F-Zero GX's story mode makes me cry.

It's pretty hard, too.
And just about everything on the thrid dificulty.
There's an unlockable 4th difficulty.

Which I cleared every cup on, and story mode has a hard mode that you unlock too.

And you have to both of those to unlock the BADASS big blue music.

^^;

That said, either SUPAPLEX or Ikaruga are hardest I've played and completed, but Touhou games are quite hard, as is IWTBTG/Battletoads first few playthroughs...GH3 has quite a few difficult songs (raining blood, TTFAF), but again, once you get it, you've got it. Same with Stepmania.

To be honest, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say Starcraft - just hear me out a second:

Starcraft combines the tactical strategy of unit position, long term strategies on economics, mind games, split-second decision making ability, the hand coordination of competitive level FPS playing, and an ability to multi-task that as far as I am aware is unparalleled by any other game in existence, all in one package.

In other words, Starcraft takes talent and a LOT of time commitment. It's impossible to determine how talented you are after playing for only 2 months and even if you aren't particularly talented you can become "okay" with enough of a time investment. If you're not dedicated, you have don't have a choice at playing this game competitively.

I remember having a PS1 game called Tunguska. It was horrible.

Not only were the traps impossible (from what I remember) but it was just an unbearable game, one of the only ones I've never finished.

TouHou 7: Perfect Cherry Blossom

I mean seriously... I had the patience to beat Megaman Zero 2 on hard with no elves.

But I have yet to beat this game on EASY with no continues. Made it to the final boss, Yuyuko , and whittled her down to the final attack, and I lost my last life....sigh (At least it's a really fun game...)

I've even beaten TouHou 8: Imperishable Night on easy with the good ending and lives to spare.

But TouHou 7 remains out of my reach because I suck at fighting Yuyuko....

Thats somebody else BTW, how I envy them.

R-type for the SMS, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the NES, or Battletoads for the Megadrive (Genesis). (That damn snake pit!)

Also, I dare anybody to complete Tetris in a single setting. Go on, try it! The final boss is a total bad-ss. Trust me on this.

Real difficulty or fake difficulty?

Real would be Ninja Gaiden 2.
Fake would be Call of Duty.(all of them since United Offensive)

The difference between real and fake? Fake difficulty is made difficult by random shit thrown in. Like a boss fight where the arena has a moving floor, spike walls and moving spikes. Or respawning enemies, with (ranged)high damage and explosives.

fate of hellas for me

because it gives you no time to build up an army, you always start with a little group of people (5-10people) as an army, limited resources which run out way to quickly and enemies which rush you instantly in large groups.

i only got to the second level on both campaigns.

i found robot warlords prety tough aswell.

For singleplayer it has to be the Super Nintendo ''Super STAR WARS'' games...oh how I loathed them...yet I was oddly addicted to them.

Multiplayer though, it took me quite a while to get used to battlefield 2 and it's problem of 'oh you just shot me in the head but all you got was dust' problem.

SNES version of battletoads for me. I got the game when I was 8 and FINALLY completed the hoverbike level this year (I'm 22 now)... and then the next level was even harder  Hell, even the bonus level is hard in that bloody game. AND IT HAS NO CHEATS!

Contra and Ninja Gaiden2. The original Prince of Persia wasn't exactly difficult but the controls were a gigantic piece of shit and a side of bacon.
