In the case that the accusations of North Korea torpedoing that ship are true (which they most likely are), the North Korean government is a bunch of idiots. I can't understand why they would purposely attack an enemy vessel knowing that it would only cause tension and possibly war between countries.

Thanks Guest Star, for showing Reggaerae what for. People who make comments like that are just bitter because my words hurt their ideals/ideology yet they know they cannot counter any of the logic... so go for a cheap shot with some grammar-nazi bullshit.

Reggaerae: You know the DoD did the right thing here, with both Operation Flicker and the ongoing military exercise as show of force against North Korea. If you think I'm wrong, don't waste my time having to defend your logical fallacies of Ad Hominem attacks.

Oh, and one more thing North Korea is a place of pure evil. The citizens are forced to literally WORSHIP their leader, those who don't or commit even minor crimes are sent to death camps. At these death camps, women are tortured and raped (one account from a survivor stated that her 13 yr. old sister, after becoming pregnant, was killed because no ones alowed to have children at the camps. The guards method of killing? taking a shovel and sticking it through her vagina into her heart. Sound like a good way to die?), men get their penis' cut off, people are starved to death, burned, poisoned, or simply toyed with for the amusement of the guards. of the UN aid that is sent to North Korea to help the population, only 1-5% get into peoples hands. The rest is sent to governmental and military allies. And lastly, many of these facts are confirmed by independent reporters who risked their lives to find the truth. Combine this with information from nearly all NATO allies about the threat North Korea poses to its own people as well as the stability of the WORLD, let alone the region, and you have more reason to go to war than ever before.
Wow... I knew it was bad but I didn't know it is THAT bad... damn.

I agree, we should get in there and liberate the population, not nuke it all to oblivion.

There will not be a war. Simple. The Koreans are not nearly stupid enough to start a nuclear engagement with the US. They only have nukes because the US government heavily implied they where planning to invade with the whole Axis of Evil thing, the nukes are just a deterrent. Also they are a great bargaining tool for oil, which the North Koreans have very little.

North Korea routinely threatens war in response to joint military exercises by the two long-time allies, calling them a rehearsal for war.

But tensions have been high for the past two months, since the US and South Korea accused the North of torpedoing a warship with the loss of 46 lives. The North denies involvement and says the "smear campaign" is a pretext for aggression.

The United States and South Korea have begun four-day joint exercises -- the first in a series -- in what they say is a bid to deter North Korea's "aggressive" behaviour.

In a show of force, Seoul and Washington began the exercise involving 200 aircraft, 8,000 service personnel and 20 ships including an aircraft carrier in the Sea of Japan. The drill is the first in a series intended "to send a clear message to North Korea that its aggressive behaviour must stop", US Defence Secretary Robert Gates and South's Defence Minister Kim Tae-Young said in a joint statement this week after talks.

South Korea and the United States, citing findings of a multinational investigation, accuse the North of sending a submarine to torpedo a South Korean warship near the tense Yellow Sea border in March.
Basically, the US and South Korean governments are going to do military exercises to deter North Korea's agression.
I suspect that they are trying to scare North Korea with their military force into stopping them from taking any further actions against South Korea.
I believe that no decisions have been made yet whether or not the military exercises are going to continue, but it would surely defeat any purpose if they're trying to stop North Korea from taking action since North Korea will unleash a nuclear war if they do those exercises.

The discussion here is: "Who do you side with and what should happen?

Normally, I'd side with the US, but I've lost a heck of a lot of trust in them since the child porn scandal in the Pentagon.
North Korea might always be seen as either "the enemy" or "the insane ones", but how do you know for sure?
It's like saying that all Americans are fat and stupid.
I don't want there to be a nuclear war.
I just want the American government to stay the hell away from this.
This is between North and South Korea. I believe that the US' involvement will only throw more wood on the bonfire since they have a hostile relation with each North Korea.
Perhaps I'm missing something here, because I'm sure that the Americans are more educated on this matter than us Europeans, but I'd like to hear other people's thoughts.
Well, you're right, you are missing something. The US is trying to help set up a democratic Nation in that general area. Thats why tehy;re also always defending Isreal. They want a democratic nation in that area too.

Anyway, no, the US shouldnt get involved in the world, but if they dont, wat other global superpower is going to make sure it doesnt go to hell in the hand basket? So while they shouldnt be involved, they have to be involved.

America doesn't need to nuke N Korea, we've go so many fucking weapons it's a buffet of death. (after all, we could just fire regular missiles at their nuclear plants)
And nobody in their right mind is going to come to the aid of a 3rd world (it pretty much is) country that has absolutely no value. China and N Korea are technically allies, but there's been more than one occasion where China has been embarrassed by this. N Korea is China's little brother who he doesn't bring to parties because he's a whiny brat who cries when no one plays with him.

And if N Korea attacks anyone, US or no, then we DO have the right to retaliate if they're an ally of ours (preferably with the consent of that attacked nation).

I'm not reading a whole thread, but if we're talking about Korea and nukes and nobody's yet made a "Nuclear Launch Detected" joke I'm going to be very disappointed in you all.

Would China allow a war between NK and US or would they step in and make shit more complicated for everyone?
I Really doubt they would be happy. Think about it. NK is small, ( so far as countries go) China would be unhappy in the same way texas would be unhappy if Alaska nuked New Mexico

If it escalates to a nuclear war, America will be in a bit of a pickle as they cant nuke North Korea, but North Korea has no problems in nuking America.

EDIT: Seeing as a whole lot of people keep quoting me over how "OMG America CAN nuke N.Korea!", let me explain.

Think about how many allies America has close to North Korea. The resulting fallout of the nuclear warheads may very well spread to South Korea, Japan, maybe China. Its probably the reason why America didn't nuke North Korea yet.
Or because we never had a good reason. I mean, everyone is entitled to their opinion, just if you have the wrong one your stupid.

Like others have pointed out the main problem in a war would be China, they really wouldn't like the idea of a democracy so close to them, especially if it ends up going well like South Korea.
I say give it to the Russians, they have good experience with irradiated land, and it's not like they're gonna do anything with it.

ALSO: North Korea doesn't have worthwhile nukes. he can BARELY reach Hawaii. he cant touch America, but America can touch him. his nukes are a joke compared to American nukes.
You're right that they aren't THAT dangerous, but even the shittiest nuke is an INCREDIBLY potent weapon.

It's hard to over-emphasise the dangers of nuclear-bombs, Can you even comprehend what 20 kilotons of TNT even looks like!? That is a small mountain of high explosives, there is NO DEFENCE from nuclear weapons used on any battlefield, you can't shield from it, you can't hide from it, the only chance you have is to run away.

The danger is not that North Korea will "blow up america" but that it could attack any of the dozens of bases in the region that could kill thousands of US Military personnel. Or they could simply use it as nuclear blackmail so they can use conventional forces to retake some disputed territory... or maybe expand territory.

Consider if North Korea invades South Korea... will America (or Japan with it's quasi-military) really want to help South Korea if it means risking tens of thousands of their servicemens' lives as it would be VERY difficult to come to South Korea's defence if NK resorts to using nuclear weapons against any American or Japanese fleet. I mean how do you stop a nuclear torpedo? it only has to get close to detonate and:

It would be bad.

Odds are, with the right/wrong leaders they will blink, they only have to hesitate, and let NK have the south rather than risk any task force being decimated by nuclear weapons.

That is why NK wants nuclear weapons, exactly the reasons they stated: for defence. But they'd only mainly need that defence if THEY were on the attack!

North Korea threatens U.S. with a good mooning. North Korea threatens to unlock a rift in the fabric of the space-time continuum releasing the Dalek race upon every nation of the world unless the U.S. stops giving food to it's people, who are still starving.

Kim Jong Ill is said to be in talks with Emperor Palpatine. While the Emperor was unavailable for comment, his closest aid believes a fruitful working relationship is possible between the two parties: "My Master finds this Kim Jong Ill to be most agreeable." said the Sith Lord who goes by the name "Darth Vader".

The ageing North Korean leader also appears to be in dealing with a mysterious race from beyond the galaxy's edge only known as the "Reapers." Concerns were raised when it was suggested that this race may have wiped out an ancient space faring race called the "Protheans," who's empire is believed to have once stretched across the entire galaxy.

Experts are taking all of these threats equally seriously.
I wonder what will happen when his 'Yes-Men' finally own up to the fact that all of his allies are fictional villains.

Maybe he'll have another stroke.
He'll probably try to force choke them.

As soon as SC2 comes out the aggression will die down.

Seriously though, you wouldn't sign with the US? Even if I don't consider to necessarily be bad, I would sign up with the US in an instant, a familiar evil is better than an unfamiliar one, and to be frank I've alot of trust in the US, even if they fuck up occasionally, they're like a kid with good intentions... And nice guns.

on the plus side at least we'll get to kill something slighly different looking in our modern combat games now, pesky koreans and russians (it's always something and russians) instead of 'opfor' and russians.

If we are luckly, we could fight MECHA HITLER and MECHA KIM combined into mechakimler?

Wouldn't the weapons from a single silo in the US incinerate North Korea before they could react? I think we should do that.

Considering the mutation that would happen with radioactive material, I'm putting my money on ZOMBIE KIM. And maybe later in the game he combines powers with MECHA HITLER to create ZOMBIE MECHA KIMZILLA. And although that is a mouthful, just imagine how cool it would be to fight him...
