Yea it is, of course is it sad I wasn't surprised when it happened in Texas
Dude, seriously? This kind of shit can happen anywhere; and I do mean anywhere. Don't be mad at Texas, be mad at the society that allows the kind of entitlement that leads to these kind of abuse, but most of all be mad at the asshole that raped the poor girl in the first place. News flash: stories like this come from California and Texas because they're two of the most populous states therefore things happen there more just because of sheer numbers. I'm a Texan, and damn proud of it and you can bet that most of us are just as pissed off about this as you are if not more. This is for all you guys saying "that's Texas for you". The problem isn't geography, and it's not unique to the American South/Southwest. The problem is people being assholes, and that is the only universal constant. I've never considered myself one of "those" Texans, but this just pisses me off. When you place the blame on anyone other than the person responsible for something like this, you do severe injustice to the victim.
Nah, when football takes precedent over common sense, it's pretty unique to Texas and the southwest.
Really? I remember Michael Vick getting off pretty easy for his dog fighting ring. And Kobe getting off Scott free for raping a fan. Then there was the whole O.J. fiasco. I could go on, but you get the point. Fact is people get off when they have connections or they're important to the community in some way. That's the way "justice" has always worked, and is in no way unique to Texas, or even America. I'm sure many similar occurrences have happened all over the world.
High school and college football. Holy piss, like I really had to specify.
You're from there. You already know what I was saying. You just wanted a buffer post.[/quote]

Um, no. Seriously, do a Google search. These things happen in all levels of sports in all parts of the country/world. Depending on what sport is biggest in a region more should-be-felons get off because of affiliation with whatever local sports team/organization. Sure, some football stars get off in Texas, but if you look at states where basketball is more popular I guarantee you'll find basketball stars getting similar treatment. Same goes for soccer, field hockey, wrestling, whatever sport/event is big in whatever region. I don't like it any more than you do, but the problem isn't Texas. The problem is that people who are "important" get treated special, no matter where they are.

Dear, Texas
FUCK YOU. You are rednecks and we are actively praying to every god that we can think of with the intent of making you secede, thus sparing us any further embarrassment.
Love, the rest of the country.
speaking as a foreigner, They really do give you a bad name. When you don't know many other americans personally it is hard to not think of you as racist fuckheads.
I (as well as most of my friends and family) are aware of this. It's the reason I want to desperately go somewhere else (preferably somewhere where they don't ban and/or cut my favorite horror movies, Britain), and it's also the reason my sister plans on moving to the French countryside.
Oh I wouldn't recommend France. It's not doing so well.

Aaaah Teen Angst. Because Texas is mankind's representative right?

But this time I will point out the wrongs of this instead of screaming "OH NOES!1! HUMANS AR3 DICKS!!"

Ahem, that girl was raped and it's very brave of her to even go to school. The psychological damage done to her can not be felt or described unless you're a psychiatrist a victim. The fact that him and his friend didn't go to Prison or at least be expelled from school is a horrible act that really is wrong.

Why should someone cheer for someone that has done great physical and mental damage? People should be first to sports and the fact that the school put him on the team because they wanted to win is a first-class example of greed and selfishness.

Now if you'll excuse me.

UNLEASH THE KRAKEN!

you know, it really is just as sad as this story that when presented with this horrendous and blatant violation of basic human dignity, people will make the discussion about texas.

comedic gold :)

These "football towns" are actually becoming a problem everywhere, not just Texas. The community wants their team to win so bad the school board will do everything it can to make sure their star players are pushed through school with straight A's and completely taken care of so they can focus on their sport. The real problem (in my opinion) is that the community cares more about their team winning than the people who play, or the others effected by players. Nothing else matters as long as they win. And the school board knows that these are the people that pay the taxes and can have them lowered, or raised.

My history and English teacher actually quit because they couldn't deal with the pressure from everyone else about trying to push the "athletes" through when they were failing because they wouldn't do any of their work.

But for the story, reading about what she went through did make me sad. My faith in humanity is already so low it didn't really surprise me this happened, though, which is already pretty sad.

Just so most of you know, this thread is about a rape victim. This is not about Texas. Please stop being trolls. Jerks are no fun, so please stop making fun of Texas, when this is about a poor girl discriminated against because she was raped.

OT: Yes, this is the kind of mind numbing stupidity that has been destroying my hope for humanity since I was seven years old. That a girl who has gone through one of the most traumatic events available in today's society can be kicked off of an extracurricular team for refusing to say one single word that isn't even necessarily said at every game, is a kind of mind blowing I had yet to experience. I'm awestruck by this. Thanks OP for bringing this to my attention.

And for anyone interested, this site (http://msmagazine.com/blog/blog/2010/10/15/cheerleader-required-to-cheer-for-man-who-assaulted-her/)has a petition that you can electronically sign that is written to hold the school accountable for this.

"Star pretty-boy athlete gets pass in life"

Yeah, that's everyday life in a nutshell. When a group of people decidedly like a particular person, you know that, no matter what atrocities they commit, they are much easier to forgive than they they would be if it was anyone else.

I can just see how that Texan trial went...

Judge: "Son, this here young lady has accused you of a very heavy charge. How do you plead?"
Rapist: "Well, I didn't do it. But I did, um... how did that lawyer guy say it? Allegedly assault her."
Judge: "Hmmm... Well, she said that you full-on raped her, plus the two of your buddies."
Rapist: "Yep. I mean, nope. Look, can we get this over with? I got practice in an hour."
Judge: "Well, as a judge in a court of law, I'm ethically bound to carry out this trial to the full extent of justice... but then that was a mighty fine game you boys played last week. Would be a cryin' shame if you weren't up to your full potential for the semi-finals. Okay! Case dismissed!"
Rapist: "WOOT! I'm awesome because I'm good at sports!"

I wonder if the teachers would still teach if they had been assaulted by students, or if the school officials would still do their jobs if they had been raped by the staff or something. ridiculous. I'm very glad right now that I don't live in the US.

Yes indeed. That school is run by assholes. I don't take it as far as to blame anyone other than the people involved, however. If you haven't noticed, where that used to be cultural norm, now it'ss a horrible thing. These are isolated cases by bigoted beople, not a natural part of society.
