Really, its these kind of stories that make people say they lost faith in humanity... Completely forgeting other more atrocious events like Serria Leon or Rowanda, but thats a rant for another day.

sadly, this is an argument for eugenics: ie only certain people can have/raise children. some people should just not be allowed to have a child: if you dont have enough money, if you cant control rage (like these two), if you cant handle a child. sort of like adoption screening processes, but for getting pregnant.

Those stories make me think that crucifixion should be brought back as a method of execution, or something similar.
Handcuff the people to a metal, possibly wooden, frame outside (preferably in a desert) and with system set up to keep them from dying of dehydration so that they'd either slowly die of exposure, starvation or something else equally drawn-out and painful.

Oh and if you say punishment as a means to prevent others committing crimes, that doesn't work. In fact it was exactly why the mother in the second case didn't get help for her son, so crucifixion, surprisingly, wouldn't make things better. Someone has been playing too much New Vegas.

On second thoughts, might get a new Christ, but after we crucified him again, we'd be breaking even once more...so hardly worth it.

As for the second one, you wouldn't think that you would put your own convenience above the life of your child.

It's not so much "Meh, I don't feel like driving to the hospital. Walk it off." as "Oh fuck I could go to fucking jail/lose my child for causing this injury."

At least she's showing some kind of remorse and is accepting the consequences for her actions.

I'm not sure if it's the same in the US but I would imagine the laws on Manslaughter and Murder are similar to us here in the UK in which case...

Simply put for it to be murder it needs to be pre-planned or thought of, Manslaughter here is killing someone strait away with no prior thought, a murder of rage or something like that where emotions are to blame.

Murder = Unlawful killing of someone will 'Malice aforethought'.

Criminally negligent action also counts as malice aforethought though.

More than you know. It seems that recently more and more people are coming out of the woodwork for these types of crimes.

To be honest I think it's this. There's not more of them, we're just being told about them. To be brutal this isn't normally the kind of story that goes national, much less global, unless there's some kind of official screw up or massive legal action involved.

christ! I'd say its best we hear about it. I mean if we hear about it we can arrest the people responsible and be aware not to trust our own kids with neighbours that might be mental as all hell.

Well that just killed my spirits. It's awful what some people do and are never properly punished for. Whatever she gets is too good for her. What would drive a person to microwave a child?!? What the fuck?!? That's just sick!

The other woman I think is a dumbass, but yeah, you never realize how hard you really hit someone so maybe she didn't know exactly what she had done. Still, a normal smack on the behind of a tap on his cheek would've held the same authoritative force so I can't really give her too much understanding or sympathy.

In the case of the second story. I think it was manslaughter for "unintentionally" hurting the boy to the point of death. But murder for not taking the kid to hospital when she knew he was in pain. Or the other way round. I am unsure.

Nevertheless, she knew she did something wrong and sadly it ended in the worse possible way. Punish her by example!

As for the first case, I'm interested in knowing why she did it. Is it wrong that I hate that they are questioning her mental condition? I hear that far too much.

So you think a person that microwaves their kid doesn't have questionable mental health? Remind me never to leave my kids around you.

As for the dual charges, it's more comment then you think. Just in this case the terms used are quite different rather then the term and a degree. They provide multiple charges because a person cannot be tried for the same crime multiple times, and if they cannot provide evidence of the specifics needed for the harsher charge they still can for the lesser charge, and the person still gets punished. It would be a shame for the prosecution to pursue a murder and have the defense draw doubt on that meeting the qualifications for murder (without even bothering to deny the crime), letting her off without so much as a slap on the wrist.

Their mental health is not questionable. Nobody who does that can be said to be mentally in perfect working order.

I see things in the comments along the lines of 'humans should have stayed in the trees' and 'I've lost faith in humanity.' My favorite was the crucifixion comment posted above. I could argue that you're worse than these people at the very least for being so narrow minded and passing judgement on the entire human race based on the actions of less than 1% of the 8 billion of us that exist.

Avoiding the neolithic revolution wouldn't have done shit, we'd still be killing each other. Nihilism is unproductive and it makes you look like an emotional tart. The death penalty is barbaric, idiotic, and hypocritical.
