"Hey, you play Team Fortress?

What, you mean not Team Fortress 2? Well, I'm going to shove it in your face how much better the version I play is than yours, either though YouTube comments, chat, or even your own community forum! Haha! Grenade spam! Two shotguns! 'Conc' jumping! Such insanity!

Wait, you do play Team Fortess 2? Oh well I'll shut up then.

On the PS3?!???!?!?"

And people say the console communities are immature.

By no means the worst community, but it's very annoying.

However, in my first ever game of Counter-Strike I found more racism and trash talking than in my months of Xbox live.

MW2 community, definitely.
4chan is pretty horrible (refer to "Baby fuck" above), but that community is based around being horrible, so you don't go there without knowing what you're getting.

The MW2 community has every opportunity to be nice, but it's 97% whiners, cheaters (I count you too, prestige-hackers) and the rest are probably nice people... maybe.
The steampowered forums are pretty sloppily moderated too, so stupidity abound. Intelligent posts are shot down without a second thought (and not by good arguments either).
Considering the quality of the gamers (at least in TF2) this surprises me. I personally think a solid ban-spree is in order on those forums.

I think my criteria for a bad community is kind of "What I got/what I expected"

Although this has been done to death i'm saying MW2. I just mute everyone the second i see the little white speaker come up on my screen, it's a shame because i have met some nice people on there, but they're rare.

but..i have NEVER..in SIX years of playing any game on XBOX LIVE gone an hour in a row without actually hearing a ten year old call me a "******" or "******". to be quite honest, between the last three call of duties i am POSITIVE that 90% of all people on XBL with mics that actually speak are racist morons. (or really young OBVIOUSLY white kids that need to rap in their mic...THAT is irony)

keeping the peanut butter off that jelly,

huge agreement on that one.

I cant say MW2 or whatnot on many of these, I am just not into gun games. FPS's have tended to bore me for a long time. I have hopped on L4D a few times (I left the 2 off intentionally) and have had relatively good experiences most of the time on that one.

WoW forums have been completely filled in my experience with people yelling at people for literally anything. Your character build, your server, where you live, the color of your pants, what you had for breakfast, anything. Even 4Chan doesnt get that bad sometimes. Speaking of which...

4Chan. I hate 4Chan. Mostly because of /b/tards. And even then, its because of the /b/ raids they used to do. Not sure if they do anymore, but yeah. However, I havent seen actualy trolling or hate mongering on there for quite a while. It pains me to defend them, but even the racial slurs and grotesque imagery is rarely aimed at someone or meant as hurtful or spitefall. Ever tell a racial joke and laugh? I have. They can be funny. But I have no qualms with any ethnicity or walks of life, its just humor. And often thats where /b/ is coming from. But the raids are still horribly immature. *shrugs*

Oddly I didnt see a mention of EQ from way back when. I still think nothing catches Everquest (forums or game) as far as elitism and douchbaggery and nerd rage. Havent played in a very long time, so who knows now, but back then... it was sometimes just not worth it to play. Not due to being offended, just tired of dealing with everyone else.

As far as like PSN or XBL, as I said, I dont play FPS's so I could be wrong, but when I play something like Midnight Club or Need For Speed or Test Drive Unlimited, the wannabe rappers and ten year olds just flock out of the woodwork to show me their "pimped whip" and how cool they are in a racing simulation. I even had a kid beat me in a race and exclaim thats how he gets the girls, followed by nonsensical racial slurring. To which I was astounded. I want to be there for that pickup line. "Hey baby, I am on the leaderboards for best time in Midnight Club... how would you like to spend some time with me?"

On a positive note, I really like the forums here on the escapist. Are there assholes? Probably. Are some posters elitist pricks? I should think so. Are some mods jerks that feel a sense of power because they have a ban button? Likely. However, I really like these forums as at least in the threads I have read / posted, I havent seen this: " r u sk8ing 2nite?" and other such horribly netiquettes. Here I have seen weird and new ideals such as attempts at proper spelling (noones perfect, and misspells and typos will happen), full sentences, punctuation, and real damn words. I like it.

{Yes I know I do not have an apostrophe in most conjunctions... I understand the hypocrisy there. Sorry.)

And now I have officially havered far too long. Apologies.

What do the Escapists think is the most unfriendly online community? Be it a game or a website. I say MW2. Im a Halo veteran so I thought I was ready for any asshole I could meet in a videogame. I was wrong, dead wrong.
Its a tie between 4chan and youtube to me.

I think rather then a single game the whole of Xbox live in general is just the home of the cretin hiding behind the anonymity of the internet.

I have a 360, a PS3 and play games on my laptop and i come across about a quarter of the complete ignorant trash talking wana be tough guys in the latter two. I duno whether its because traditionally more kids are likely to only of been able to afford a 360 so that's why it makes it an extension of their school playground but at the same time a lot of the finger quotes "adults" are complete no hopers too so who knows.

With that said i think most people are just complete ass holes anyway regardless of whether their using a router or not.....

Xbox Live's community. PSN is largely silent, 4chan has good moments. Xbox live has nothing left but foul mouthed 12 year olds and people like me who've thrown away their headset and mute everything.

The only one I've ever spent enough time on to notice is Youtube. I must now post my obligatory youtube screenshot. It was on a cat video.

Maple Story.

Single worst online gaming community EVER and i played it 4 years ago when the community was considered nice. I checked it out recently and it was at least 80 times worse. Practically every player i passed either yelled out Gives mesos plox!! or dont ks me noob!! or L2P fuxing nub!! When i was just walking by or just started a new character. The forums are nothing but unmoderated trash talking 12 year old wannabes and the in game economy is completely out of whack because of the shear amount of hackers and greedy bastards. Everyone who doesn't have cashshop items are labeled instant noobs, insulted and refused parties.

I stopped playing instantly because of the community. Never going back. Especially since the only enjoyable party of the game, seeing as it lacks a PVP system was playing with friends doing PQs.

I warn you now. STAY AWAY.

Wow... that's pretty bad for what i've seen on YouTube. I guess i'll add that to my list that includes MW2 and Counter-Strike. I'd add others that people have mentioned (4chan or Steam), but the reputation alone has been enough to keep me very far away from those places.

Don't know if this applies, but when I played Guild Wars like, there were SO FEW that communicated and socialised with people. I did half the game with out knowing a soul!
I tried to make friends but so few people did anything of social there. Not exactly unfriendly but definetly not friendly.

Oh I was going to say MW2's community.

Its a deadly combination of hackers, griefers, and spammers.
Don't forget the 8 year olds yelling down the mic "DO THE GLITCH!" on Highrise.

Oh yeah! MW2 or CoD 4.

CoD 4 not as much though.

I'm not as involved in online communities as I once was, but music communities, as a rule, can be fairly brutal. Particularly if it's a band-based forum; especially if the band members posts to the forum. It often degenerates into a sychophantic free for all, with some 'fans' trying to demonstrate how much more of a real fan they are, or how much more the band likes them, then other fans, etc. It can be fairly entertaining to watch, if you're bored at work, etc., but it's rather pathetic and sad. And the elitist attitudes can be pretty ridiculous too, which sadly, does extend to many gaming forums.

If you've got so little going on in your life that it becomes subsumed by your existence on a forum, there's little hope for you. "The interwebs is serious bidness" and all that.

Though MW1 and 2 are obvious answers, they are still my immediate choice.

Though Counterstrike is around 1 or 2 notches below that, i've heard someone blame computer players for "No Clipping" (0_o)

Lucky for me, Steam isn't as bad
