Not really the monster, but what happened. See, in Fallout 3 I fast traveled the the German Police Town HQ. I'd only walked past it and discovered it, so I had never gone inside. I spawned outside a door and immediately started walking around trying to find an entrance. I could have sworn I heard something walking behind me, but I just guessed it was Dogmeat or something following me. Well the footsteps got closer and closer until I turned around to confirm that it was Dogmeat when I saw this super mutant right behind me with his nailboard mid-swing and about a foot away from my head. Scared me half to death, but two shotgun blasts to the face and he was out. So I continued walking when I turned the corner and right as I was turning, I came face to face with a centaur and that also made me jump. I have the worst luck with stuff like that.

I also think that the scariest looking monster was the village chief in that burning barn from Resident Evil 4. He just creeped me out... OH and the Iron Maidens from RE4. When one of those came walking around a corner, I near shit my pants.

Ravenholm does get me freaked out every time I play it. And the Regenerator in dead space had been sweating and swearing as I ran for my life.

Scariest creature I've ever encountered in a game? Some nurse in Silent Hill 2 that looks like a cross between a RealDoll, Joan Rivers, and a fetish hooker.

i both love and hate moments like that in a game. It's good because its really exciting and shows a good game thats immersed you, but its bad cuz it makes a scary game even more scary

Allosaurs or Velociraptors from the original Carnivores. You'd be stalking a herbivore, getting ready for the killing shot, and suddenly you'd hear a handful of running footsteps and the carnivore had hit you. With putting so much concentration into stealth and pursuing, having something kill you from nowhere like that is nerve-racking.

The Tuurngaite (I think thats how its spelled) From Penumbra: Black Plaque They are these deformed humans, you can't kill them.
Ninja'd!

I guess I'll go with- the T-Rex in Tomb Raider 3. It's almost indestructible, you encounter it in a small cave, it moves faster than you can sprint, and you're a one hit kill. I actually have to take deep breaths before facing it.

I would have to say the Tonberry to this day I still have nightmares about those little lantern carrying bastards.
It's as though they equated a sinister, supernatural and indestructible evil which to this day has been unvisited by fear.

The first time I stumbled across a Deathclaw in Fallout 3. I literally thought it was the devil manifest in pixels.

Definitely the fast zombies in Half-Life, that's pretty creepy, especially cause you tend to only have a gravity gun at that point, and how they jump out randomly a whole lot.

Painkiller is kinda scary, not in the situation, but the creature designs I find kinda disturbing, which is why it's awesome when you mow them down with penis-extension-esque stakes and shurikens and chain guns.

Fuckin' Ichthyosaurs. [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vl9DpD84wPQ&NR=1] Those damn things scared the fuck out of me in Half-Life 1. HL2 only features them in the beginning and no real attacking occurs, in the first they would chase you the fuck down, and it ruined water parts for me. I didn't want to go near water after going around a corner to be face-to-face with one of them.

I find many bosses in the Metroid series to be a little disturbing. The SA-X and Nightmare take the cake for Fusion, and maybe Mother Brain in all of them.

inb4 Giygas from Earthbound.

In Bioshock, that crazed doctor that stands RIGHT BEHIND YOU when you go to pick up the tonic in that steam-filled room. Nearly shit myself when that happened.
This guy. Even now, when I know he's coming, he still manages to scare the hell out of me.
