Playing through 'We don't go to Ravenholm' in Half Life 2, when I was around 11/12. (Jesus fuck, 6 years ago. Wow)

Yeah it scared the shit out of me at the time.

Ocarina of Time has a pretty bad one for me.

It started when I first went down the back of the graveyard. You go down, everything seems fine. The enviroment's a little creepy with spooky background music but that's not too out of the ordinary. Then out of nowhere comes the Gary Glitter zombie ready to dry hump you to death, but not before letting out a shriek and then stepping slowly over towards your paralysed body. Heaven help you if you have bottled fairys as all the do is make you relive the nightmare over and over.

Suffice to say it freaked me out and I didn't go down there for the longest while.

Proceed then some time later (a few months IRL. I had so much fun just mucking about and side-questing in OOT that I didn't even get the three gems needed for the temple of light for months). I go into the temple, pull the sword out and get sent 7 years in the future. I think "okay, gannondorfs caused some issues, I'll sort this mess out!" only to step outside to see the horrifying scene that is Hyrule town in ruins and stepping further to find that the main square is full of those creepy pricks.

I was -really- happy when I heard about the song of the sun. It almost made going into the graveyard actually worth it.

on the first Left 4 Dead, the second campaign (can't remember the name.) We were all getting on the boat when Francis got downed some way away, so, being such a nice guy, I fought my way back through the Horde alone to him. Was nearly there when "TAAAAANK!!!" Got him up, we were running back, he got on, I jumped onto the boat, dodging the Tank, when suddenly I get Smokered from nowhere just as the boat started to leave. It was fucking surreal, the feeling of being left behind as my NPCs were taken to safety. That's hope crushing, isn't it? Having escape snatched away at the last possible second.

Edit: It still ended the campaign, and said "In Memory of Binnsyboy666"

This has already been mentioned before, but my first run through Ravenholm in HL2 fits as one of these.

Not that the whole atmosphere freaked me out or anything (twas' creepy, but not terrifying), but about halfway through I ended up running out of ammo for all of my guns in an area without any barrels or saw blades or anything I could pick up with the Gravity Gun. To make matters worse, there was a poison headcrab zombie and a small pack of poison headcrabs just around the corner.
Facing off against those things with nothing more than a lowly crowbar was one of the most terrifying moments I have ever experienced in a video game.

Another moment in Portal really did it for me...

Right after you get away from the flaming pit, when GLaDOS says that people are coming for me...("assume party position" and such)

I suppose that that prospect really scared me, after having been alone for so long... And that door. Must have been the most terrifying piece of scenery I've ever encountered in a video game, because it made it seem like it would actually happen.
I am now going to spend the day replaying portal, bitches!

When Jorge died in Reach, ***** at me I don't care. His character was awesome despite him being a Spartan. He felt like a real person to me, unlike Emile.
Better 'spoiler this up, there might be still people around who haven't played it yet.

OT: The part in Amnesia: The Dark Descent where you have to avoid the water.
Can't bring myself to play from here.
I don't see why everyone is terrified of that part. There are a lot of things that freak the shit out of me, but that just irked me.

The Haunted Mansion in Timesplitters: Future Perfect still freaks me out.

In Oblivion, I once found a headless corpse in a lake in the mountains north of the Imperial City with nothing on it except a note and some primroses.

The note read something like this:

You don't know me, but I see you every day. I long to tell you how I feel, and I hope that you will return these feelings. Tomorrow, when you go into town, I will be there, awaiting your response to this letter. I will be the one wearing a primrose.

-Your secret admirer
It was honestly the most upsetting thing I've ever seen in a game.

Quick use the bike!

OT: I'm going with the moment from PROTOTYPE when:
You realise that your the virus, and that you can never forget the deaths you have caused. Sent chills up my spine.

Project Zero 1.

A blind woman. Blood-soaked banadages around her eyes. A mask with spikes through the eyes. The ritual of blinding.
Her screams.

Oh her horrible screams.

Yeah, Silent Hill takes all the top ten places... ;-)

But I think the encounters with Pyramid head in SH2 take the cake, in terms of (literally) haunting me in my dreams. I´m still very proud I actually managed to play it to the end.
Such a great game, but it really freaked me out so many times.

Ahem,

heres the scene, the doors on the other end of the building are being battered you can hear it resounding through the entire building. you make your way around collecting what you need, and all the while feel on edge when the sound stops randomly every now and again, with the items you need, you make your way down the wooden stairs. at the bottom you see the door you want to head towards but wait what is this ? the banging has stopped.....

S.T.A.R.S...

CRASH, fucking nemesis come flying through the window and chases you out of the station !

fucking hate that scene. still one of the scariest i beleive.

King's Quest 6 freaked me out early on with it's death scenes, particularly ones involving the Catacombs or being swept out to sea. Every death was followed by the player watching Alexander's ghost entering Hell/Underworld. "Tickets...please."

That game haunted my childhood, as much as I loved it.

They cut Henry with meat cleavers. He was on the ground screaming in the middle of a park and they just kept on hacking, nobody even bothered to help. Definitely one of the most haunting moments in a game.

Doesn't still haunt me, but it did for awhile: The two nightmare sequences in the original Max Payne. The shriek of your wife, the cry of your baby all around you. Even more unsettling was the second nightmare when Max gives this horrific scream if you fall off the lines of blood.
I actually found the "real" sequence in wich Max's Wife and Child are murdered much more haunting.

The Nightmares, as unsettling as they were, are surreal. But the actual flashback/intro felt like something that can actually happen in real life. And that's terrifying.

Also, it features the ominous "Is this the Payne Residence?"

Psychonauts, when you're in that lady's head with the dance party. Everything is all happy and everyone is dancing everywhere with fun light shows going off and you come across an innocent looking room off to the side.

In this room is the stuff of nightmares.

The Flood in Halo 3 is nothing compared to the CE one.
