You want good music? Don't look for the popular stuff.

Pop music has been cock piddle for all of my life. There is little to no distinction now between songs except in how often it's overplayed by their sponsors. To use the obvious example, most "rap" songs I hear on pop stations sell for two reasons:
1) Their "rebellious" lyrics (more like "retarded"..if you seriously consider what most of these assholes are rapping about, it's actually rather stupid even if you worship the gangsta lifestyle)
2) The amount of bass buried in the tracks for people who want to blast it to the world.

That's it.
To me, it sounds manufactured and cheap. Like it was designed to fit into some commercial more than to be listened to. And I'm not just picking on Rap, but damn near everything you can find on TV or your local major radio station (in the US. I cannot speak for other countries).

Dig elsewhere, and dig deep if you want actual music. I know I'm breaking my rule about objective and subjective reasoning, but fuck it. I haven't been able to stand pop music radio since I was 5 years old, and the problem cannot possibly lie squarely with just me.
Now it has taken over completely.

Muse in my opinion are an absolutely brilliant band. I recommend you listen to them because they really are brilliant.

I love a lot of mainstream pop and hip hop. I also love a lot of other stuff.

But I come from a music making background and can appreciate just how difficult it is to create content with so many constraints like one has to do with pop music.

If you can't find good music, then either you have no taste or you are too stupid or lazy to look for it. Go on Pandora.com, type something in. There is plenty of good but obscure stuff out there, and even stuff that will surprise you because it has been in front of you the whole time. Music can't be judged by the radio anymore, it has become an instrument of the feckless masses. It's like judging current events based on FOX News

so im looking to listen to some new good music....unfortunately there is none to be found. so then i looked onto youtube just for a small glimpse of hope. first names that come up are justin beaver, lady gaga, rihanaana, and miley cyrus. it then occurs to me that no one sent me a letter or an email to Music's funeral. How long has it been dead, seriously? it really saddens me that the last good band that i know of is Tenacious D. Any thoughts on this?
So really, what you mean is that the music YOU listen to is dead? Because I know of a load of new bands I like. And no, not Miley and her ilk.

They make lots of soft songs and ballds, their album Damnation is full of soft songs, and no growly ones.

But, you should open your mind to the growling. Whats so bad about it? Its like a demon is speaking to you, telling a story.

And your missing out the amazing compositions and epic atmospheres of this band.

Give them growlers a try dude, growling is beautiful as well.
Damnation is actually on my big list of albums to buy at some point. As for growling, it used to be an instant thumbs down from me, but then I mellowed to the point where I'd keep listening to see if they ever stop growling and provide me with some actual singing, and then weigh up whether the parts I wholeheartedly enjoy outweigh the parts I grudgingly tolerate before deciding if I hate it or not.

Now I'd say that while I definitely don't enjoy growling for it's own sake and any song that only growls can piss off, there are times where I actually want to hear it as it can be used to provide a wonderful contrast. Most times I'm still just tolerating it, but there are definitely some bands/songs/what have you that benefit from judicious use of harsh vocals.

As far as I'm concerned, anyone who says "(subject) is dead" is narrow-minded.
You, Sir, win this discussion.

I agree completely.
Anyone that thinks music is dead, is obviously deluded and too lazy too even look for some good music.
With the internet it's easier than ever!

The only good pop was from the 50s and 60s.
Nowadays if you want good music you have to look hard.
Here's a nice bit of variety for ya: Blind Gaurdian, the Yardbirds, the Tops, Band of Horses, Electric Light Orchestra, Big Red(You can find his music on newgrounds), Neil Diamond.

Yeah, I like classic rock. While Cage the Elephant may be new, they still have the classic rock feel to me. Music isn't dead.

1. Good is subjective.
2. Music isn't really alive, so it shouldn't be called dead.
3. If you think there's no good music out there, you've either listened to the good stuff already, or you have poor tastes.

My strategy, "Be loyal to the music, not the artist."

Porcupine Tree. Hands down. it's like psychedelic rock + psychedelic metal + atmospheric.
You sir, know what you're talking about. I just saw them live in Toronto a couple months ago and it was simply amazing. One of the best concerts I'll ever see.

Also check out the band dEUS.
Look up the songs Eternal Woman, The Architect, Favourite Game by them on youtube.

Like many have said, music is not dead and will never die, but it can certainly feel that way when your only exposure is radio and MTV.

"Man, I fuckin' hate this mainstream shit man.. Its been fuckin' goin' downhill since the fuckin 80s man. I all fuckin' hear on the radio is pop shit, where's the soul gone man?"
This sums up my opinion.

Seriously, you need to look harder.

And if that still isn't good enough, make music of your own.
