does anyone even care about the campaigns of games nowadays or is it aaaalllllll just the multiplayer? I love the campaigns of both cod and halo, but halo reach is gunna be sweet. I don't think that much so of black ops...

It's fun splitscreen or co-op or system linked but so are most other shooters. Quite frankly it hasn't changed much at all. The story never came across to me as epic as it tried to be. It became wildly popular but honestly it's hard to say it's a major influence on Modern Shooters (The argument really perplexes me). What shooters are even remotely similar to Halo at this point? It set a standard for online, but now good online is expected, so it doesn't even have that edge over other games. At this point, it's not any more remarkable then say, the next installment of Call of Duty or Gears of War.

The only thing that makes me like Halo above other FPSs is that it isn't afraid to be flashy and shiny and stuff. Games like Modern Warfare and Gears of War seem to think that only using three colors in your game is a good idea, whereas Halo isn't afraid to throw in some purple alien ships, green power armor, and a big red laser beam. Sure, as far as mechanics go Halo is nothing special, but it's a nice contrast from most shooters nowadays.

So yeah, if I wanna see how an RPG would tear through an enemy helicopter, I'll play one of the many realistic warfare games out there like Medal of Honor, Battlefield, or Call of Duty. If I wanna tear some guys in half with a chainsaw, I'll play Gears. But if I want to fire a laser beam into the core of a big, purple quadrupedal robot controlled by a host of orange worms... Halo.

Not only are the first games you mentioned NOT FPSes, I've never heard of them and they most likely suck. Just because they invented a tiny element that Halo eventually used means nothing.

Secondly, we're talking about CONSOLE FPSes there chief, you know, the ones that were made for kids who couldn't afford PCs to game on?

Halo CE was unrivaled at the time of its release on consoles, end of fucking story.

Uh, minor correction. Faceball 2000 was a first person shooter on the Super Nintendo. A console. That kinda fits the bill of what you were saying the "requirement" of discussion was.

Not that it was good...

I like how you comment on both the genre and quality of two games that you have never heard of. That's makes your argument sound. If you know nothing, you can't be wrong!

I looked at a few screenshots and honestly couldn't tell what the game was about. I bet it wasn't a fully 3D environment though so it's still kind of a pointless game to mention in this debate.

Sorry I'm not well-versed on old SNES games that bear zero resemblance to the discussion at hand.

Is the name of the trope you are suffering from. It's understandable.

I hear Reach is adding jet-packs. Don't know if that's consolation or not.

I'm going to assume you were talking to me with this post, and that you were still talking about Faceball. Yes, it was a fully 3D environment, at least as far as Doom was.

Here's a video of Stuttering Craig talking about it, though I think he may have been a bit too harsh with his retro review. [http://www.gametrailers.com/video/video-game-screwattack/702696]

Energy shields, the main reason I hate CoD, I get shot in the back with no ability to defend myself, with shield however you can survive the initial attack and counter. Camping is an effective way to start combat in halo, but it's a bad way to finish it. Sniping is still effective, but no BS quick-scoping or OHK bodyshots ruin the game for you.

Reminds me of Spectre for old Macs. So you got me, it's an incredibly old FPS that apparently uses regenerating health.

I still fail to see how that makes Halo derivative.

I would never call it a standard......its just a game that didn't get all caught up on being "realistic" and let you do what everyone wants to do anyway, blow shit up! You can't really compare it to other serious fps

I never said it did. Someone else did.

I'm just correcting your claim that Faceball is neither a console game nor an FPS. :p

EDIT: As an aside, I just had the mental image of the most hilarious claim that someone could make for hating Halo. "Halo sucks! It totally rips off Marathon!"
