Ok, that's fair enough. If they offend you then that's it.

Can i just say that Garchomp #445 was NOT in Gen 1!!!!! and out of fan fic pics Charizard #6 had never had Black inside wings and gold rings around his body.

Seriously is the first post trolling as he says he is a fan of pokemon he should know atleast what pokemon were and werenot in the 1st Generation of Pokemon

I'll bite. The point is that they took a Gen IV Pokemon (Garchomp) and applied Gen I design principles to it, vs. they took a Gen I Pokemon (Charizard) and applied Gen IV design principles to it.

Also, Darmanitan.

Some problems with newer generations of pokemon;

1) Their names seem to be too lame. You don't see many "Pikachu" type names. More "Mankey" kinds that are too obvious. I think I'd much rather the japanese sounding names where I don't know exactly what it's supposed to be.

2) I don't know which ones are 'good' and the ones that look cool are generally weak (imo).

3) Change is scary.

What if we switch Pikachu and Trubbish? Trubbish gets introduced in Gen 1, and stars in the Anime, and Pikachu comes in Gen 5. Which one would be iconic then?
I just said that in post 125. Pikachu because of his design will always stick out more. The rats the perfect kids choice.

Why do you continue to quote me when you've already called me ignorant from nostalgia? Do you actually take interest in my opinion or are just trying your best to derail me?
I just keep trying to point out your nostalgia-blindness. You keep failing to recognize it. Oh well.
Do you really think nintendo would pick a bag full of shit as their franchise mascot?
I mean that would be awesome but they'd probably pick something more marketable.

You have to realize that the games came before the manga or television series, as both of the latter were used in Advertisement of the games, along with the TCG series.

They had vastly limited spriting capabilities back then, so it makes sense that as handhelds have progressively become more powerful they are able to make more complex designs.

Pokemon with extra little detailed colors wouldn't have worked on the GB or GBC, and would have had plenty of shading and coloration removed. Also, sprites had smaller dimensions, and had to be squeezed to fit within that space. Nowadays they are about twice as large as they were before.

Just look at Gyarados here:

Blue Version, severely limited to only two colors.

Black/White, far more detailed with added coloration and shading.

They've even gotten to the point where the sprites can now constantly move in battle. If you tried doing something like that on the original Gameboy, I'm quite sure it would spontaneously combust or some other hyperbolic statement.

Pokemon from generation one had to be designed with the initial power of the GB in mind. The designs for Pokemon in generation One are the most basic because they had to be, the Gameboy couldn't pull off a rainbow-colored serpent or anything like that.

This is why you can see that with every new generation, they become more detailed, because they have more to work with.

I feel like it's worth mentioning that Pikachu wasn't intended to be the total franchise mascot originally. He was going to share that duty with Clefairy.

Meh, I saw mascot somewhere, and felt like bringing that up.

OH GOD, A POKEMON THREAD ABOUT WHICH GEN HAS BETTER DESIGN. FUUUUUUUUUUUUU -

Ok, should probably attempt to answer this thing seriously - and, well... I disagree. Yes, the modern pokemon are 'louder' in design, but that doesn't necessarily make them 'bad-looking'. Hell, I prefer the more complicated design over some of the simpler designs of the early generations - pokemon like Palkia, Golurk, Braviary, Groudon and Zekrom all look (again, in my opinion) much better than anything from Gen 1 and 2. The Complicated design also works in favor for many of the legendaries - Palkia, Dialga, Zekrom, etc. all covey a sense of power with their designs, while Gen 1/2 legendaries (Zapdos, Suicine, Raikou, etc.) don't give that same sense or power or legendary status due to their simpler design.

And yes, every generation has it's stupid designs - despite my love for muk, it looks kinda retarded and there is little positive feedback to give Mr.Mime. Dunsparce is silly, Glalie looks awful, Chingling is stupid (and rather useless) and Garbodor can die in a hole.

But I have to ask - why all the hate for this little guy?

Mother-fucker looks down right tasty. Plus after Voltorb and Electrode, I don't think we have the right to complain about an Ice Cream pokemon hanging around.
Can I complain because he doesn't come in chocolate?

You know what? You are terrible at arguing. You don't prove a point, you just insult people you disagree with, and you're a coward.

Either learn to talk properly or piss off.

You wanna know why Generation 1 was the best?

It's because every single new game is a remake (I don't mean like Fire Red, I mean like every pokemon game is structurally built around the exact same thing) in the worst ways possible. If they just changed a few key plot elements instead of just recreating the same damn story every time it'd be awesome now.

Look at Final Fantasy. Sure the games are mechanically the same, but the path you take is different and exciting. Nothing about Pokemon has been anywhere near as exciting as the first time around, and I ASSURE YOU that the MAJORITY of people like the first Pokemon game they played better than any other one.

As for you... yes you, the one guy who is going to say "I've been playing since R/B/Y and I like Bla/W the best!"... Shut your freaking mouth...

You are in the minority.

There is NOTHING exciting about a new pokemon game. AT ALL. You know before you open the box EXACTLY what is going to happen and it sucks. It's just going to be an INSANELY over polished version of Pokemon red and blue with very nearly the same overarching plot (even down to the factions involved) and an assload of unnecessary new Pokemon like

ICE CREAM CONE-MON
and
GEARS-MON
and soon
RANDOM APPLIANCE-MON (or is there already a TV one... I don't remember, none of the new Pokemon have any lasting appeal either way)

and there are SO many new Pokemon that you don't even want to catch them all anymore, you just wanna play a good amount of the game until you get bored and put it away for 2 years so you can pick it up again and play for one more month before never playing it again.

And let's not forget all the new features that don't add anything.

#X vs #X battles! (OMG THIS CHANGES EVERTHING)
Haircuts!
Fashion Shows!
...
fucking
POKEMON HAPPINESS!!!!!!111!

... but I digress.

There's a few good new features... like online play... and... um... online play.

So yeah, the new Pokemon are different, but it's the fact that there is no longer any appeal to the games or the story, and that makes it so that the Pokemon have no chance of being iconic what-so-ever.

...

TLDR; I don't care how many dimensions you were in when Emerald caught Girarceus in the Dream Land... it will NEVER... FCUKING NEVER... compare to when Red caught Mewtwo in Cerulean Cave.

In the original post I was talking about how their design shifted, and how I found an image which finally 'hit the nail on the head' in terms of demonstrating how the design style has shifted(and thus made me realise what it was that felt different about new pokemon). They're not just using different animals or whatever, they use different design elements when creating them, more complexity.

Thus the 'gen 1' style garchomp and the 'gen 5' style charizard. (Also a good image cause it doesn't seem biased, it's doing both sides justice while demonstrating how the design philosophy has shifted)

Oh jeez. If you can't handle other opinions then you probably should spend your time somewhere else. This rant doesn't do any thing except make you look childish.

Think about it, what does ranting about how everyone is wrong on the internet going to do? Not change any ones mind I can tell you that.

You forgot about the new over-designed legendary pokemon everyone's supposed to get excited over, even though they're banned from any competitive battle that matters because they're overpowered.

That post nails the problems I have with Pokemon today. I still think there's a lot of promise in Pokemon to do something new and exciting, since it's essentially a multiplayer RPG with theoretically near limitless combinations. But I really don't give a shit about saving whatever island the new game takes place on, I don't care about Team "Not Rocket" or the Elite Four, and I especially don't care about whatever the new dress-up game is.

Gold and Silver added a bunch of new pokemon, items, color graphics, a huge world with even more content once you beat the Elite Four, and an internal clock that made catching Pokemon fun and dynamic. Not a game-changer, but a clear upgrade. The last few games have added maybe ONE feature that gamers over 8 care about, like the Battle centers or online play. Other than that, it's just the skeleton of R/B with a bunch of pretty ornaments.

I wonder, if the designs had gone backwards, the more complex ones we have now to the simpler ones of the past, would we complain that they were getting lazy? Not that I personally care, there are some that I love, some that I like, some that I don't care about, some that I dislike, and some that I hate in every single version of Pokemon, and you know what? I don't care one bit, because at the end of the day I still love the games, and I can get over a poor design, and just pay more attention to the ones I like

My personal favorite?

IT'S SO FUCKING DERPY AND ADORABLE!
Also I like how, yea, if it uses body slam it pretty much makes craters
