Delete your Facebook. Simple and easy.
Good idea, not so simple. Disabling it is easy (which would work just as well), but actually deleting it is a pain in the ass.
1. Google search.
2. Sign in and hit delete.
3. DON'T DO ANYTHING INVOLVING FACEBOOK FOR 14 DAYS.
4. Done. Your account is gone forever.
But the fact is, you have to Google it. It's not easy to find on Facebook itself.

I think at 16 you're entitled to some privacy, everyone in the world says things that they don't want broadcasted to the whole world (so why they'd ever post anything on facebook, I don't know, but that's for a different thread), I'm sure your mother occasionally says rude things about your behaviour to her friends but you're demanding taped recordings of all her conversations.

In the end, there's got to be a certain level of trust, and unless you've done something recently to alert her, and she has a reason to not want you talking to people without her knowledge, then you need your freedom.

Personally, I'd add her, then make a new facebook account with a whole new random name, and just tell your friends. (obviously don't post any photos).

Or just quit facebook, use your cellphone to stay in touch, or skype, or MSN or one of the other thousand options.

this a delicate situation. I´d add her but keep her in a separate group...that way everyone is happy, i guess

Just add her and clean up your statuses. I have plenty of relatives on my facebook I just cut out the swears.

Honestly, some solid advice is "If you wouldn't tell your mom about it you probably shouldn't be doing it." I dunno if this works in your case but it's solid advice for life.

With all due respect you mother needs help. Talk to her gently and explain the reasons why.

Whoopty-freakin'-doo. It's still piss easy to find.
Yes, with Google. If OP were to try to do that without Google, it wouldn't work so well, but like I said, the far easier to find "disable" works just as well.

my internet
Two things: Do you Pay for the Net? Also, Grammar man >.<

I'm 17 and I co-pay with my sister for the internet (Mum also kindly pays equal amounts despite using barely any.

But as for your mum, MAJOR over-reaction, seriously Facebook seems to be taken waaaay to seriously among people these days, especially, oddly enough, people who don't regularly browse the net (I.E Your Mum, no joke intended).

My answer: get a job, move out, get your own internet.
well i am 16 still going to highschool and would prefer to stay at home were i get 3 meals a day and a roof over my head :p
While this is reasonable, that also means abiding by any rules she wants to set down, including internet usage.

I dont agree with her trying to monitor everything, but by admitting you want to speak freely and you fear punishment if she sees it, you've admitted to saying things that she thinks you shouldn't be. I say, do as other's have said, and add her, but set your updates and what not to hide from her. It wont stop everything, but it's what I do with my family.

Legally though you are her dependent, and it's her internet that she pays for, as well as the house you live in, so from a logical standpoint she can regulate it anyway she wishes.

No, it doesn't. You still get all the little alerts and such that try to suck you back in. Hell, the 14 day waiting period for deletion is designed to pull you back into the trap of Facebook. Hell, if you go to the delete page, they have pictures of your friends saying "_____ will miss you!" to guilt you into not leaving. It's a terrible site that needs to be taken down.
I'm not surprised that it does that, at all. Unfortunately it's a good way to keep in touch with some people...

I hate Facebook with the passion and power of 1 million gamma bursts, so I don't know if this is possible but, couldn't you just add her and like block her or something. As in restrict what she can view?

This. All you need to do is add her and prevent her from seeing any of your stuff. She is also being ridiculous... My mom can't use the computer so I'm happy.

Just add her and ignore what she does on your facebook. You shouldn't be doing anything on your facebook that could get you in trouble with your mom anyway. Every thing on your facebook is public and can bite you in the ass later in life in things like getting a job. There are other more private or anonymous mediums for speaking your mind.
