Haha, your Converge comment made me laugh. HORSE's older material is difficult because of the unpolished sound and pretty crappy vocals. I mean, I like it, but I know why others wouldn't. As for A Natural Death and Desperate Living, these two albums show the maturity of HORSE and actually have some incredibly philosophical themes running throughout. I love the challenge that their music gives me, and they're also one of the hardest touring bands ever...although every bands tends to say that about themselves so take that with a pinch of salt.AnarchistFish said:

Cool wistful guitar work by a man holding on by his finger nails, recorded over two late night sessions you can really feel the insomnia which gave birth to the haunting and ethereal album about a journey through night. Its vaguely Keatsian so if you like Romantic era poetry Pink Moon will strike a chord with you.
But if you're set on heavier stuff(some of which is punk)

Ayreon is the name Arjen Lucassen gives to his rock operas (usually double albums, and therefore all concept albums). Sort of hard to pick out one song to highlight this, but here goes.
Opeth are very much prog. Their albums tend to vary a bit in overall style, but I can honestly say I feel that all of them are worth listening to.
Primordial is celtic black metal, with the occassional proggy element.
And last but not least... Mirrorthrone. I'm uncertain how to classify, but I love it.

Also, I'll second/third the Dream Theater suggestions. Start with "Metropolis pt 2: Scenes from a Memory" and then go from there however you like. My other recommendation would be Porcupine Tree. Try their albums "Deadwing" or "Fear of a Blank Planet".
Animals as Leaders (self titled first album) = insanely awesome prog/metal/djent- stuff. They're supporting a BTBAM show near me soon too

Breaking Benjamin's album called Phobia is pretty great and if you like it you would probably like their others. That's their best album to me though.
Also, A Thousand Suns by Linkin Park is great too. It is an extremely diverse album and I think you need to listen to it as a whole to realize how complete the album is.
Edit: Also, if you like rap even a little bit you MUST listen to Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. It has a lot of great instrumental stuff mixed into it and I can honestly say that I love every single song on it.
