...He never said it was too challenging. Alls he said was that it was getting too complicated. Making things more accessible doesn't always mean "dumbing" it down.

Maybe he means in terms of making it more streamlined to control?

'Easier to play' and 'easier to complete' aren't necessarily the same, maybe he just wasn't 100% happy with the previous wii controls.

Frankly if a Zelda game gets easier you may as well take out the enemies and make it in to a puzzle game. What'd be the point of fighting?
I am on this boat.

I remember when Metroid Prime 3 was delayed by a few months to 'make it easier'. They meant the controls. The original control scheme for the game supposedly sucked and they went far out of their way to improve that before releasing the game. Now it has some of the best control schemes out there.

Now I am not saying that this is exactly what Miyamoto means. However some stuff he says can be taken out of context or badly translated and twisted into meaning just about anything.

Seriously Nintendo: Invest in a Difficult setting.

I have my fingers crossed for some real optional challenges in the Overworld and ideally a hard mode ala the second quest in Zelda 1. More difficult enemies and revised dungeon contents and flow. Paired with an easier and more straightforward default mode. This concept has already been proven to translate into 3d via the Ocarina of Time: Master Quest.

For those that never tasted Master Quest's glory, it was available on that limited edition Gamecube promo disc (Europe only perhaps?) alongside Majora's and the like (ebay time!) and was deviously great apart from the Water Temple which on account of having already reached critical difficulty actually became easier! For bonus cred, memorise the desert and then try finishing it without getting the Lens of Truth at all. "Feeling" things out with the hookshot laser pointer turns the spooky dungeon parts into some sort of supernatural thriller.

I beat OoT when I was fucking 4! Hell, my dad beat it and he hates video games. Kids today are pussies and won't even touch a game older than 2008. Fuck the new millennium generation

What?
Zelda games have never, IMO, been particularly difficult. Sure, some challenges were challenging, but they were meant to be.

What the hell?
This^. I am generally against the "I WANT MORE CHALLENGE" old school types- I think games in the 80's were more a form of masochistic self-deprecation than fun. And yes, my first system was an NES, and I played Super Mario bros. 1&3 and some Mega Man's. I think many gamers are so obessessed with a particular type of challenge from their childhoods that they demand that particular type even when it destroys the core appeal of the game- such as making a horror game less immersive, and therefore less scary. The dissapearing guns of enemies in Call of Cthulu: Dark Corners of the earth is a good example. It made the game more challenging sure, but it also made it less immersive, and distinctly reminded me that I am playing a game. By destroying the immersion, it destroyed the horror. Many RPG's have done the same. Amazingly some people want Fallout to do the same.

However, in this case, I am inclined to agree. Zelda was never really ahrd in the first place.

NOOOOOOOOOO!
Goddamn it, Nintendo! This is the last fucking straw! I've been playing your Zelda games since I was able to hold onto a controller, and they've always been very fun, but on the easy side. Since then, I've seen you dumb down your consoles and games for the unwashed masses, and left the rest of us in the dirt. The one thing, the ONE THING I had left was the promise of a real, hardcore Zelda game, and now you take THAT away from us too? Fuck that!
We're through, Nintendo! I want all of your shit out of my house by Saturday! And you can take all of your fucking posters back, too!

He didn't say in any of those quotes that he was lowering the difficulty, he said he was making it easier to play.

We'll have to see what exactly they have in mind first, it could be a good or bad thing.

This isn't that hard...
Seriously, they never were that hard. I'll be able to sleep through this one.

What we need is an entire game of Water Temples.

Put some God damn hair on your chest, that would.
It would also make these so called "hardcore gamers" these days cry. Which, admittedly, would be fun to watch.
That would be fun to watch. And fun (but repetitive) to play.

I would like to point out that the man (Miyamoto) was quoted saying that their making the game "easier to play" which is not the same thing as making the game itself easier. He's probably referring to simplifying the controls or something. The game itself may still prove to be quite the challenge, we'll just have to see.

Maybe he just meant less complicated and counter intuitive? You remember in WW when you had to take all those things round the merchant dudes? That was just a guessing game if you didn't use the walkthrough. A lot of the beauty of Zelda is when you totally know what your supposed to do but it takes a minute to figure out the details not when your left going "uh what?". I'll be pleased if it goes back to the sort of facepalming backtracking I know and love. Also a difficulty setting would be a great idea rather than dumbing down the whole game. Though as its mostly puzzles just making the enemies a bit more difficult would hardly be satisfying....

I know he can make three games! "Legend of Zelda: Hardcore" "LOZ: I want a challenge but not too much of one" and "LOZ: Lite"

...>Are you serious? The series already took one serious nosedive after it got off of the N64 and now they're looking to chop it up even further? *shakes head* Sad day.

... What.

I loved playing Zelda Games (Wind Waker owns my soul) and I just adored Twilight Princess. Sure, parts were difficult and it took a while to figure it out - but that's the whole bloody point. It's a puzzle you're supposed to figure out - a challenge to overcome. I can't believe they'd dumb it down when if you're really stuck and you really, really want to move on - just use a walkthrough. It's not that hard.

Though reading a bit more, I do hope they're talking about the game play mechanics, not the actually difficulty. Though even if that's the case - I don't understand what's so hard with equipping items to a certain button then clicking that button for the item. Yeah, it took a bit to get used to with the Wii, but hell, I'm sure everyone got it.

I'm sure he meant just in terms of control scheme being easier.
I mean I hope to God in heaven it's just controls.
The recent Zeldas have been cakewalks, they really don't need to be any easier.
Majora's mask wasn't even that hard ferchrissakes!

Only the water temples, some races, and getting the things for the real Big Goron's sword were hard. Maybe it will become press X to not die...and it never goes away till you press it. Bleh. That is literally a shot against hardcore gamers. Know your roots Nintendo.
Their roots being children, you mean?

I take your twilight princess temple and raise you a great bay temple.
Usual water temple mind fuckery + Specific water flow routes spanning the entire temple + unexplained, unprecedented yet vital water freezing mechanic = Head asplode.

I raise you one Wind temple. (Wind Waker) You have to protect your partner and yourself, mind instakill traps, wind mechanics and unexplained gadget usage. (God I hated that level when I was a kid)

Whoa someone hasn't taken their Valium today.

Damn it people, we're not even entirally sure what he meant by that, so can we wait until we have more information before we pass judgment. For all we know, Miyamoto may have simply meant that they are trying to achieve the much coveted status of 'easy to learn, difficult to master'
