mass effect 3rdfs(3rd person shooter)Magic Hobo said:It depends. Mass Effect has a killer story and is a nice FPS/RPG hybrid; but play the first one before the second, you'll thank me for it.
If you like a modern setting with a large multiplayer component, along with customizing your play style, I'd suggest Modern Warfare 2 (as much as I hate it personally, it is a good game for some people).
If you like a spacier setting with more rigid playing with lots of game types and maps, Halo is your deal for sure. It also has very good multiplayer support, but I'd grab ODST if you plan on doing online much, it comes with all the maps.
Finally, the sequel to Bioshock is slightly lacking in the campaign, but if you enjoyed the first game and like multiplayer, it has an addicting (if laggy) multiplayer component as well.
EDIT: Also, what the guy above me said. HL2 is good story-wise and if you get it on PC you're in mod city baby!
I love that game.AjimboB said:Prey.
You play as an Indian who's been abducted by aliens along with his grandfather and girlfriend. You get free, and have to find and save them, while stopping the alien invasion.
The game is really cool, because it plays with gravity a lot, allowing you to walk on walls and ceilings, which really changes up the combat. It's also a good game for those who are new to the genre, because you can't really die. When you die you go on a "spirit journey" where pretty much you enter the afterlife, do some shooting, and then you come back to right where you were before.
Edited my stupidity, thanks for pointing that out.NAHTZEE said:mass effect 3rdfs(3rd person shooter)Magic Hobo said:It depends. Mass Effect has a killer story and is a nice FPS/RPG hybrid; but play the first one before the second, you'll thank me for it.

Yes, yes and YES!Rauten said:Half Life 2. I rest my case.
Eh. I would edge away from recommending Half Life 2 as a first FPS. The Gravity Gun, though awesome, differ from most FPS mechanics too much. Something like TF2 or COD would be a better choice.Rauten said:Half Life 2. I rest my case.
Could you possibly elaborate as to why half life 2 isn't a good first FPS? I'm not sure what makes something a "good" or "bad" first FPS, so I'd like to know what to look for when considering what to purchase.ender214 said:Eh. Worked with 2 IRL friends of mine. They were reluctant to give it a go, as neither was really into FPSs, but (finally) a few weeks ago they got down to it. Now they're fans, and already waiting for Episode 3 like the rest of us. I don't think they warmed up to the entire "FPS" gameplay though, just to VALVe overall =P (more drones for our mighty army).ender214 said:Eh. Well, about halfway through the game or so you get a gun that lets you do things with the gravity engine, and it's used in a lot of the things you'll be doing from then on in the game, though nothing that complicated. If you buy the Orange Box, it includes half life 2, its two expansions, Portal and Team Fortress, all for 30 dollars. You may recognize these names from several posts in this thread. Personally, I thought Half Life and its sequal were filled the brim on "make your way through winding, kinda boring locales or hallways/sewers so you can do a bunch of peoples busy work", I couldn't force myself to keep playing about half way through the first episode. HOWEVER, as I'm sure most would agree, the 30 dollar price tag is worth it for Portal alone, and all of the thousands of mods for half life 2 (very easy to install, and there are a LOT of good ones).baiaishan said:Could you possibly elaborate as to why half life 2 isn't a good first FPS? Steam has a lot of game demos available, keep that in mind.see if I can give these a try before purchasing any of them (unless I can find any that are extremely inexpensive). I am poor.
I appreciate everyone's input. Thanks!
Don't get me wrong. Half Life 2 was an excellent game and I enjoyed it greatly (as can be seen in on my [link = "http://steamcommunity.com/id/thexenocide/stats/HL2:EP2"]Steam account[/link]), bu the gravity gun's importance breaks from the rules of FPS's a bit too much to create a general impression of FPS gameplay. I usually find myself using the gravity gun as a shield/weapon half the time, and no other FPS really uses the same mechanic. It might give you the wrong idea of how most FPS's play.baiaishan said:Could you possibly elaborate as to why half life 2 isn't a good first FPS? From what everyone has said here, is sounds like CoD 4 should definitely be on my list. As for the others, I'm going to have to scavenge my friend's collections and see if I can give these a try before purchasing any of them (unless I can find any that are extremely inexpensive). I am poor.
