Ugh, that. I have only gotten past that part once, without cheating or bumping down the difficulty.
That one time I beat it, strangely, was at my friends, playing the PS3 version of it.
'Course, who knows any updates the PS3 version never got and it probably was already on easy anyway.
I can live with the waves of Combines, manhacks and lack of health, but when you get an inadequate number of turrets, small space, oh, and combine that with THOSE FUCKMOTHERING SHOTGUNERS...
I figure on my next run through, the strategy is to save all my crossbow and magnum rounds for those guys, but only use those weapons right at the end when I've drained all the health/armour from the stations and it's just a few more seconds until the sequence ends - it's always that last rush at the end that finishes me. I've never been good at positioning turrets at the best of times, so I'm never really sure how I ought to do it - wherever I put them they always seem to get tagged by grenades anyway, and it's way too much pressure to right them again when you're being swarmed by EVERYTHING. The problem is if you try and put them in archways or something where they can be hidden from grenades, usually the guys with the shotguns can just smack them over - and if you put them in the open, they get grenaded from everywhere. The shotgunners are pretty nasty enemies because they pretty much invert every survival tactic you can improvise - the more angles of fire you cut out with walls or doors, the easier it is for them to sneak up on a blind side and hit you with some hideous, nearly impossible to dodge damage before you respond, which really whittles you away so quickly!
Still, they seem to have learned from this mistake. The white forest inn ambush in ep2 is far tighter and mroe enjoyable, if still murderously tough thanks to those hunters.
