"You're a girl? And you like video games? (pause) ... are you a lesbian?"

I happen to be bisexual but it's not gaming that "turned me gay".

It's boobs.

"Yeah you seem like the type that would play violent video games. Next thing we know we'll see you on the news after going mental and killing everyone"

I didn't know what to respond with. Everyone knows how laid back and hyper happy I am so why on earth this guy said this to me with complete and utter seriousness just completely took me back. And it's such a vague sweeping generalisation of gaming.

I told him he's an idiot. Then I ignored him for a long while. Now he's always trying to be really nice and talk to me, but frankly, if someone can be that judgemental over something they know nothing about AND include me in that, then they're not really a friend friend. Acquaintance you will be!

Just last night:
Roommate: Is this that game with the dog?
Me: What?
Roommate: You know, the one where it's three characters and that dog...
Me: Dragon Age Origins?
Roommate: Yes!
Me: No, this is the Just Cause 2 demo.

In his defense, he's in his 30s (no offense, older guys), recently moved to the US from Hungary, and was pretty high.
do you have a prob with us Hungarians?

OT: "what fun is there in pushing buttons to make the stuff on the screen change?"

asks my cousin while staring at the tv with 3 empty packets of chips on the ground

My dad once said TV is better than VGs because TV is and I quote...

While he was watching CSI, I might add.
Wow. Just wow.

My mother regularly says games are stupid, mostly just to piss me off. But she sincerely believes that games are detrimental to my personality. WHICH MAKES NO SENSE, especially since I've been playing games since I was 6.

Someone on these forums said not too long ago that all gamers were fat, sweaty losers who lived with their mothers after graduating college and had no social skills. So that guy.
And he Probably lives with his parents as well.

Games are for kids.
They need to change "video games" to interactive entertainment or something. Would get rid of some of the stigma.

Ugh... far too often when I talk about video games as an artistic storytelling medium, someone (usually over 40, but even some people at my college) will just shake their head and close their eyes, as if to say "Aw, your ideas are so cute: don't worry, someday you'l grow up and see the world like it really is, when you're a big boy!"

There is little I hate more than that ignorant reaction...
I would have punched the person who said that.

not along the same lines as most of the things in this thread, but:

"what? why wouldn't the sims3 play on my 6 year old desktop that cant run msn and itunes at the same time without taking around 10 seconds to load up a conversation window?"

Heard from a guy in my class:
"Games with graphic that isn't as good as todays game sucks, and retro gamers need to grow up.
My PS3 is better than your SNES! haha!"

It's peolpe like that is a shame to the world of gamers. Graphics means little compared to gameplay, I say

My dad once blamed what he called 'the death of common sense' on people playing more video games.
He said something like this; 'Kids are spending too much time on their Playstations or Xboxes. I heard somewhere that the average is about 30 to 40 hours a week. They aren't going to learn how to look after themselves or anything useful playing those things'.

That's all I can think of really...
Well... I have had the same concern for myself numerous times. When I started seeing every other possible activity in the world as an alternative to videogames, I started wondering if I had crippled future opportunities.
