I've never seen an episode but I've been considering it. The whole 40(50?) years of canon thing has been keeping me out.

New series you say? Will I need to have seen the rest to enjoy it?
If you go back and start at the begging of the reboot it would be easier as that was designed for new audiences most places will have it listed as season 1 of doctor who with this new season being season 6.

HELL YEAH DOCTOR WHO.

Yes, I am a fan. And I do quite like Matt Smith.
But no, I won't be watching. Why?

BECAUSE DOCTOR WHO DOESN'T AIR IN MY COUNTRY GODDAMNIT.
What unfortunate country do you live in? And can you not get BBC iPlayer?
Finland. They aired the first season in... 2006, I think, but I guess it never really caught on here.

And I live under a rock and don't know what that curious iPlayer thing you mentioned is.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/

Basically it's a free to view web player that repeats shows shown on the BBC. Owned by the BBC btw so not illegal or anything :p
However, I don't know if it's country dependant. But give it a shot none the less.
The Iplayer only works in the UK unfortunately. I've tried it in the past when I was visiting my mother in Europe.

OT: I wasn't sure about Matt Smith to begin with, but he's kind of grown on me.

Meanwhile, is anyone aware that the actress that played Sarah Jane Smith died recently?

For some reason I find myself getting more hyped over Torchwood starting this summer. *hears crickets; hides behind flame shield*

And dammit TimeLord, your avatar is just so mesmerizing... @_@
His avatar is mesmerizing?? Did you even look at your own avatar before you picked it? I sat there for two whole minutes before I ever realised you had a post.

I don't think you will miss to much by starting with this series. But ideally you should start with 2005 series 1 to get your bearings.
6pm? Dammit, I'm still at work then. It's alright, I'll still watch it tonight, it's just that I was hoping to watch it live on BBC1 via internet (I don't have a TV license this year since I only ever watch catchup TV, which you don't need a license for, but I was going to make an exception for Doctor Who). But I finish work at 6.30pm instead. Ah well, I'll see it on iPlayer tonight anyway, just expect me to be a bit late to all the inevitable new series threads that pop up :p.

Do I like Dr. Who? Why, yes, yes I do.

How's Matt Smith doing so far in your eyes? I think he's doing brilliantly. He's got a charm about him, just like Tennant had before him.

Will you be watching at 6pm this evening? (GMT) Too bloody right I will be. Got my TV set up to switch to BBC 1 when the show starts. :)

Although The Sun is trying its bloody hardest to spoil the entire show before I've seen it. >>

I think they needed matt to be a bit more light and "happy" doctor this season, because David Tenant's doctor became very, well not dark, but morose and serious, what with all the loss piling up on him. Not that I'm slagging Tannant's preformance, legendary that was.

During the last episode, when he tells young amy their story, I think he did old soul doctor very well, and I think he can continue to do that very well.

Mainly I'm just excited to see this silence plot thing and how it'll develop. Damn promo pic had me in permanent fright mode for like a week when it came out xD.

Moffat isn't a new writer. He has written episodes such as The Empty Child in Season 1 which has to be my favourite storyline of the reboot by far. To be honest, I found the writing took a dip after season 1 and RTD getting the cast chased by yet another random alien got a bit tiresome.
An excellent summary of the reboot.

It may be sacrilege, but so far I actually prefer Matt Smith to David Tennant...

But then again I prefer Peter Davison to Tom Baker, so my judgement may be questionable :$ And yes, I shall be watching, but on iPlayer the moment it's up, cos as a poor student I have no TV. :(

[EDIT]

And it's not Series 6 btw; it is Season 32 ;)

According to Steven Moffat (about the last season):

"It?s Series Thirty-One of Doctor Who, and it's Series One of Matt Smith's Doctor, Those are both real numbers. I submit that 'Series Five of Doctor Who' means absolutely nothing unless you really believe that Matt Smith is the third Doctor. Everyone knows he's the Eleventh Doctor so that means it?s definitely not 'Series Five'. Whichever number you choose, 'Series Five' is the one that's flawed."

"'Series One' is an exciting sentence. 'Series Thirty-One' is an awe-inspiring sentence. 'Series Five' is a boring sentence - and also a complete lie."

Doctor Who doesn't tend to be as strict with cannon as comic books do for example so you really don't need to know as much.
Let's be fair, a lot of the cannon-breaking occurred in RTD's stuff, and Moffat even breaks his own cannon. The old writers stuck to the cannon a lot better.
Huh, I didn't know that. Thank's for the info :) (sincerely)

I LOVE DOCTOR WHO!

Big fan of Doctor Who, my first Doctor was Ecclestone but I've been discovering the 'Doctor Who Classic' episodes. I've seen all Doctors in action apart from 1,2 and 8.
I will be watching the episode tonight.

Matt Smith is as good a Doctor as every actor who has played the role. The point of the Doctor is to be different every time. Matt Smith is equal to William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, John Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christopher Ecclestone and David Tennant. None are a better Doctor than another actor who played him.

Hartnell and Troughton established the series and Pertwee guided it through the penniless times with great ability. Tom Baker and Davison kept the golden age of Doctor Who going through great stories and brilliant episodes. Though I do think the series was in decline when Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy were playing the Doctor. The writers had run low on inspiration and they were treated badly by the writing team and therefore the BBC as the series lost viewers. The movie (McGann) made the bridge between the Classics and the new series. Ecclestone restarted Doctor Who as a Doctor scarred by the time war but managed to rediscover his life and joy at the end of the series, then regenerating into Tennant provided a renaissance that brought viewing numbers and popularity beyond the golden age of Tom Baker.

Now Matt Smith has to keep Doctor Who on the path to more success. Tennant left a long shadow that I think he has avoided.

Do I like Doctor Who? Sure I do! But...somehow I can't bring myself to care about the new series. I don't know why, but I also couldn't really be bothered to watch the Christmas special. It's not Smith, because I love his Doctor. It's not the writers either, I really have no idea.

TimeLord, if there's anyone who can make me care again, it's you, so make me!
Watch it or the Weeping Angels standing behind you will have something to say about it!

It was an unfortunate casualty of the avatar size limits when they were imposed. Re-uploading it is impossible because it's 660k and the limit it 100/200k

Huh, even in Canada I get to watch it tonight.

I'm watching a Doctor Who marathon on Space Channel, which is showing the entire 5th series and ends with the premier.

Good thing I'm not doing anything tonight.

I have on the most part enjoyed the reboot, and I think Matt Smith has been doing a good job so far. Having said that, series 5 of the reboot was my least favourite because I thought that the writing was pretty weak. I like Moffat when he writes scary episodes, but I'm not confident about him replacing RTD (who got worse towards the end of his tenure, but I still like those series more than Moffat's effort so far).

I'll be watching this evening to see how the series is shaping up, but I'll have to post my thoughts tomorrow.
