I'm getting the vibe here that when people say "nudity", mostly what is meant is female nudity. I have no gripes about seeing the occasional side boob here and there, or, God-Goddess-Deity-of-choice-Forbid, some unwarranted pussy or arse, but why is mostly everyone assuming nudity only includes females?

I think any reasonable young adult or mature child can deal with a lot more shit than we give them credit for, just as long as you, as a parent, are nearby to answer any questions about it later on.

Go on, call me a hippy, I dare ya :)
I quite agree, I pointed out the fact that this isn't automaticly female nudity a few pages back.

The way I see it, it all goes back to the people at the ESRB. As far as we know, the developers want to put meaningful sex and nudity in games (like in Heavy Rain or Mass Effect), the people at the ratings bureau just won't have it and threaten to slap an AO rating on it, thus killing the game's chance at selling.

I'd like games to be like movies: Where if it's rated R or Adult, it can have mature themes and depictions across the board, like nudity and things like that. Movies have them all the time, and I think video games should have that same freedom of expression.
This for the fucking win!

I hope the Supreme Court case decides in our favour. Maybe this will come true then, what with lawmakers unable to easily target games anymore (assuming we win, of course).

I'd like to know, just to flame up this little thread, what the difference for all of you guys is between fake 3D video game boobs and the extremely provocative imagery that is being fed to us daily by any number of big billboard/advertising/media companies. (Slutty girls slurping up chocolate like it's their favorite dickshaped treat? Nearly invisible clothing on dick-wrenchingly gorgeous models that stare with smoldering eyes at the camera? Really, media? You're telling me about a hundred polygons' worth of 3D boobs is TABOO?!)

As it happens, it seems nudity is really only unacceptable just as long as it doesn't directly profit the company that is creating/using it.

... I think my soul has just died a little. -_-

That is because video games right now is everyones favorite punchbag. I really wish that the world would be rid of the irrational soccer moms that goes and buy GTA for their 10 year old kid, and then tries to blame on the game, because they are to goddamn stupid to understand what "rated M for mature" means. And the entire Fox News might go and blow it self up, doing the world a favor.

No I'm not bitter, not at all.

Because Nudity means sex, and sex is a kind of awkward topic in games. Violence is pretty standard, as you're usually killing bad guys: Aliens, Nazis, Zombies, Demons, Terrorists, Robot alien zombies, psychological dissillusions created from the depths of your soul to torment you, etc. However, sex is different. You know how it's controversial, and I'm sure most developers really don't want the Adult Only rating that usually comes with games that features graphic sexual content. I usually don't like sex in games unless it's important to the story, and even if it's for the story, I don't like it being very long or graphic.

It's because when people think video games, they think children. And so, if you include nudity in a game, people think you're trying to expose children to nudity, even though >70% of people who play games are probably old enough to not be counted as "children" anymore. Whereas in advertising/media, they can get away with it because they aren't directly targeting children. Ridiculous, but it happens.

Pray we win, for if we lose, the One Ring will fall into the hands of the US Government. ;O
That would be pretty bad.
I'm however feeling ever so slightly optimistic about games some day not to far away will be judged equally to any other medium.

Our society in America grew out of battle, and thus it became accepted. But movements on the other end were condemned by the group think that pervaded at the time. Religions helped this mostly, where bloodshed is part of culture, but nudity and sex is not. Because in this as in most other countries, what makes a game instantly a higher rating is what is still considered taboo.

People who claim it's wrong, are in fact wrong. If you're gonna complain about it, QUIT BUYING THE GAMES FOR YOUR BASTARD CHILD!
/end rant
Like most above, society and taboos play a big part.

Ahh, yes. One ring to rule them all. And as we all know, the government is Sauron.

Where the devil is Mithrandir when you need him? He could sort this out. Obviously, having King Elessar would help too.

Okay, I really need to get out more XD

If done right nudity can and most likely will become natural soon enough. Considering that most of our media have been thriving because nudity is the base for media. Painting were made of nude women and men. Sexual Intercourse had been photographed thousands of times. Amateur love making is video taped constantly. And now games have a turn as well. Hopefully it will leave stupid sexuality behind (Hot Coffee) and bring in more mature and passionate relationships (Watchmen).

Because there is a greater portion of girls getting pregnant than there is violence in students. So rather than encourage more people having babies, they encourage violence which is less dominate in teens.

By covering up sexuality and not talking about it, teenagers only get more intrested in it and the whole thing gets overhyped.
And the idea that "teaching" violence somehow is better that teaching about birth control and how to protect yourself against STDs, is just outright stupid.

Beeing open about sexuality would together with sex ed help reduce STDs and teen pregnancy not the other way around!
Besides Nudity =/= Sex

Consider that the same thing happens with movies. M(18+) is less dangerous and more common for movies than video games, but the problem is that the two biggest countries in the vidya game business are the US and Japan. Japanese businesses want to gain a foothold overseas around the world and they usually go to the US distributors first. They want to make the games less sexual, so the Japanese companies oblige because that's their biggest market.

(Of course, then they go whole-hog on the violence)
