I'll second that. Griffins are cool. Same with Kraken, but not as much.

Thesis: Vampires were not ruined because of one series. Summary at the end.

Mythological refers to creatures from stories. Much like how Cryptological refers to mysteries, and biological refers to organic, cellular, proven life. Cthulhu counts, even if he's not scary. How bad can he be?

In regards to this entire thread; Stephanie Meyer and young girls do not have the power to ruin or destroy anything. Vampires have slowly changed from the mindless bloodthirsty animated corpses they began as to (often) bisexual chess players who spend large efforts seducing and drinking from one particular person. This is a gradual evolution, a large turning point of which would have been Elizabeth Bathory, a woman who took virgins from the nearby village and bathed in their blood along with her lesbian lovers. This was credited as inspiration for Camilla, one of the oldest well-known vampire stories where the creatures in question are not mindless.

Camilla was also counted as an inspiration for Bram Stoker's Dracula. And according to a version of the book I have, so was a dream in which the author dreamt the scene where the count pulls the young man away from the coven of female vampires and says "He is mine!"

Summary (aka TL;DR): Sentient vampires have bisexual tendencies, original vampires were solo zombie hordes.
Double post :p And did you just -dare- to call the Dread Cthulhu -not- scary. No no...I can see it is only the madness he has instilled within' you for his own inscrutable purpose. Be blessed that Great Lord Cthulhu has visited such a madness upon you!

In other news, I agree with you about the vampires...as much as I dislike Twilight and it's ill gotten ilk, and, even some of the god-awful works works that preceded, Ann Rice comes to mind (some of her books anyhow). But, really, their fanship doesn't prevent me from enjoying the classic Vampire stories, nor should it taint the idea of what makes a good vampire to oneself.

Im a fan of werewolves personally. I have to give it to New Moon though. The trailer shows an awesome transformation from dude, to werewolf (where Jacob explodes into a wolf), so I cant bash that movie nearly as much as Twilight.

Ninjas.

So rare one has never been seen...
Not mythological per-se. They did actually exist. They apparently were prominent during the Edo period in Japan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ninja

they're basically the same, the difference is that a mythological creature was, at one point in time, believed to be a creature that actually existed, and that some people actually are convinced still exist (cryptozoologists are a big example of this)
Does that discount globsters as they have been confirmed as false?

I vote for Dragons, Wyverns, Drakes, and all related kin to the giant flying fire-breathing reptiles.

griffon or chimera (greek or japanese) or any mythical creature from japan (not the oni cause its sorta like a western demon which are all ready mainstream but something like a tangu (sorta a japanese harpie but more bird like) or an animal demon or cross bred or any other of the japanese demons cause theyre unique and even in anime hardly mainstream (only one i can think of thats got japaneses demons mainstream is inuyasha though there are probly others that was the one that focused mainly/the most on their demons)

yah pretty much im impressed at how much you did your homework so little people actually know the truth. they actually started in romania (and neighboring countries as mindless zombies that fed on animal blood to the english/stokers tall pale noble homo(ish) dracula vampires that most are accustomed with. to the gay a$$ retarded "vegetarian" (have no clue how thats possible) twilight version sorry they de-evolved to the twilight version.

but either way twilight didn't "ruin" vampires as much as it makes fun of them
so once we get over the twilight faze i think vampire will recover

Chupa-thingy, has a nice ring to it.
Or Nessie! Though if you wanna be a killjoy, visible signs indicate she is a dinosaur, I forget which type.

Or how about, people that use common sense?
