more I play it.

But for now, what are your thoughts? Do like it or do you not? What do you thing would improve it?

Gotta say, I'm enjoying it quite a bit, although the hunger-meter is starting to dampen my enjoyment.

I'll tell you now, the Endermen are shit-yourself creepy. They're scary even when you know they can't get you. Just to see them stare directly at you from any distance when you hover the crosshair over them, and for them to rapidly teleport in your direction with the intent on doing nasty things to you is terrifying to behold.

Well, it's great. I haven't been able to play for more than 5 minutes at a time without it 'running out of memory'.

Hopefully that's fixed soon. :\

The only thing i can say is I walked for a while over what I thought was solid ground. Then I saw a hole and lookeed down, giant fucking cave. If I started digging anywhere for like twenty blocks away from the hole, I'd have fallen and probably died. scared the hell out of me.

Also, I found this vent in the water where I swam down it (cause it was lit up, so I thought lava) and all I saw was obsidian. really made me mad that there was that much there (had to be an area of 40 blocks there.

But I like it so far. though the hunger thing is starting to annoy me, and that I can hold down my mouse to swing and have to keep clicking to swing at an animal.

Today, I was so impressed with a pitch black underground ravine, I fell off a ledge into lava.
Also, I find Endermen unnerving to be around. Perhaps is because of the dream I once had were I was being stalked by an unknown black figure.

I am, however, sincerely loving it. Although, I think my character may be eating too much steak. :>

I love it, with the exception of the hunger meter. I have a serious amount of hate for the hunger meter. Enough hate that if I hadn't already bought the game, I probably wouldn't just because of that stupid thing. Realism rarely, if ever, = fun.
On a side note, I really love the new lighting. Sprint is awesome too, esp. when trying to run from creepers and such.

It's good, I really like what they've done with the game so far. Endermen aren't nearly as scary as I thought they would be though. Also, is it just me, or do they go way overboard on the coal? It might just be that I got really lucky, but the first world I created in 1.8 I found over 100 coal just in the first area I spawned in before the first night even came.

I'm really enjoying it so far. I might even start playing the game on a regular basis now.

Don't get me wrong, the game wasn't bad prior to this, but it never seemed to hold my attention for long. However, this latest batch of changes really seems to add new life to the game for me. I'm happy that there's more RPG elements and an emphasis on exploration now. I was worried at first that the hunger meter would make the game too difficult, but it depletes slowly enough that it's not only manageable, but also adds extra depth to the experience. Still, it would be a good idea to disable it in the options if people don't want to deal with it.

Also, endermen are more vaguely creepy than shit-your-pants terrifying, which is a good thing in my book.

I heard that NPCs are probably going to be added in the next patch.

I generated several new worlds to explore in and I have not once found a snow biome or a mushroom biome. Anyone else having this trouble?

The rest of it is pretty good though (although laggy as all hell at world generation).

It won't update for me! It keeps saying "Login Failed" whenever I try to start it up.

I want me some 1.8 so bad, I am bursting at the seams. Does anyone else have this problem? (or possibly a solution?)

It's fantastic. The main thing I like is that the terrain seems a lot more realistic, and it's reinvigorated the sense of wonder and beauty I haven't felt since I first started playing. The larger biomes mean it just looks a lot better, and rivers are a surprisingly awesome touch. Right now I have a cave home in a large, open, hilly plain with a river running through it, one ravine on each side, and a random house on the opposite side of the river to my cave home. I started renovating it to live in it, but I think I like living in a cave better; easier to keep creepers from surprising you on your way out.

The little upgrades are awesome too, like the lighting, the vines on trees in swamp biomes, the different meat from every animal... awesome.

I think your minecraft.exe is old. When you start up is there a screen showing patch notes? If not then you may need to re-install minecraft from the website.

Hope this works for ya!

I hear Notch is going to add snowy biomes back in either the near future or the next update. The same goes for mushroom biomes.

I was expecting that, though I hardly see the point of putting them in before they actually make the NPCs.

... Who else hopes that they're just going to be normal pigmen?

They're all nice additions but they hardly breathe new life into the game.

What we need are some end goals, especially in single player.

I have been having a ball with it so far although I still haven't found a ravine. Which is what I am really trying to find at the moment. But what is the deal with leaving land once you do you only come across small islands and that is it.

I really like the touch they added that deep underground at the bedrock level, the area fades into darkness much quicker, and the air is filled with smoky dust particles. It really feels like you're at the bottom of the world.
