My biggest issues is the maps... I hate looking at buildings and wondering 'why the hell can't we open that damn door!' When I can either remake the map out of lego or draw a detailed map of the area with a few strokes on a piece of paper there is a big problem....

Think of it this way: Would a camping sniper really be much of a problem if he had more then two or three avenues of approach?

On many maps the sniper doesn't even have to move, he just has to swivel his head and he can see down the other approach or have it covered with a clay, or if you are me... two claymores. All it takes is two half decent snipers in the same position and they can become so well bunkered that your better off ignoring that whole quadrant of the map entirely.

I can't help but feel if those buildings where all open ended that sniping would become a hell of a lot harder. Sure you could be shooting from any one of a dozen windows but at the same time the enemy could be counter sniping from any one of a dozen windows in the building across the way. And that is just with a few small houses opened up. If you opened some of the apartment like buildings found in many maps?

Well the sniper in question won't be able to camp, he would get his arse handed to him because he has to find a way to cover maybe close to fifty windows facing his position. The best he can hope for is to shoot one or two people then relocate to another floor or building all together. Staying in the same window is just screaming 'here I am, come shoot me.'

Right now... it is screaming the same thing, but the only way to get to a half decent sniper is down his scope.

Very good post. I hear my roommates yelling about this game all the time, but then keep playing despite how the game "is such BS" (words I hear frequently from them). They even believe there is code in there that gives the top player a greater advantage (like kills they probably shouldn't have gotten, if a situation would be a tie that person will get it, etc.) rather than just realizing it's all connection/host based...

Actually I have wondered about the coding myself, usually after seeing more then half a dozen of my spot on shots miss a person who is standing still. Better yet the numerous wild shot that clearly miss but get counted as hits. Not to mention the numerous cases where shooting a foot counts as a Head shot.

Lag can be counted a bit, for example when you shoot at someone ducking behind cover but the server doesn't recognise the hit even though, on your side, there was a clear view. It doesn't account for the cases where the person manages to get around the corner on your side but you still squeeze off a few rounds... only to see blood in the middle of the open air and get a kill.

Yes, I will shoot even when I know it won't hit, it is called suppression.

Had that happen, shots I clearly know shouldn't count some how managing to get me free kills. Makes me wonder just how poorly coded the game is, as opposed to thinking there is some in-built 'unfairness' code. The game wasn't designed for PC, that much is clear, and should be held up as an example of why you don't just do a 'direct path' to another system....

Play on the PC version, and you can add the aimbotters/wallhackers to that list.

Seriously, I joined three separate games in a row today, and each one of them had someone who could headshot you across the map through a wall in the blink of an eye.

Where did my hip fire go? That was a viable option in CoD4. Did it not occur that pointing an automatic shotgun at someone 2 meters away and pumping 5 rounds into them will, infact, kill them? And the lag! Ugh.

An old saying comes to mind. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Are you seriously trying to imply because you're a lifeguard you are more likely to get laid than nerds?

I've been a lifeguard for about 5 years and I've met more gumpy lifeguards than I have nerds, it takes fuck all to become a lifeguard, it's an awesome job (read: lazy as hell) compared to retail that other young people go for over the summer, but seriously... you don't have to be fit to be a lifeguard.

I too believe a lot of it is fairly poorly implemented when it comes to the online stuff. I have seen where the hit box(es) seem to lag behind the players graphic instead of moving together. But as you said, it's not built-in unfairness code. Roommates seem to believe otherwise... Yet even with that belief they still play it...

Meet Pro-5nipez665

'Hi!'

He's a fictional gamer whose face is a random Google image. He's a pretty mellow guy. Never been in a fight, bit of a nerd, kind to his friends and never loses his temper.

He has an awesomely L33T gamertag. Pro-5nipez666 was already taken.

He's been a gamer all his life and always enjoyed it and had fun with it. He's gotten frustrated by multiplayer games sometimes but never angry, and has always had the good sense to switch off and do something else when he gets mad.

But then he got Modern Warfare 2.

Cue ominous storm clouds...

Suddenly he was spending hours in front of his HDTV raging and screaming at it, going red faced and stiff necked form tension and anger. No matter how bad it got, he still felt compelled to go back for more punishment.

But why does Modern Warfare 2 make Pro-5nipez665 and millions of other gamers rage so hard, as opposed to other games?

I decided to look into it, and came up with a few major factors:

1. MW2 encourages lone wolf style play, yet punishes players for their team-mates' mistakes.

Pro-5nipez665 joins a game of Team Deathmatch. He is doing really well, gets 5 kills with his M4 and one with his Predator missile.

Unfortunately, xxxI-PWN-U_69xxx is on his team, and is not a very good player. He dies seven times revenge rushing a camping sniper and earns said sniper a Harrier Strike. It is randomly dropped and the splash damage kills our hero. He gets a bit narked.

Wheeeeee! Awesome! OMG OMG now I'm gonna get so many kills! I own at this game! SKILL!'

2. The map design and mechanics encourage camping and K:D whoring

Next our friend joins a game of Domination on Skid Row. As he runs around trying to take objectives, a guy on the other team named U-sux-my-8ull3tz has been camping in the high building over A with one man army and danger close.

Soon he has an AC130, and again Pro-Snipez is killed by splash damage. He switches to his cold blooded/stinger class, and spawns out in the open next to his team-mates into another hail of explosive fire and dies again.

This continues and he starts to get mad.

They hold the flags really well, dominating the game.

But the camper drops a nuke and the other team get the win.

'Boom! Yeah! This should get me a kill!

3. Host advantage/lag is a bigger issue than in other games.

He joins a new game, this time on Favela. Good map for rushing, he thinks to himself as he gets out his UMP.

As he comes round a corner he sees a guy facing the opposite direction and opens fire. Almost a full clip of ammo shoots straight into the enemy, who soaks it all up, calmly turns around, aims about 5 feet to his left and blasts him dead with his Akimbo 1887s.

On the killcam our hero watches himself NOT FIRE ONE SHOT.

'FUCK!' he yells. 'That was fucking bullshit! What the fuck!'

'Why is everyone so mad at me? What did I do wrong?'

4. Too many perks and weapons means things are not balanced

Next he sees a guy sprinting towards him from halfway down the hill...

'Aha!' he thinks. 'Big mistake' and opens fire - but other guy teleports 8 metres in the blink of an eye and knifes our poor hero in the face.

'FUCKING COMMANDO PRICKS! FUCK YOU YOU FUCKING ****!' he yells, and kicks the wall.

As the day continues, Pro-Snipez gets angrier and angrier, until finally he throws his controller into the wall and screams all kind of racial and homophobic slurs into his mic before rage quitting.

You know this has been you if you've ever played this game

The next day he wakes up, has his breakfast and boots up Modern Warfare 2.

The end.

OT: yeah the multiplayer sucks in some cases, but those sorts of situations are due more to the players playing than anything the game could come up with.

team deathmatch situation:The more players playing, the bigger the difference between their skills. And since MW2 sold so many copies, there is a huge difference, which the game could never cover for.

lag situation: if someone is playing an online game with a bad connection then they shouldn't complain when it rapes them in the posterior. online can only go so far to cover for it, and the leader system at least allows most of the players are more clean connection

commando situation: again, it's more the players than the game (tough in this case the game could does have a share of the blame) if the enemy is using commando, then don't go where the perk will do well. And 8 metres? that's roughly the distance from the humvee to the bunker in the afghan map!

So true. I have actually done this, in that order.

Although you forgot mythering parents on that list too.

Recently ive gone back to MW2 (after putting my foot through a door after trying PvP on ST:O - Which is the most broken unbalanced experience ive ever had the misfortune of playing), and ive come up against a whole new problem. I was a rank 54, no prestige, And it was matching me with virg...Sorry, "Hardcore Gamers" - Im a better gamer than your average guy, but against people that havent seen sunlight since the games release, I dont stand a chance.

Im 4,000,000 ish, in the rankings, SURELY there must be people around my level to game with?!?
Try team deathmatch express in MW2. There seems to be a lot of more average players there. I'm above average, and I kicked so much ass that had I the nuke (which I refuse to put on for reasons of it's inane cheapness)I could have launched that sucker at least half a dozen times. but it's funner to just run 'n gun.

and that is exactly why I liked WAW and CoD4 better than MW2. their balanced better, you get the same three kill streaks no matter what, and if you die, you can still sneak up behind the guy and shoot his back off as there are very few places where you can perfectly camp without being highly exposed on at least one side. that and Nazi zombies. Nazi zombies was awesome.

EDIT: I almost forgot, MW2 might be the first game in my collection to have the tittle of "game I returned because I didn't like it". and I kept shadow the hedgehog. shadow the-freakin-hedgehog.

I somehow don't (usually) get angry at games, and don't remember ever getting angry at anyone online.

Actually campers piss me off, but I've never acted on that.

This, totally this. After I had done all the Spec Ops I wanted I sold this game, the lag online was the worst.
No no no, the game that has the worst host advantage/LAG is both of the Gears of War games.
Now that you mention it, have you played Metal Gear Online? Jesus those guys have atrocious connections.

Yes, yes I have. Thank you for making me remember that horrible memory. I really liked the single player and online. The only times I didn't like online was when it was laggy or when one or a couple of people have bad connections so you can't kill them but they can always kill you. It was great when it worked which was 10% of the time

I never liked Call of duty, and I never got what the fuss was about. This is exactly what I saw, and no, I didn't want to come back for more! Hell, even in a one on one game, camping tactics reign supreme. I'll stick to my team fortress, thanks. *rocks team fortress to sleep softly*

Nice post by the way!

The fact that the horrid single player has hardly been mentioned in this thread baffles me, as to me, it's the main reason why I bought the game, and also the main reason I ended up rage-selling it.

That about sums it up.

Even trying to play for fun is difficult, as most people in that game are honorless bastards, and it quickly turns into a competitive rage-fest.
Very true. There doesn't seem to be any sense of fun in the MW community, just competitiveness and hostility.

Being lifeless within or without the presence of the opposite sex does not make a difference, at the end of the day you're still lifeless in both situations.

Note; that this post doesn't state that you 'are' lifeless; it's simply countering your pre-mature defense against such statements toward you. In other words... it's a terrible defense.

I haven't bought MW2 for too many reasons, but I had a hunch it wouldn't work out MP wise. Good thing I had that hunch.

And yet every complaint I've heard on the thread was more constructive and thoughtful than your asinine comment.
