I find it interesting that many people on here are calling her some closed-minded twat. She never bashed gays in what she said, she just answered the question in a polite manner. I didn't know that if you don't accept an idea because its against yours, but don't actively fight against it, you are a closed-minded bigot. Interesting fact, I'll hold onto that. *sarcasm*

no it's not, as was said MANY cultures long before christianity came along practiced marriage, it was invented long before that

and as for saying things about gays, the christian church really shouldn't comment

as for the topic on hand, yeah she's stupid for answering it wrong, part of the contest is to see how much you give the correct answer, if she had cut out her personal views, ie between a man and a woman, the answer and reaction to her would have been a lot better
I'm unaware as to how you answer in a Beauty Pageant. I know its about winning it, but I didn't know her answer was "wrong". I thought it was actually about saying your personal views, instead of being a hypocrite, unless of course, she was applying for a position in our Senate/House. *bah dun tshhh*

I do have to give her kudos for saying "I believe" and "I think" and not "it should be because it just should be and is empirically right". She was asked a question and gave her personal opinion, but I do think she should have known that it would cause a lot of controversy and declined to answer. Not that I support her viewpoint, though, but to quote Voltaire: "I may disagree with what you say,But I will fight to the death for your right to say it".

If she wants to spout her opinion and make a muck of things, be my guest. She has a right to her own beliefs, however much I disagree with them. I'll get up in arms when she starts telling people that marriage should only be between a man and a woman and not that she believes it as such. Difference in asserting opinion versus asserting opinion as fact without calling it opinion.

It's true. I'll support universal marriage rights to the death, but she was asked a question and answered it. It's her opinion, even if we disagree with it here. Perez is in the wrong.

There's nothing wrong with her believing that and she said it very maturely and intelligently, but being raised to believe something is no excuse for continuing to believe in it. Just because you were told it's right doesn't make it right, you need to think for yourself.

Fucking great point. And furthermore, what the fuck is a gay man doing judging a WOMAN'S beauty pagent. WHAT!?!?!?! I AM FINE WITH GAY MARRIAGE (flaming avioded), but I wouldn't have a lesbian judge a men's modeling competition. Women can judge a miss america pagent because they can say what makes the women pretty because THEY WOULD KNOW. So would men, but he shouldn't be judging the miss america pagent in the first place, and honestly, he missed the point of the questioning. It is to make sure that the contestants have views, and can back up their political views and aren't just really hot empty headed women(although I really don't care either way).

Ok to this I just have to say gays want their values respected because people are not respecting their values. duh And a gay man can judge a womens beauty contest because (no stereotype intended) they love fashion and plus you're making it seem like they just judge the women by looks that would be retarded. If it were like that we would have nothing but bimbos standing on the stage being judged.....oh wait.....

EDIT: another thing a womens beauty pagent isn't about how hot they are it's about more inner beauty but then again the system of judging is rigged so the hottest wins so I don't even know why I'm wasting my breath

Her right to her own beliefs does not give her the right to the crown of a beauty pageant set up by people who don't want people with her beliefs representing their organization.

The people who set up the Miss USA tournament obviously feel that her answer to that question is of value in determining who would make the best Miss USA. What about their right to their beliefs about who would make the best Miss USA?
Um...I think I get what you mean.

Well, if that's one of their explicit criteria in determining it and has been historically, then why not? If it's not been, then no, their beliefs shouldn't influence what's supposed to be as objective of a competition as possible.

If the pageant is meant to put figures in the public eye who share the same agenda as the sponsors/organizers, then I take issue with that construct in itself, nevermind this specific year.

The first point I have no reply to at this time.

The second I do. The Bible says homosexuality is a sin. One of the main duties of Christians is to turn away from sin, and to spread God's word. That's what the Bible says.

The third thing I also have some comments on as well. So, win at any cost..."What profits a man if he gains the world and loses his soul?"

I am beginning to think the U.S.A is abandoning its principles. Free speech/differing opinions is frowned upon, as well as religion, responsibility, individuality, etc. Some people want the government to take care of them! That's the opposite of what the founding fathers wanted.

I think that Perez Hilton is a jerk for asking her opinion, it was obvious what he wanted to hear. She just had enough balls to stand up for what she believes.

I think a good question is, if she was gay and supported gay marriage, and the judge was against it and gave her a zero, would we still side with the judge and say, "Sorry, but you have to give the answer that will get you the highest score"? If not, then your "logic" is incorrect.
Sure we would side with the judge.

And we'd be criticizing the competition for picking that judge instead.

Well, now you know. What you described (if one idea is close-minded and the other is tolerant) is a quiet bigot. What she is, is a vocal bigot. That's the difference.

I'm pretty sure she was applying for the position of being Miss USA.

I think the Virgin Mary and St. Joseph might disagree with you about that.
Why must she be considered a bigot though? Am I a bigot for letting people have gay unions even though I don't particularly agree with it? Its not what I would do, but I'm not going to shove my beliefs down their throats, unlike many of them (as seen by this) do to straight men and women. I don't understand your reasoning on this one...

I don't think she meant any offense. Sure things get pretty knee jerk these days, but she was just stating her opinion, as everyone is entitled to. Me, personally, I am a pro gay marriage supporter, but I applaud her for letting her voice be heard, and even though I don't agree with it, I think its important that we all get a chance to say what we think, whatever our angle.

i was reading an opinion article about this the other day that called Perez Hilton "died-his-hair-blue gay"

anyway, i fing it funny that the democrats and left wing are attacking her for her views yet Obama was asked the same general question and gave exactly the same answer

shes being attacked for giving an opinion by those who supposedly fight for everyone to have their own views, uhhhhhh... what?

wouldnt this be reverse political correctness anyway

Please. Miss USA has never been a figure of any importance. Anyone who looks up to a Miss America winner is an idiot. All it is is a contest of who can wear makeup, stick their fingers down their throat, and bullshit the most.
Thank you! Their job is to shut up and look pretty. This is not an event in which serious intellectual discourse takes place. This is a contest to see who's ass looks the best in evening wear, swim suits, and who can juggle, sing, or do rhythmic gymnastics the best. Have we totally lost our ability to recognize who's opinion we should give a damn about? I think my rule of "never trust someone with petroleum jelly on their teeth" applies here, as it does in so most other situations.

That same book also says that you shouldn't eat shellfish and wear mixed fibers.
And by your logic I wouldn't be able to get married since I am not Christian (I am Buddhist, since the ten commandments say that "thou shalt not have any other god before me".
Dude. I'm not Christain, at all. I was just pointing out the obvious. Maybe I'll get married one day, I'm just saying that Miss California wasn't in the wrong saying what she said.

actually Jesus embraced homosexuals and there is nothing in the bible against it, what it DOES say in the bible is it's against the butt sex. it's not really about being a sin, it's more because of the health risks if you live in a desert. if you've even been to the desert or a beach for that matter you know that sand gets EVERYWHERE. now couple that with anal sex, which causes small tears in the rectum and well the sand will get in there and it will become infected and you die. so you can now have the phrase, rectum, damn it kill him

but the thing is the butt sex they are against is ALL forms, not just the male-male kind but also the female-male type

being a beauty pagent contestant is like a politician, you have to give the correct answer. knowing who Perez is, he probly asked her that on purpose knowing what her response would be. the fact is she's given several speeches and appearances at severely anti-gay marriage and anti-gay groups. so i'm pretty sure it was a loaded question and he knew it would probly cost her the contest

she should have given the politically correct answer and left her personal opinions out of it
