Can anybody tell me, is marilyn Manson in any way like nin? I know Trent and Manson used to be friends and stuff but music wise I don't know.

The short answer is...sorta.

They were friends, and they fell out while they were both indulging in quite a bit of drugs (find interviews of Reznor during the mid-late 90's for amusement). They've made up a couple of times and I don't know if they still associate, but they haven't done anything musical together in a while. Reznor produced some of Manson's earlier work.

If (early) NIN is a whole bunch of hate and self-loathing, then most of Manson's stuff gives me the impression that he just wants to show off how fucked up he can be. Other than "Disposable Teens" I don't remember Manson ever writing a song that was truly about something. 'God is in the TV' is a trite cliche he trotted out over and over in his song on The Matrix Soundtrack. Still, every once in a while he comes out with a song that just jams. There's a burner of a track on Smells Like Children (Youtube is failing me at the moment) that starts with a small child saying something about "Motherfuckers with guitar metal" that absolutely rocks.

THX 1138, is that that movie by.... Who was it by again? George Lucas? Yeah that was quite artistic of him. And one of his songs has a sound clip of porn but I can't remember which one. In the fragile one of his songs ends with a short clip of kiss or something too.

It was Lucas, yes. One of his better films, in my opinion and very artistic indeed :3

Oh and the song with the sounds of a woman having an orgasm is on Big Man With a Gun. Just put with a shiteload of distortion. Wouldn't have even guessed that's what it was when I first heard it

STARFUCKERS, INC. ends with a sample of Gene Simmons screaming something live. Something to the effect of "Wwwweeeeeree Kissssss GooooodNNNNighttttt!"

Yeah they're not talking, haven't since they performed together in 2000. I think it was because Reznor disaproved of Manson going back on drugs or something.

I'll check out those songs, are they all just screaming bullshit though? Don't get me wrong, I love a good shouting if it's accompanied by good music (think mr self destruct, heresy) but if it's not good then no thank you.

Calling NIN pop-industrial is just like calling Rancid pop-punk or claiming that Bad Brains and the Dead Kennedys weren't really punk because they had original sounds and merged punk with other styles.

I've enjoyed Foetus, Skinny Puppy, Throbbing Gristle, KMFDM, Ministry, Sister Machine Gun, Coil and the like but the one thread that combines just about all of them is that it's very random, simplistic and lacking in production values. That's pretty par for the course for industrial music and I do appreciate a lack of polish (which is one reason I prefer Sublime's first studio album to their eponymous one). But there is absolutely nothing "pop" about NIN. Please, tell me exactly what part of "Heresy" or "Gave Up" belong in a playlist between Wacka Flacka Flame and that new "Friday Friday" song, or between Nickleback and the All-American Rejects?

Pop industrial would be more like Stabbing Westward or Gravity Kills or Linkin Park, bands who seem to think that adding screaming and faux-metal riffs to supersimple post-techno bleeps and bloops results in industrial music.

Also, I checked out How To Destroy Angels. Pretty cool stuff, but isn't it more trip-hop? Reminds me more of Portishead than NIN.

I don't get the 'pop' = 'all that is bad in the world' thing.
Cardigans, Suede, Space, Velocity Girl, The Beatles... pop music CAN be good.
And NIN is Industrial with gentle piano bits and soft vocals... surely it's not TOO unreasonable to consider them hallmarks of the pop genre?
That said, genre's are adjectives, not nouns, so it's perfectly fine for us to describe Reznor's stuff differently to each other.
I'm shocked that you don't admire the production in newer SP. How about oHgr? It's less gothic, more produced. Have you ever encountered Angelspit? Watching the blipverts of how they actually make their hyper-produced sound is mind-blowing sometimes.
I really do think 'simplistic' should not be applied to a lot of what you listed, though...

Hey, I listen to Mike Doughty and (can't believe I'm admitting it) Erasure. I don't think pop = everything bad in the world. But the 4 "bands" I mentioned are objectively awful. Pop- as a prefix usually means "watered down for mass consumption." For the guy who began an album with a sample from a little-known sci-fi flick about despotic oppression, included a song about killing oneself, and who used to put up films of war atrocities as a backdrop to his concerts, I wouldn't consider NIN mainstream, nor would I consider quiet moments or piano usage pop hallmarks. Check out Mars Volta - very far removed from pop. That band is absolutely despised because their music is so involved and experimental.

I agree with what you said, everyone has a different vocabulary and a different set of ears.

I listened to some oHgr on youtube and enjoyed what I heard except - and this is my most common complaint about industrial music - I didn't really enjoy the vocals. A lot of times, even if the singer is good, his voice is SO filtered throughout the whole song that it just sounds weird. I've never heard of Angelspit or a blipvert but I'm always curious to see how artificial sounds are engineered. Why don't you send me a link?

Now that I have a couple of dialogues going I'm afraid I'm hogging "the floor."

I'm really not the one to ask since I haven't done my homework (I'm more of a passing fan), but I've heard much of Mechanical Animals and it's bold and brilliant. It's the most dynamic stuff I've heard out of him overall.

It's not just screaming, in fact it's ironic you should ask that because I usually only like MM when it's a loud, fast burner. I haven't ever enjoyed the slower songs where he gets all melodic with his voice because, well, have you heard him sing? But muthafuckah can scream.

I also enjoyed the song he did for The Matrix Reloaded.

I saw one of his last ever (until the comeback) live shows in '09. While they weren't especially heavy, the sheer volume combined with the extreme lighting caused a massive sensory overload. I quite enjoyed it, but they/he won't ever rank as a personal favourite.

NIN is really good. Trent is an extremely talent composer (Oscar winner booyaaahhhh). I like a lot of his hits, but I find myself usually listening to his instrumental work.

True, I have a soft spot for instrumentals. It makes the artist focus that much more on the actual music instead of the lyrics.

I've always liked NIN. Good stuff, should look more into them. Currently only have With Teeth and The Downward Spiral. Though I have to admit when it comes to industrial rock my current favorite is definitely Blue Stahli.
