Griffins are cool.

Although InvisibleSeal's idea of doppelgangers is also pretty cool. I like that idea...
I support doppelgangers!

Banshees...my worst fear but one of the coolest spirits
Oh man...I'm not spiritual by any means, and I'm generally the sort who thinks that natural phenomena should only be explained by natural means.....but, as an Irishwoman, I can honestly and unashamedly say that banshees scare the everliving buhjeebus out of me. Seriously, yikes.

I will not get behind that. I will stay far, far away from that.

Personally, I'm concerned with the choice of words used in this thread's title; "Getting behind" a mythological creature, eh? End result: A unicorn with a sore anus.

Dragons will always be the greatest mythical creatures, even if someone did write a crappy romance series with sparkly bishonen dragons. You simply can't beat them.

How about we just conspire to forever alter the lore of vampires to make them totally helpless against all other mythical creatures. No godmoding=not as interesting=no glamour. Force them to move off of our turf and back to pony alley. Yay, pony alley!

I like griffins: they weren't ruined by Harry Potter I don't think. I think everyone knows what they are, but for the people who don't, they are half lion half eagle (eagle's head and talons, lions hindquarters).

They just look so awesome, but I'm not really sure which mythology they are from.
Then again, I'm not sure if I can say "I like griffins" since they aren't technically real...
EDIT: Plus they aren't really mainstream like dragons etc.

EDIT again:

I suggest "Ghouls". for those of you who don't know much about ghouls, they are basicly intelligent zombies that gain the memories and appearance of any creature they consume (at least in some versions). Any thoughts on that?
Probably the best kind of mythological creature to "get behind" or something would be something that would specifically target humans I suppose. So ghouls, from your suggestion, are a good idea. Also, what about doppelgangers (they copy the voices and semblance of a person and then target new people).

Vampires are only as successful as they are maybe just because they seem to be specifically malicious towards humans, and are stealthy. I suppose this should be the kind of thought process people go through when thunking of game enemies or whatever.

Wow, really long post - sorry!
actually i dont think harry potter has griffins in it... those are hypogriffs half horse half eagle/hawk...
griffins are FUCKING awesome. chronicles of narnia did them a great deal of justice. bamf. seriously.

The Kitsune..a good example of a creature that could do with some more mainstream exposure.

Personally though, i just judge the twilight series as totally non-canon to any vampiric lore whatsoever. Besides, we all know Hellsing is not only WAY better, but has the one TRUE vampire: Alucard (read his name backwards)

Myself and many others feel the "Twilight" and similar series have ruined vampires for the masses and turned them into some sort of joke. So any suggestions for a new mythological creature to support in hopes of it becoming more mainstream and filling our newfound void? I suggest "Ghouls". for those of you who don't know much about ghouls, they are basicly intelligent zombies that gain the memories and appearance of any creature they consume (at least in some versions). No more goddamn zombies. I still can't understand the draw. I've been trying to get it.
Anyways, on topic for real, I'll have to agree with were-creatures (except hippopotami), if they somehow find a way to puss those up ... damnit. Furries already did that.
Hrm ... wait. Why do we need any sort of fantasy creature? There is more darkness in the human soul than in most creatures.
