Australia, lived here for a year on a working holiday, and everyone I meet or talk to, is just nice polite and funny.

I feel perfectly safe walking down King's Cross in Sydney at 2am!

Italy. Nuff said.
On the the only 2 occasions I've been to Italy, everyone seemed really friendly and happy. Well, everone who I came into contact with did anyway. Apart from this one yob who yelled at us, but he was probably just bitter that he'd lived his whole life up in a small town in the hills. One waiter in Rome was so cheerful he even ruffled my dads (thinning) hair and joked with us :D

So yeah, I agree. But then I'm used to grumpy Welshmen, snooty Southerners and general British-ness, so whenever I go abroad the natives seem nice...

But for friendly countries, I say Canada. My dad said Denmark was very friendly too.
Have you been to Japan?

Probably Switserland or something like that. Not England or the U.S. though, definatly.
England=/=UK.

I'd say Sweden or the Netherlands. Barely ever spoken to anyone from those two places that I could call even remotely asshole-y.

I spent a little time in Germany, and found it to be wonderful. The people were cool, the food was good, and the beer was freakin' amazing (and cheap). Also, I like the USA. Granted, it's kind of a crazy place but when did that become a crime? Americans are generally really nice people, in my experience.

@ AC10 --> Servers in the U.S. always make less than minimum wage; their employer is only required to pay them enough to make their pay + tips equal to minimum wage. Not counting tips, they usually make around $3 U.S. an hour. Of course, I work in a tourist town [Branson, MO], and the majority of my server friends work as bartenders, so they tend to make a bit more than your run-of-the-mill server.

I'm gonna vote Canada, though. A buddy of mine spent a summer up there just playing guitar on the street with no other income, and he stayed in a nice hotel every night. Sure, he was broke the next morning, but Canadians are apparently really nice to street performers, and he'd usually have enough money for the next night by mid-afternoon. I think he was in Toronto. Anyway, that's my unsolicited opinion for ya.

As has been said: Antarctica. The people there are happy to meet new people as long as you're willing to put in some work.
people live in antarctica?
It has a very low permanent population, since 99% of the people who live there are in the military bases, doing radar tests and whatnot. If you can cook well, you'll be the most popular person in the entire base in no time.

Take a holiday in Ireland guys, we are famed for our hospitality!

[small]P.S. it's totally NOT because we mercilessly exploit Americans with our tourist trade... I swear...[/small]
Coming from probably the only town in Ireland where the only shops are geared towards tourists, where most houses are B&Bs, there are more holiday homes then normal houses, and has 6 pubs per street (though only two streets), I must admit, this is true.

Though for the last few years, the whole place has stangely been filled with Italians. I miss the big ol' Yanks with their hilarious accents, I really do.
I know... there's something comforting about going down to West Cork and Kerry and seeing the coaches full of portly 40 something yankees smiling and waving out the windows...

Yes, actually. The place is nice, but I wouldn't give the [majority of the] people any awards.

Japan is a bit two sided. Some groups hold Westerners in contempt, they have a title for outsider and you are referred to as that. Others are the nicest most generous people you will ever meet.

I met most of the former, though I did meet some absolutely fantastic people who made me feel warm and fuzzy inside (not in a creepy way). No country is all the way bad.

Canada!
Or maybe Jamaica.
Canada is nice...except when they tip. They're notoriously cheap.
I'm Canadian and I always tip the accepted 15%
15% is a breakfast and/or lunch tip. If you receive good service for dinner, you should be tipping 18-20%. In the US, servers make between 2.13 to 3.50 on hour depending on the state and genre of restaurant so every little bit counts.

Topic wise-I have found Canadians to be very polite and pleasant despite being cheap. The Welsh are also wonderful. Last but not least, people from Iceland are lovely too, but you don't run into them often. I have been a server for over 13years and have met a great number of tourists.

And no country is all the way good. It's true a lot of Japanese people have a similar attitude that Americans have about people that live in America that don't speak English. Most Japanese people know enough English but they like to lie that they don't. Also some Japanese people don't like when you use their language incorrectly. But I studied there for a year and met some really cool people. But I guess in the college setting you get to meet other students interested in meeting foriegners, espcially when most of the classes were taught in English. At first I got teased because I didn't speak Japanese too well and my accent was weird but the friends that I made helped me to correct that. But the best was the family that I stayed with. They were really amazing and they made me feel as if I were there own. Nothing like being the first one to take a bath! They gave me many wonerful insights into Japanese culture that will be very useful when I have to write my thesis in a year.
