Halo was the first popular game to not have weapon hyperspace pockets. It also had a grenade hotbutton.

It was one of the first to put a focus on vehicle sections. I'm pretty sure it pioneered regenerating health (I have mixed feelings about that).

Its a good game, and I'm tired of all the mouth-breathing fucking dildos on this site badmouthing it for no good reason. It was not mediocre, it was really good. You are allowed to not like it, but to level unfounded criticism is just stupidity.

Really? I comment in the bungie forums and the off-topic forum there pretty much hates every halo but the first and adores valve. But my view on halo is this. People like and buy things for a reason. If halo wasn't any good, people wouldn't buy it. Simple as that.(I my self find Halo very fun.)

Halo CE was a natural evolution of the FPS for consoles. They've stagnated since then and I have a feeling Reach will do no better.

As for copying elements from other games, that is a silly argument.

Guttenburg was the first printer, does that make any book printed today derivative and a rip-off? Of course not. Games steal from each-other, good ideas get used and bad ideas get thrown away. That's the creative process.

Halo still has some of the best vehicle mechanics in any game (not a driving sim) to date. Far Cry, Half Life, Red Faction, etc All have abysmal driving mechanics.

The first time in halo CE that you steal a Ghost from being on foot, speed to a Banshee, and start soaring through the air was absolutely amazing. Seamless transitions from first person to third and consistent controls, that is what Halo is all about.

Halo isn't the most revolutionary game ever made, few are, but it's become a hipster thing to bash it because of its popularity. I really, really, enjoy MW2...but it is one of the most unimaginative games ever made.

I still have no idea why people like Halo so much.
It brought absolutely nothing new to the genre. Seriously. Everything in Halo has been done before. There's no reason to play it, other than maybe the storyline, but that's a pretty shitty idea, looking at Halo's storyline...

i love how whenever halo is brought up, no matter where you go it's always an argument on if it's just a mediocre stain or a great game. it's like if someone ever brings up halo, something goes on in everybody's brain which screams "To battle!". even before i posted this i was contemplating on how i should defend halo's honor. lol.

I think it is best if we don't have Halo threads. They always end up in the same tired arguments.

I dont see what makes Halo better then Unreal Tournament. Does Halo have custom skins or player created maps?

All those things you mentioned did exist before Halo, but Halo was the first game to combine all those elements into an FPS about a super powered space marine in the future for a console
Which I said mid page 3.
Halo was an important milestone: Yes. THE milestone? Nope.

Oh dear, oh dear.
Halo: combat evolved.
not halo 3.
Don't confuse the two.
You misunderstood me; the entire franchise is shallow.
And Modern warfare isn't?

At least Halo 1 was inventive.
It gave a lot to the modern FPS.
And precisely is so good about the modern FPS's like Haze and all that jazz?
If Haze is the only modern shooter you've played then I feel very sorry for you.

What is good is up to the user to decide, all I said was that with out Halo CE there would be no modern shooters.

When a thread gets this long its time to give up. I come back from having a life and i racked up 17 messages while i was gone. I don't think anyone wants to bother reading everything we already talked about so they keep bring the same arguments back up. Its better to just let it go.

Yep, Halo/Half-Life threads often end up like this. After page 4 or so everyone repeats the same arguments. We need another genre to pull apart. ;)

Just to reiterate and give some extra feedback: here's 5 reasons WHY halo is great IMO.

5. Story- The weakest part of the games is greatly expanded but only if the player CHOOSES too. Want to skip the cut scenes and just shoot grunts? Go ahead. Want to learn more about the game's origins? It's easily available in both books and internet sources. You have the choice on whether you want to expand the story or not. The narrative is never shoved down your throat.

4. Music- Marty O' Donnell is a great man having created all the music for every halo game. It's beautiful, suspenseful, and at time just plain awesome. I've even gone through a level not even realized that the music was started because I had though it the actual game. It's that well integrated.

3. Vehicles- Not many first person shooters have vehicles as close to being as responsive and easy to control as Halo's. While tanks turning on a dime may not be realistic you won't complain when you control it with so much precision. Ever used a Warthog to carry the enemy flag back to your base in CTF? It's very satisfying.

2. Forge- Sure there are more extensive map editors but as I've once learned; limitations enable creativity. People are creating Optimus Prime with barrels and crates. Race tracks with tanks and traffic cones. And every map imaginable from every past halo game and more. For once, a FPS community has something to show.

1. Multiplayer- It's still up there. Every night tons of people log in and help Halo 3 reach the top of the xbox live charts. Bungie and their crew are infamous with their ban hammer skills and the experience is compelling and fun enough to keep you entertained for a VERY long time.

I keep top 5 lists in my head ALL the time so don't be so surprised.

It's likely the experience itself that still drives halo today. Aiming down the sights, not being able to jump ten feet, and grenades NOT sticking to people's foreheads are simply un acceptable to some who's first fps was halo or for the plain fans.

Halo 1: Simplicity and console-friendly-ness.
Halo 2: Competitive online multiplayer and cinematic campaign.
Halo 3: Turning Multiplayer into a social network.
Halo 3 ODST: ....Fuck all.
Halo Reach: ...What Halos 1, 2, and 3 said. Oh, and motion capture! (crap, that's already been done.)

just give it up already. I'm the biggest Halo fanboy there is, but I know that everyone hates it. Don't care. I still have yet to have as much FUN on my Xbox as I do with Halo. The people who think themselves better because they don't like it can continue to do so, see if I care.

It can't be argued that Halo's success changed the mainstream FPS formula. Before, it was generally a health bar and a list of like 10 different weapons that you found throughout the game. After Halo, everybody started using a rechargable health system, two weapons, and a melee button. They might not have been the first to dream up all these features, but they combined them in a fashion that not only made people want to play them, but in a fashion that sold so well that most every popular (or unpopular) FPS since has copied that formula, either directly or indirectly.

You have earned my respect, fellow enlightened one.

OT: Ehh.. I don't really care for Halo and any of its series. I don't care if it is original or not, I just don't like it. Some of the main gaming mechanics of it, mainly regenerating health, low gravity, and the vehicles just put me off of the whole game series.

And New standard? Really? Can someone please tell me what is actually new to the genre from this series?

Hey, I hated Halo when I was a console gamer too. Dark days...

On a more topical note, I don't care that Halo set the standard, because I hate the standard.
