OP, you're talking out of your ass. There's so much good music to be found everywhere you look, in rock, punk and metal. Rancid, Against Me!, Cancer Bats, The Bronx, The Gaslight Anthem. These are some of my current favourite bands and they're all proof that many different kinds of rock are thriving. Don't be ignorant and pessemistic
Read Rock Sound magazine, that'll open your eyes

dude, your not looking hard enough, looking towards pop isn't the way anyway, you said you like tenacious d, think all thier awsome songs got no 1's? leave the chart stuff to the boring, shitty acts such as bieber, try pandorasbox.com(think thats it), start with tenacious d and then look for simlar bands from there, good luck :)

Remember, theres a whole world out thier, full of hooks, harmonies, ripping solos, and enough creativity to make pink floyd impressed.

Try these.

Hell, I'm gonna throw in some 'club' music.

These are all moderately mainstream, at least where I'm from. That's a solid hour of non-obscure, mainstream-friendly (cept maybe Mars Volta) music which I enjoy.

so im looking to listen to some new good music....unfortunately there is none to be found. so then i looked onto youtube just for a small glimpse of hope. first names that come up are justin beaver, lady gaga, rihanaana, and miley cyrus. it then occurs to me that no one sent me a letter or an email to Music's funeral. How long has it been dead, seriously? it really saddens me that the last good band that i know of is Tenacious D. Any thoughts on this?
Look harder.

Music isn't dead, it's changing. If music snobs like you can't keep up, then prepared to become one of those old people who "shake it" to their old people music while youngsters roll their eyes.
Wow. He's looking for advice and you berate him like that? If you enjoy modern pop music and all that then more power to you, but let the man make up his own mind before you put him on the chopping block sir. Sure things change in music, but that doesn't mean that the listener must change what he or she likes to stay current and relevant. Example, i'm pushing 30 and I don't hate much if anything when it comes to music. Art is art and to each his own, but I will say this: the whole "auto-tune" trend where every male singer sounds like a sensitive cyborg makes me want to stab a baby panda. Does that make me wrong? Does that make me a "music snob?" To you and others like you, maybe... But my opinion is equally as valid as yours sir.

I think everyone that says "disregard the top 40" is really missing out on some good stuff. The National's album High Violet was in the Top 10 a couple of weeks ago, LCD Soundsystem's This is Happening and Janelle Monae's the Archandroid* have also sold really well.
Even some of the stuff that people on this forum are actually thinking about when they say "Top 40" is actually really good. For example, You Belong to Me is a massively catchy, sweet and memorable, but has probably been dismissed by lots of people here because its "Top 40". While I Gotta Feelin' is probably one of the more inane songs ever released, I can think of few things that work better in a club setting, as a massive singalong or as a predrinks getting in the zone song. Single Ladies is just a great pop song.
I don't know when the idea that being catchy, fun or having good singers doesn't make a song good caught on but it really should stop.

*a massively acclaimed album in the traditional pop/RnB, something that hasn't really happened in a couple of decades. I would recommend giving her a listen if you think traditional pop is dead.

You are searching in a totally wrong way.

And music isn't dead, look at this:

And i would go find more stuff, but you should do that yourself. :p
Holy Shit an Opeth song that I can actually listen to, has the world ended, or did they just change their style?
I'm not bashing them its just that the few times I tried to give this band a chance I was immediately turned off by the guttural growling that the vocalist used to convey the lyrics.

Music isn't dead, it just hides from the general public after years and years of torment and abuse. I've found a couple of its hiding places. It's not hard, you just have to look a little harder (or ask the Internet, but here there be dragons).

Don't know if you've listened to Avenged Sevenfold, but their music is pretty damn good.
Amazing Drummer and Guitarist.

It's amusing that shadowstriker86 made this reply-provoking thread (which is incredibly naive) and hasn't said anything since.

Hey Airbourne are good check them out, they sound like AC/DC but a little bit modern and best of all their Aussies. But yeah I agree with you music has gone shit now, before the 00's even pop music was good, most things that came out were good but now its just recycled crap. Yeah its ironic that I say Airbourne sound like AC/DC but fuck you, they're probably the best Rock Revival band around and they put on a bloody amazing concert aswell. But still I hope they fix the other genres as well, it seems most genres have gone down the shitter aswell as rock.

As of now, I have a 'big 4' of terrific Symphonic Metal bands: Nightwish, Epica, Krypteria, and Within Temptation.
Are After Forever, Delain, Edenbridge, Lunatica, or Stream of Passion on your personal radar? If not, they really should be, as I can practically guarantee you will love them if that's your current "big four" of symphonic metal.

On topic: Of course good music isn't dead, you just have to know where to look (hint: Not on the radio!). I have no sympathy for anyone too lazy to delve below the banal pop surface of the broad spectrum of music - expecting that to be amazing is like panning for gold in your shower in terms of unwarranted optimism (I love that analogy, heh).

Alternately you could always *cough* shameless plug *cough* let strangers on the internet like yours truly guide you to the good music [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.198217-Gildans-Guide-to-Good-Music-Devin-Townsend-Project-Addicted].

Let me get something I posted in a similar topic like this a few weeks ago.

Good Job. You classified all current music based on what you hear on the radio.

But seriously, if you don't want to listen to shit, turn your radio off, now. There are PLENTY of rock bands and artists making music today doing brilliant things, it just depends where your taste lies. If you're searching along the line of grunge into the shitty "post-grunge" bands of today I'm not surprised you think music at the moment is shite.

Look for music elsewhere, saying that all music from this time is shit just makes you look misinformed. There are still good artists dwelling out there.

You basically went to two stars from the Disney channel (Bieber isn't but he might as well be) and 2 other singers, and suddenly music's "dead"?

Grow some balls, stop whining.
