Well... well... Grrr!
More than enough games coming out this year to make my wallet feel used & dirty with how often it'll have to open.

Delays like this ARE usually to make a game better, but that doesn't mean the company is making good decisions. It would very definitely be possible to create Episode 3 in two years, if the company were extremely committed and able to plan things out to a perfect detail. When you read the developer blogs, the "making of" videos, etc, you learn that they mess up a lot of ideas and restart big parts. Anyone remember that airship level in Half-Life 2 that took you to a big air processing center? No? Hm.

But that doesn't really come as an excuse; by now they really need to know better about what they can keep a schedule to, and when a plan is not going to work. I'm going to bet at this point, a lot has been scrapped and redone, and the post-mortem interviews of this game are essentially gonna have a lot of textbook "what not to do"'s.

This is not saying it's going to be a bad game. I still think the end result could be really great. But I'm sure it could have been released faster than this.

The official HL2: Episode 2 forums (where all the Episode 3 speculation can be found) has been following this news for a week or so now, and its the general consensus that this is nothing more than a rumor. There is still a good chance that Episode 3 will be released in 2010.

Given how long they're taking (if the rumor is true) it damn well better be a full-on sequel. Or at least the most amazing episodic game ever released(which wouldn't that hard to believe, considering it's Valve).

At least we have Bioshock 2 and Mass Effect 2 to provide us with awesome single-player games while we wait.

I think Valve make some of the best games, but they could certainly work a lot faster. Other companies produce games I enjoy equally as much and manage to release stuff quicker. Valve, whilst talented seem to be incredibly ineffective at working quickly and efficiently.

Was this post needed? Did you honestly see a need to post something that has nothing to do with the OP? This isn't a, "Are you excited for HL2:E3?" thread...

In my opinion two bad things are happening with Valve right now :

1. The love of money epidemic hit them last year when they decided cashing in on an what is actually nothing more than an add on to L4D.
2. They are to much of a group of perfectionists and they take to long to make games. Everybody loves their games including me but we will all forget where Ep 2 left off if they decide to release Ep 3 in 2011.
It's the second. If you take away Valve's time, and make them release it in an hour, they all turn into Weredevelopers and start destroying things. Which leads me to...

Valve Time

Go look it up. And why does everyone get all pissy that they haven't gotten Half-Life 2: Season 6: Episode 3? I want to play a new Half-Life game, yes, but there are other things. If you've devoted yourself to one game series that you slowly reach for the nearest sharp object to thrust into your stomach every time the game takes a little longer, you are just the biggest of the big when it comes to fanboys. Valve should just burn down their own game studio, just to do a big "F-U" to all of the crazed fanboys. To quote Blizzard, "The release date is when it's done".
HAHA (You pulling a 3D Realms on me?) Please don't even try i fell for the 3D realms trick once and NEVER AGAIN! And even so i gave up on DNF after 2003 anyway..

What the hell are you talking about? I can't answer you without knowledge of what the question is...
Well from what i got out of your post you were telling all the fanboys to shut the hell up and wait am i correct? Well i was reffering to the biggest laughing stock of video game production in the history of space and time otherly known as Duke Nukem: Forever.. It started in production in 1997 and is still in production last i heard.. Hell they even released a teaser trailer in 2008... Thats the latest trailer i know of.. So i was just thinking you were tying to pull a 3D Realms on me..

If you actually think JJ Abrahms DIDN'T write up the first season of lost and had no clue where to go from there, I have a polar bear to sell you.

I know Valve takes half of forever to make games, but I am sure we'll get something Half-Life this year.

Patience is a virtue. Apparently. I'm not a follower of the Half-Life series, so how long ago was it when the last HL game was released?

RAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH

Luckily, this year has PLENTY of games to keep me occupied. Not to mention the ones I still have from last year.

Mass Effect 2
Red Dead Redemption
Fallout: New Vegas
Halo: Reach

And those are just off the top of me head.

Well, it is not what he claimed in several interviews. I would have more faith in Valve if they had said "Yeah, we know exactly how it's going to end." At least that would build my confidence that their story has been fleshed out.

Perhaps it would have been better if I had said, "Imagine LOST never revealing any answers, only more questions." I know there are questions that still linger in that show, and sometimes with each answer you get 5 more questions - but with Half-Life... it seems all we have are a bunch of questions.

If you haven't finished Episode 2, don't click here:
One guy reveals that he knows the G-Man and then *WHAM* he's dead. That's only another big question.

Some of you also seem to believe that I'm just complaining for the sake of complaining because my favorite game has been delayed, and why should I worry when so many other games have been delayed?

BECAUSE you DON'T friggin' end a level with a big "to be continued" and the fans expecting to see a conclusion in 6 months to 1 years time! That's just a dick move - and I'd say they pulled it off better (worse?) than Halo 2 did.

Ok, so it's going to be delayed. I can live with that - but now it's the issue of Valve not releasing ANY information about this game. Even if it was just an interview with the developers or such. Or trying to build any hype about the game - that really bugs me. The only people who seem to really care are people like me who just really want to see an end to the story. To those of you who didn't play the episodes, or didn't like them, I can see why you really don't care - it's no big deal to you.

Now I'm just ranting. :(
EDIT: (again)

Ngggaaahhhh silly cows! Now it is DANCING!

I would rather see a HL3 than Episode 3 because the Half Life games are epic win and the episodes, with the notable exception of Ep 2's Strider battle, are epic fail.

While I DO find this annoying overall, I generally find it worthwhile to count my blessings these days what with DLC and DRM debacles becoming the norm.
Valve makes good products.
Valve is one of VERY few companies I can consistently rely on for good games.
Valve can take all the time they want as long as the end product is good.
Deep breaths everybody...
This.

Good. This really makes me happy. Its Valves revenge for all the people whining about L4D2 and saying they should drop everything else for HL3. One of the most customer friendly companies around and all they do is get bitched at. So in return they torture you with no HL:3.
I love them all the more.
This.

Everyone is always mad at valve, then when the game they want comes out they looove them again.. And then get mad that the other games they have planned are taking too long.
Valve can release high quality games probably faster than any other company these days. Then again it helps to have the base engine already made up.
And offer free DLC for their Multiplayer games, support the modding community, maintain steam, et cetera.
I think Valve is doing all they can, and a pretty damn good job while at it.
And this.

These three posters have, in a few short sentences, said pretty much everything I was going to say in this post. I will add, however, that when Gabe Newell was talking about Episode 3 (and no, they still say there won't be a Half-Life 3), that they were going to be adding a game mechanic that was not only revolutionary, but was something no one had even thought about trying before. (i.e., something along the lines of the gravity gun or the portal gun only, as he put it, more "unique") So, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume that it'll take some time to flesh out the logistics of this new game mechanic, nevermind building and writing an adequate ending to one of the most celebrated franchises in gaming history.
