World In Conflict
When Bannon sacrifices himself to hold off the Russians until the nuke hit. I from all the screw ups he made that he sucked, but he redeemed himself so that when he died I would actually miss him. So sad that right there I replayed the beginning of the campaign just so he would be alive again :'(

I agree with Aeris Gainsborough, but I think that the protagonist died so many times in MW2, it almost became regular.

I think Kerrigan in Starcraft was pretty surprising. I was like; "NOES".
as well developed as the starcraft characters were, i just couldn't get sad at their deaths for 2 reasons, 1 is that you see a 10 pixel tall character explode into a pool of blood in an almost comical way, and 2 is that they always come back, even if sometimes infected like kerrigan or mengsk on the n64 version, and fenix too. i bet like tassadar somehow gets back alive in sc2
Ah, but it still had impact for me. I read a lot, you see, so I can identify with words on a page, so ten pixels tall is a step up for me.
Also, Kerrigan's fall and subsequent rise again were rather well done, I thought.

Plus, if you played Brood War, you have to kill Fenix properly. As Kerrigan.

Snake's "suicide" at the end

Actually he doesn't die if you wait through the next bit of credits it shows that he immediatly changed his mind and then some stuff is explained to Snake by this dude who I know was an important character in the story.

For me it's Shinjiro from Persona 3. First he was there, then he wasn't. It was so sudden...
Also, the way that he died was just excellent.

When I sent
Kaiden to his death in Mass Effect

That was I choice I regretted the rest of the game.

And on a side note... How could you not see that at least Roach was gonna get it? It didn't surprise me at all. But I could never take the story in MW2 seriously, could be why I saw it coming.

Also
Eli in Half-life 2: Episode 2.
That really came as a shock to me, did not see THAT one coming.

I would have spoilered the OP.

Mercury's death
Agreed... I would have never expected that to happen in what appeared to be a game focused so much on gameplay. I was really surprised by how teary I got when I saw that.

I'd also go with Oblivion and

Martin's transformation/death. He was one of the few, if not the only, character I really liked in the game, and the poor bloke has to sacrifice himself only a few days after he's named Emperor.

Manny Escuela.

Granted, when I was doing his missions, I kept thinking "I hate you, I hate you, I hate you, I hate you, I hate you, I HATE YOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUkillyouwithfire..."

Then Elizabeta shot him in the face while being high, prompting me to say "Whoa! I didn't actually want him to die. Not like that, anyway."

It actually was pretty sad when I had to deliver his body to a street surgeon. I felt sorry for him.

Then I hung out with my cousin and all was forgotten.
Yeah, that kind of got me too. Sure, he was kind of an annoying fuck, but his heart was in the right place

Rhyme, in the World Ends With You

but maybe that doesn't count, since most of the main characters are already dead, and she gets resurrected somehow in the game credits

I'm surprised no one mentioned this one, what with all the Call of Duty love this thread is getting:
Pvt. Jackson from Call of Duty 4. You're riding a victory wave, having rescued that downed heli pilot and are hauling ass away from the city, only to be nuked. At which point you have to stumble around for a minute, horrified with what's just happened and hearing children laughing. And the worst thing is, if you hadn't rescued that pilot, you probably would've made it out of there.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Episode 2. Almost made me cry.
Oh god, me too. HL2 has the most compelling story I have seen yet.

As for Ghost and Roach, I felt nothing. I honestly didn't care at all. Now, if Gaz died, that would suck, as he was in CoD4.

Which character's death had a great story impact or freaked you out? At the top of my head, I have two death. Modern Warfare when Gaz got shot and MW2 when Roach and Ghost died.

Oh yes, I forgot that one, I was so pissed when he died.

Ever-present from Mother 3

Hinawa being killed by the T-Rex

'Twas deeply moving. There were others, but few that I didn't see coming, or expect, or need to happen to progress the story in an awesome fashion.

What about Captain Price? I'm pretty sure he was in almost every single freaking Call of Duty game since the first and I'm pretty sure he died in almost all of them as well. How he died and came back so many times and went from the 1940's to the present makes hardly any sense at all to me.

While not very sad, the most surprising death was in I Wanna Be The Guy when the moon fell out of the sky and killed you.
Then again, knowing that game I should have expected it.

Yeah I was like "holy shit!"
Never liked him but that really was a bad way to go... guy was only tryin to help the Community and a coked up ***** I liked even less killed him.

Romans death, I never really liked Roman that much although WAY more than I liked Manny but I was really angry at Faustin for that, and really wished I hadda killed him when I had the chance...
Come to think of it, that was probably the most compelling ending ive played in recent memory
