WE don't have that many anymore.
Are you kidding? Thanks to NATO you'd have:
Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.

In this one, the US isn't alone. N. Korea has been defying the UN pretty much non-stop for the last several years and even China and Russia (N. Korea's best friends) have been backing away from them.

SEOUL, South Korea ? North Korea threatened Wednesday to wipe the United States off the map as Washington and its allies watched for signs the regime will launch a series of missiles in the coming days.

"If the U.S. imperialists start another war, the army and people of Korea will ... wipe out the aggressors on the globe once and for all," the official Korean Central News Agency said.

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Oh, that provided me with a good laugh after a long class session. The very idea that N. Korea could provide even the smallest threat to America is inconcievable. Worst case scenario, they launch, wipe out a good-sized city and then we turn them into glass that can be seen from orbit. They only feel puffed up enough to threaten because they think China has their back, but if they PROVOKE an attack and we retaliate.....I don't honestly think China will do dick except sell Wal-Mart more cheap stuff and rake in our cash.

Kim Jong is a puffed up peacock with an over-inflated sense of his own country's worth and has no credible reason to think that he should start shit with us.

Not to be rude but who is really afraid of Korea I mean that cant even hit a country with a missile the country we should be afraid of is China I mean they army HAS 1 BILLION TROOPS.
Roughly 2.5 million troops actually. China does not have a billion man army. Also China lacks projection power and thus is not a threat to anyone militarily.
Apart from North Korea :D
Indeed, I feel bad for the Chinese at this point they have propped up this government and continued to offer excuses for their stupid behavior but even now they can't excuse the idiocy that Kim Jong Il is promoting. Hell you would think North Korea would rethink its stance when its only two friends in the world Russia and China are telling them to shut up and sit down. Oh well Kim was never the sharpest tool in the shed.

I'd much rather fight against the North Korean army than the war we are currently fighting. Atleast they have uniforms.

But all in all, I'd rather not there be a problem to begin with. I don't like the prospect or idea of war. I'm a pacisfist, after all. But if it came down to it, I'd rather fight uniformed soldiers on a battlefield than roadside bombs and terrorists hiding in the civilian population.

But considering the incrediblely lop-sided odds they would face if they decided to attack anyone, particularly the U.S., I don't think they'd be that stupid.

I predict we'll see N. Korea soon falling into anarchy when Kim Jong dies/is revealed to have died, and there will be a fierce power struggle between all his generals/sons, not to mention the fact that the general population may see it as a chance to rebel and free themselves. We get to sit back and watch interesting news items and offer donations to poor people their ect.

there are anti nuke missles lol.. thats why russian nukes used to contain MULTIPLE warheads to be realised as a salvo so they would increase the chance of landing a hit.

So if NK manages to fly 3 of its best cardboard nukes at america and get past the heat seaking missles waiting for them. Then NK is ftw eh ?

I think that NK will probly set a nuke at the south just because they are bitter that democracy works and communism produces nothing but death and crappy flags.

OK, there will be no shooting war with NK.

Why? A large country called China. They are NK's main backer and also have a mutual defense pact with them. That means an attack on one is an attack on both. We don't want that fight anymore than China does. It would be bad for everyone on planet Earth.

China can't stand back while we invade because that means letting our forces run wild along their southern border. Do you think we want the People's Liberation Army marching through Canada? That would be the same concept.

China can't let a shooting war break out because we'd destroy each other. That would suck after all the advances we've made through diplomacy. They are a major world power and have a lot to lose. A brawl with all of NATO (yes, that includes the UK and Canada) would put a crimp in their current lifestyle.

We won't attack NK because we don't want to fight China and because the first thing that will happen is the obliteration of Seoul and Tokyo. NK can reach them with their weapons.

Despite what some people like to say, the US is still in good standing with most of the civilized world and we'd like it that way.

Honestly, if Kim Jong Il ever got really out of hand, he'd probably get a double dose of lead poisoning from a Chinese adviser before things went too far.

The little runt is just posturing for some more favors. The best thing for now is to work through China and let the situation be dealt with in house.

It's amazing how many people talk in this thread along the lines that wiping out a city (More likely a STATE) Is no big deal what so ever. That the war will be over the moment one of our major cities are wiped out.

One of our cities should not have to be wiped out, but Americans are for all intent and purpose a bunch of spineless make love not war hippies who think any form of war for any reason is bad and will be up in arms about a war even if the state of New York were wiped out in this.

Thank you American citizens. Your stupidity knows no bounds.

Umm, have you been paying attention to American foreign policy? One of the biggest complaints other countries have against us is that WE ARE TOO AGGRESSIVE! Spineless hippies we ain't. And as for the wiping out a city or state part, well that's kind of what we would need as a reason to go pound N. Korea, otherwise people will AGAIN blame us for jumping the gun and invading another country without provocation. It's not that we don't care about losing thousands/millions of people, it's just that we are so damn big that the one or two weapons Korea would send our way isn't really going to crush our nation and instead provide us with the drive to retaliate (For further evidence research American retaliations during the last century).

Crai indeed, but wikipedia isn't so clear about it. What I read (or want to read) is:
In an 6 April 2009 press conference, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is recommending the cancellation of the planned second ABL aircraft and that the program return to a Research and Development effort.
That would still leave the US with 1 functional ABL, and since NK can't spam us with nukes (since they only have a few of them) that'll be enough. If not, we'll still have anti-missile missiles. Whatever's the case, NK is royally fucked when they try to launch some of their Dinkeytoy nukes at the US.

From what i read NK doesn't have the rocket technology to get a nuke to america and even if they did American has the 3 tier defence aegis system and they only country that can get through it is Russia.
I think its south korea and the 28,000 american troops there we have to worry about but they have an aegis destroyer there as well so i don't really think they can do anything with their nukes.

I disagree. I think someone needs to deal with North Korea right now. Not just to protect other countries (even if they drop a bomb that kills 100 innocent people, that's 100 innocent people!), but they're murdering and torturing their own people. Watch this:

Haha, N.Korea's missiles can't even reach mainland America... Even if they could reach they don't have enough to wipe America off the face of the Earth. The furthest they can reach is like Alaska.

N.Korea = Epic fail & troll.

I'm fairly sure this is just North Korea being an attention whore (again). However, if it did come to conflict of some sort, they really don't stand a chance. If they try and attack the US as they've threatened (which will of course fail miserably) there will be either a massive NATO/UN response or, as has been previously mentioned, China will roll in first to prevent that from happening.

I really hope it doesn't come to nukes though, seeing as I'm totally anti-nuke and don't think anyone should possess them.

Yeah, it really is sad what N. Korea is doing to their own citizens, and what is even sadder is that really we have no governmental grounds to halt it. A government can do what it wants to it's own people, that's part of having national sovereignty. We can attempt to place pressures on them to change, but it's kind of like the Prime Directive, no interference with a culture's way of life. All we can do is try and support citizens that attempt to change the country from within as opposed to forcing it from without.

(For further proof look at how we fucked up Iraq)

Well this is more of a frightened opinion piece, than an informative article lacking some more of the smaller bits and pieces that determine the whole story. The most important small piece that everyone keeps overlooking is that it has bee reported these missiles do not have the range to hit the mainland of Alaska (it could hit the islands and though there isn't a large population there i won't approve of sacrificing it). Another piece that is missing is that even though no one realizes it the countries around north Korea (i.e. china, japan, maybe Russia) are allies in a large form or small to the U.S. and they all would frown largely on use of nukes enough to invade leaving them (north Koreans) screwed. One final piece to this article that everyone is forgetting is that this is not a true news source they rely heavily on getting the Yahtzee demographic "undersexed house wives" to fill their pocket book. This group would most certainly click allowing yahoo to benefit from the fear and marketing revenue around that page.
