On the PC look up Painkiller. Its a slightly older game but the graphics are still good. there is no real story its just grab guns and blow up everything you run into but its a great fun time doing so.

The Orange Box on the PC is an obvious one. I'd also go with Half-Life 1, Far Cry, Deus Ex, and Doom 3 (especially Deus Ex if you want a good story, even though it's an RPG/FPS).

It depends. Mass Effect has a killer story and is a nice FPS/RPG hybrid; but play the first one before the second, you'll thank me for it.

If you like a modern setting with a large multiplayer component, along with customizing your play style, I'd suggest Modern Warfare 2 (as much as I hate it personally, it is a good game for some people).

If you like a spacier setting with more rigid playing with lots of game types and maps, Halo is your deal for sure. It also has very good multiplayer support, but I'd grab ODST if you plan on doing online much, it comes with all the maps.

Finally, the sequel to Bioshock is slightly lacking in the campaign, but if you enjoyed the first game and like multiplayer, it has an addicting (if laggy) multiplayer component as well.

EDIT: Also, what the guy above me said. HL2 is good story-wise and if you get it on PC you're in mod city baby!
mass effect 3rdfs(3rd person shooter)

anywhoo i reccomned half life 2

Prey.

You play as an Indian who's been abducted by aliens along with his grandfather and girlfriend. You get free, and have to find and save them, while stopping the alien invasion.

The game is really cool, because it plays with gravity a lot, allowing you to walk on walls and ceilings, which really changes up the combat. It's also a good game for those who are new to the genre, because you can't really die. When you die you go on a "spirit journey" where pretty much you enter the afterlife, do some shooting, and then you come back to right where you were before.
I love that game.

Also, the game is awesome crazy all the way though.

Anything from Valve is a safe bet

if you want more action less story might I mention Serious Sam or Painkiller (NOT Overdose or Resurrection!!)

You can Find Serious Sam HD on steam for about 15 Euroes if my memory serves me correct and Painkiller Black Edition for 10 Euroes

Half Life 2. I rest my case.
Yes, yes and YES!
Call of Duty 4 and Modern Warfare 2 has got some good (Although a bit short) single player modes. The online modes are fun even if you're rubbish at it too, if you decide to try online play :D

Eh. I would edge away from recommending Half Life 2 as a first FPS. The Gravity Gun, though awesome, differ from most FPS mechanics too much. Something like TF2 or COD would be a better choice.

Could you possibly elaborate as to why half life 2 isn't a good first FPS? I'm not sure what makes something a "good" or "bad" first FPS, so I'd like to know what to look for when considering what to purchase.

From what everyone has said here, is sounds like CoD 4 should definitely be on my list. As for the others, I'm going to have to scavenge my friend's collections and see if I can give these a try before purchasing any of them (unless I can find any that are extremely inexpensive). I am poor.

I appreciate everyone's input. Thanks!

Worked with 2 IRL friends of mine. They were reluctant to give it a go, as neither was really into FPSs, but (finally) a few weeks ago they got down to it. Now they're fans, and already waiting for Episode 3 like the rest of us. I don't think they warmed up to the entire "FPS" gameplay though, just to VALVe overall =P (more drones for our mighty army).

Let's start you off with some of the basic ones.
Half Life I & II
Serious Sam I & II
Doom I & II

There you go.

Well, about halfway through the game or so you get a gun that lets you do things with the gravity engine, and it's used in a lot of the things you'll be doing from then on in the game, though nothing that complicated. If you buy the Orange Box, it includes half life 2, its two expansions, Portal and Team Fortress, all for 30 dollars. You may recognize these names from several posts in this thread. Personally, I thought Half Life and its sequal were filled the brim on "make your way through winding, kinda boring locales or hallways/sewers so you can do a bunch of peoples busy work", I couldn't force myself to keep playing about half way through the first episode. HOWEVER, as I'm sure most would agree, the 30 dollar price tag is worth it for Portal alone, and all of the thousands of mods for half life 2 (very easy to install, and there are a LOT of good ones).

Or you could not be like me and think Half Life 2 is genius, and it's an even better value.

Steam has a lot of game demos available, keep that in mind.

And to throw my own in the mix:

If you loved Bioshock, go for System Shock 2. It's an older pc game (around 2001 I think), but it and its big brother Deus Ex pretty much set the gold standard for fps games with rpg elements, a standard which in my opinion has yet to be broken by its offspring.

edit: Also, Deus Ex 2 is great (SHUT UP FANBOYS IT IS) as well.

Don't get me wrong. Half Life 2 was an excellent game and I enjoyed it greatly (as can be seen in on my [link = "http://steamcommunity.com/id/thexenocide/stats/HL2:EP2"]Steam account[/link]), bu the gravity gun's importance breaks from the rules of FPS's a bit too much to create a general impression of FPS gameplay. I usually find myself using the gravity gun as a shield/weapon half the time, and no other FPS really uses the same mechanic. It might give you the wrong idea of how most FPS's play.

It wasn't mentioned on the first page, but I'm throwing them out there.

TimeSplitters 2
TimeSplitters(3) Future Perfect

They are for the PS2. Difficulties, MANY different arcade style challenges, and the multiplayer has bots, which can even lead to some interesting "alone" multiplayer experiences.

I will say though, the story isn't the most in-depth. Starting with BioShock and then trying to find other games with similarly amazing storylines is going to be difficult. Definitely give them a try, though.

And Prey is highly recommended as well. I consider it one of the most underrated games from this "generation".
