NO game is a direct Halo clone of course,

What the hell...
*ahem*

republic commandos...
identical controls, identical health system, similar movement and jump speeds, the only thing different was that your main weapon could be modded into several different weapons instead of you having to search around to find them

still a good game, but pretty much a blatant halo clone... it even had flood levels

Did you seriously say it was a new standard of FPS?

Them be fightin words you know. You're insulting every FPS made before Halo.
And your insulting the process of refinement and progression. You are also insulting the context of the statement. But you probably hate Halo, so there's no coming back down from such an extreme, despite its illogical nature.

Didn't that game have an additional 3 characters that you could control and order about, make them do things like blow stuff up, open doors etc? That has been absent from Halo and makes it sound more like a Brute Force or The Thing clone to me.

IN counter to your "New standerd" Thing, Its only because every company wants that cash cow, and look at fallout, you can carry more weapons then you have toes, and its a great FPS, then the story comes in and makes me pass out from ze awesome!

I think Halo 2 and 3 failed miserably at the whole "innovation" thing

Pardon me good sir, but I believe you may be mistaken, Halo 2 introduced dual-wielding and vehicle jacking (not to mention playing as the Arbiter, which was dopenificent). While I'm pretty sure vehicle jacking was done in GTA (along with playing the as an enemy in some other games) dual-wielding seemed like Halo 2 did before other FPS's (not sure on this, it seems like the most successful integration of it). It also did a good job at vehicle jacking.

Halo 3 improved upon Halo 2 even further with forge, while it's not as polished as it's going to be in Reach it was at least a wonderful step for user created content. Let's also not forget about theater.

The only real thing I dislike about Halo are the rabid fanboys. It's a good game, and I love playing it but it's not the best (TF2 am best!).

So the problem with Halo as I understand it from this thread is that it's not totally a redefining of an FPS and you dont like shooters anyways because they dont tell stories well aaaaaand 8 year olds wipe the floor with you.

Come on its a shooter not an RPG. It simply is fun to play. And I can prove that because out of all my shooters and pretty much any none cutesy games my gf likes Halo. Specifically Grifball, but hey it Halo right?

Halo is goofy fun, with all the shiny, glowy guns, ragdoll physics, etc. For me, playing Halo just triggers the most primal "fun" section of my mind, probably partially contributed to by Halo 1 being the game to truly get me into gaming.

I can't honestly say Halo had anything that no shooter didn't have, THEN.

I mean, I still hold the first Half-Life in higher regard than Halo. Half-Life was a taxing game, where you had to sometimes outwit the opponents to win but Halo?

Halo started the whole, 'Multiplayer is better than the actual game' aspect which is such a step back if I wanted to play an FPS online I'd just play Team Fortress 2

For me at least I just like Halo. I could give millions of reasons like how the HOLY MIGHTY GREAT SANGHEILI GRACE THE PRESENCE OF THE GAME AND I AM BLESSED TO BE AMONG THEM or how I nostalgically remember playing the original Halo when I was a kid and that same sense of awe and wonder remains when I play it now at the age of nineteen or how I have a lot of fond memories playing it with friends but at the end of the day I just love the game.
It's fun to play with friends, it's fun to play the single player trilogy, it's fun to get other Halo fans together to discuss some of the references to mythology in the game and what it might mean and it's just generally a great game to play.
Maybe I don't consider it the greatest work of all time but I still love it and for me personally I enjoy it. I don't think these things need much further explanation.

I think it is because they don't do so many things right, but they do so little wrong. Bungie is a good developer, and they push the envelope just enough to give Halo that Halo-y feel.

Doom, Duke Nukem, Perfect Dark...the list goes on.

I'm not a Halo hater, I loved the first two games and I hope Reach actually gives me a reason to appreciate the franchise again. Let's just say that Halo 3 pooped on my pancakes and then ODST pissed in my chocolate milk.

Halo: Combat Evolved, isn't a bad game. Halo 2, was enjoyable for half the story. And Halo 3, despite being the 'conclusion' of the trilogy, failed to be as spectacular as it's predecessor's. Then again, this could be because when Halo first came out its story was fresh (at least for me it was). Halo 2 followed up with a cool idea, even though it was an idea I didn't like: Playing as the Arbiter. It was like playing as Master Chief, only now you sound kind of like James Earl Jones instead of Steve Blum. It was a cool concept though. (and that's why I say it was enjoyable for half the story).

Then, after years of waiting for the release of Halo 3, I took a train into New York City to go to the midnight release and pick up my Legendary Box Set. The helmet was cool, the extra crap was cool, even the box was cool. Sadly, Halo 3 just didn't do it for me. I played it from when I got home to before I had to go to school the next morning. I was in tenth or eleventh grade and had to have a friend of mine actually purchase it for me, with my money.

It was like playing a better looking Halo 2, which is aesthetically pleasing, but ultimately disappointing. I could care less for the Heavy Weapons, and some of the ridiculous achievements that require PATIENCE more so than SKILL.

The Hornet was cool...

Overall.

Pros: The Hornet
Cons: Everything NOT the hornet.

Note that im not a hater on Halo. I actually love it! But heres my problem. When Halo came out it set a new standard for FPS, and almot every shooter has taken after it since. You could say its the core of all FPS since its release. But what does Halo possibly have that no other shooter has now? I know this is mostly from my opinion but creativity wise, there isn't much that has been added. Or at least not original to Halo. I just feel like when I play it, its beginning to turn into a blurry screen and all I see are the basics of all guns, armor, and vehicles in todays FPS. So all I ask of you is to tell me what Halo possibly offers that we haven't already seen? I just want to enjoy the series again before I turn into a hater of a game I truly loved.
Why does something have to be completely new to be enjoyable? If so many people like the franchise then why change the core mechanics? Dont you think they have put enough content into the game for it to be enjoyed, such as the revamped forge and theatre modes, new campaign, new weapons, characters, multiplayer maps, vehicles, gametypes, ranking system, perks, everything like that? It doesnt have to be new and innovative to be good, it can still feel original and familiar. Like a wise man once said, "Don't fix somethin' that ain't broke." Sure it doesn't bring anything new to the fps genre, but it doesnt have to.

I am personally of the belief that halo has enjoyed its popularity due to it being the first FPS on the new gen(New gen refering to PS2, Xbox, Gamecube) consoles it was the flagship game of the xbox and has been riding on that wave ever since.

Call me a hater for that statement if you wish but it is my personal feelings on the topic.

People that bash games for not changing things up are the first people to complain when the game changes some of the basics and has a different feel. Bungie as a whole has done a good job listening to their community and involving them, this can't be said for most fps games that are out now, or really any gaem at all.

Halo will always be a favorite of mine even if its just for the point of online split screen, I can have friends over and still play online, not have to have all of them have their own consoles and own copies. Halo has a good system of checks and balances in it, and most games don't care about that.

Something Halo has, that nothing else has. Tough question, on the obvious side of this coin, their are giant space rings called halos that pose a horrible threat to everything. The enemies are aliens BUT NOTE that there are several different species that have joined together, all going after the humans. That was new; also, space parasite zombies fighting against very strong minded robots. That is just Halo: CE.

Halo 2, you can WIELD AN ENERGY SWORD and PLAY ON THE OTHER SIDE, those are two big things. The plot opens up with many more deadly halos. A new race is introduced early in the game, posing some threat. It also has a CIVIL WAR OF ALIENS FIGHTING EACH OTHER, a MASTERMIND ZOMBIE. The robots rejoin the humans to stop an other halo ring. Also, the brute chieftain Tartarus has a HUGE FREAKING HAMMER. That's Halo 2.

Halo 3, some of the aliens now are on the human's side. Much of this has been done before in the proceeding games, this brings up an issue. The plot is fine: Chief lands on earth, regroups, kills the prophet of truth, finds cortana, blows up the Ark and escapes to some unknown planet. It was a fairly average shooter, from halo standards. New things include: blowing up giant war machines named after bugs, not being able to play as the Arbiter on single player, and blowing up a giant version of a Halo.

Halo 3 ODST, is a different taste of Halo, it should not be played alone as it expects one to have knowledge of the expansive universe. It takes after a mystery adventure about normal soldiers, this hasn't been done in Halo, so it's new and cool to fanboys. It has new characters and an almost irrelevant plot line as the Chief is out winning the war.

Halo Wars, doesn't count.

Halo Reach, not out yet.

Gameplay wise, many people I think are passing over the obvious great parts of Halo:
-The Needler
-Splaser
-Energy Sword
-Forge mode
-Gravity Hammer
-Theater mode form Machinimas,
-Firefight mode
-The sheer amount of vehicles
-The less serious, less realistic gameplay
-Custom games that can become VERY custom
And the general game tactics that can ONLY be used in halo, when was the last time you lowered somebody's with a plasma pistol health to headshot them? How many games have people running in fear of a sword in a gun fight? What other game has vehicles so easily accessible?

What other game has GRIFFBALL?
