If it's actually just a satellite, then the Koreans are justified to respond, I do believe.
If not... what's one missile gonna do?
Theres about 20 million people in the greater Los Angeles area, 100 million in Japan, 3 million in the area of Vancouver, 50 million in South Korea, and then of course there's China, but I'm not sure of their relations with North Korea.

One nuke in the right spot and a LOT of people die.
Yes? North Korea is packed, though.
Any missile sent back in response would kill untold millions of Koreans. You can bet if North Korea is stupid enough to launch, then it's going to get about 4-10 missiles dropped on it.
That'd be about 70% of the population oblitorated, a tragedy of such magnitude that launching a nuclear rocket is the dumbest "paint a target" in the universe.

I've got my bets on it just actually being a satellite.

Xactly.

Don't forget the radiation cloud. If a nuke was launched on a windy day, that radiation cloud will spread.

Say a nuke is dropped in LA. The wind is blowing to the East. That cloud spreads across U.S. and kills ALOT more people.
See this is why I like living in an obscure location on the Northern East coast. There is nothing near me that anyone would ever target.

You asked what one missile could do, I answered. I don't presume to know the inner workings of the North Korean government or whoever puts comms satellites up in that country.

Hehe. This is all so much fun. It's just a repeat of the cold war. Superstition and paranoia. I'm pretty damn sure they're just firing up some satellite, probably for TV or phones. Japan and America have gone crazy declairing that this is some nuclear test of long range misslies and are going to shoot it down. NK has just scratched its head over heir stupidity.

Unless I've missed something, this is what it sounds to me in easy-to-read baby talk.
That's basically it, except for NK saying they will invade and destroy Japan. I realize, most likely, nothing will happen, but it is still something to be somewhat worried about.
Dude, South Korea said it wants to destroy Japan. As well as China. And Vietnam. And Loas.

This isn't anything new. They've been saying this for years and launching empty rockets into the sea.

I can give you a definite pattern to their actions -

1. They fall out of the global media limelight.
2. They build a rocket and tell they world they are going to launch it.
3. They play a lot of patriotic images and have a few parades, stirring up some anxiety.
4. They wait for everyone to reach their regular places (US, China, Japan, Britain, France and India).
5. They launch said rocket and it either works or crashes into the sea. One outside nation analyzes the payload contents and says, "NOT A NUKE OR EVEN CLOSE."
6. North Korea basks in the light of their popularity for a few months.
7. Repeat yearly.

What's fun is to watch China and the US play reverse Pong with the North Korean army. China will start an exercise and mobilize to the border, drawing all the NK army there. Then the US will start an exercise and mobilize near the DMZ, drawing the NK army clear across the mountains to the DMZ. And they'll do it like three times each in a year. It's hilarious, but sad at the same time.

Well that changes it a little. But It still sounds like they're just telling the rest of the world to get off their back.

Well, the cold war esculated a lot more than this and all we got was lousy (T-Shirts) movies and propergander.

Oh crap oh crap oh crap oh crap.

I don't like where this is going, but then again, I dislike most things.
My concern, though? Those people that could come to major harm if this gets blown out of proportion.
And to add fuel to the fire: I live near one of the US's most advanced Military Technical Testing Grounds. Which is bad when we get into this.

I am very concerned right now.

I love how a lot of people aren't worried about this at all, and believe North Korea is bluffing and in a few days this will all blow by.

And what if they aren't bluffing and launch the rocket, which gets shot down, and NK invades Japan? That's just what the world needs right now is another war...

As the good Booze Zombie pointed out, if NK invade Japan, the rest of the world will be all over them like white on rice.

Yes, that should be fine. Who cares what happens we'll all just destroy NK and there will be no consequences! *Note Sarcasm*

North Korea has a very very limited nuclear program. All they've developed thus far is a few nuclear bombs, and it was rather low yield. Even if they did have the capability to affix a warhead to a Taepodong II, and considering how many problems they've had developing their long range missiles up until now, I'd say they'd have a tough time making even one workable ICBM/warhead combination. Odds are if they did launch an attack, one or the other would fail. They're not a threat, they just have a crazy bastard with an inferiority complex for a leader. The fact that China has actually tried to calm them down and scale back their boisterous attitude doesn't bode well, considering China is one of their largest allies. They have very few allies, and I doubt the countries that have used their technology to secretly build nuclear weapons factories or obtain enriched uranium probably aren't going to jump forward and admit it if North Korea is attacked. I just feel bad for the citizens of North Korea who have to put up with Kim Jong-Il and his bat-shit insanity.

And as I pointed out, China doesn't want war in the region, since it will disrupt the trade. They like North Korea even less than they like JAPAN, and that's saying something right there.

If we blow up their rocket, and they start an invasion, China will probably swoop in and end it with their own counter-invasion.

It's like having a lemon-aid stand, and then some kid comes around and starts a fight in front of it. Most stand owners would run out and boot the kid who started the trouble in the ass if they can. And I do believe China could boot NK's ass any day.

Honestly? I'm more worried about... you know... radical Islam? You know, that religion that keeps publicly stating about how it wants to destroy every single other religion out there? Including those who don't follow religion? North Korea is a really small threat. They launch a single missile and we can just carpet bomb them to hell and back. Radical Islam? Well... tell me exactly how you plan on taking care of roughly a hundred million people in all portions of the globe.
Shhh. There's no such thing as radical islam, its a peace loving religion, only a few fringe people believe in jihad, and those are cause we are mean to them by giving them billions in money for oil by oppressing them and supporting the terrorist nation of Israel.
/extreme sarcasm

Yeah I'm more worried about muhammed on a bus with a backpack bomb than the NK guys getting frisky in their part of the world.

If North Korea does try to start something it would be interesting to see the developments. Either South Korea would take the offensive, unite Korea and give the US a base spot right at Chinas borders...Or China would step in and take over North Korea...one of its oldest allies.

They're pals with China, China has a space program, why not let them shoot the thing into space?

Findge people. Heh. Thats rich. The typical estimation from my understanding is that 10% of Muslims are Radical. 10% seems really small... untill you take into account that your talking about one billion people. 10% of a billion is one hundred million people... which is a third of America's population. They basically have an army that is larger then any standing army on the planet.

I think that's kind of the problem with understanding the whole situation over there.

China associates with North Korea, because they used to support a Communist system similar to China's. However, since 1989, China has been less friendly with North Korea, and now merely tolerates their existence, since they have other issues to work on that are more important than keeping North Korea on a short leash. They only do it when these things pop up because they don't want anyone screwing up their business.

North Korea, on the other hand, assumes that since it borders China, China acts as the main deterrent to invasion from South Korea. That's never been true - we've been merely helping South Korea keep the peace, and the resources of North Korea are not worth a war that could drag on for a couple years.

Don't you know? The new sarcasm thing is to end sentences with one of these: (!). It helps to tell the serious people apart from the sarcastic ones.
