People who use these terms regarding Obama are complete and utter idiots. Actually they are beyond stupid.

I blame US education and the media for instilling these misconceptions.
The US education teaches about the government styles and how they work (at least, mine did) and your British, so I think your just pulling the "education thing" out of nowhere.

If four years of studying political philosophy has taught me anything, it's that:
1)The words Socialism/Communism/Fascism/Totalitarianism are NOT interchangeable, regardless of what Fox News will have you erroneously believe. And whilst fascism is normally totalitarian, socialism doesn't have to be, and as I'm sure will have been stated by the time I've finished writing, true communism is necessarily stateless (hence the USSR was not communist, but a perversion of socialism).

2)Obama is not a socialist/communist by any stretch of the imagination. He's a liberal, and thus pro-capitalist. Universal healthcare may have its roots in socialism, but these days it is rather commonly accepted to be morally 'right' across the globe (or at least in nations that can afford it/have it as a priority). As for the claim of fascism, in common usage, it's a pejorative slur often used without evidence in place of real debate, and I see no concrete way in which it can be justified against Obama.

To sum up, despite my strong dislike of Obama, he is neither a communist, nor a fascist, and those two terms are more different than is peddled by the ignorant and those seeking to discredit one or the other.

You can't actually expect people to know shit about politics! Seriously, people should have to pass a quiz proving they actually know about politics before they vote.
But then you bring up all of the Jim Crow laws that are unconstitutional. Well maybe not all of them, but the ones that limit your ability to vote by tests or other proofs of intelligence.

Back to the point: Fascism and Communism are not exactly opposite in regards to American political ideology. The left is seen as strong government (both of those) and the right is seen as a more relaxed government (republicans, or more extreme anarchy). However, many political commentators (Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck are the more popular ones of these) use them as buzz words to inspire emotion from their viewers (similarly when Chris Mathews calls Republicans Nazis).

All of this socialism as an insult will hopefully die down in about 40 years when the oldest generation (me) would have no direct contact with Regan or the USSR as an enemy. Sooner if the 24 hour news channels get more of a true, honest form of journalistic integrity and true non-biased reporting.

Its America. The red scare pretty much forced the wrong ideas of socialism into the american pysche plus the fact ever since Regan messed up capitalism in America things have got worse, so know one really knows whats wrong or right with the place.

Bush had 8 years to piss america away and he did it pretty well Obama has had like 8 months if even to fix that mess and America and the world is in one hell of a mess.

those terms are only used by people who have no fucking idea what in the world they mean. he's absolutely neither, and the critics i think are not taking into account how difficult it is to be president. he can't be superman and stop the oil crisis in the gulf at the drop of a hat, there are several outside factors outside of his control of everything.

Intelligent people in our media & political circuits all identify themselves with either one of the two main parties or a third, smaller, minority. They then use their media powers to do whatever they can to undermine their opponents.

The whole "Obama is a _____" started waaay back before he was elected, when someone, somewhere decided to spread a rumor that Obama was a Muslim (because his father & his middle name). News sources drop hints to get these rumors started to undermine the authority of their enemies. The whole communist/fascist thing is no different.

For instance, a radio show might have a guest speaker on who will talk for 30-45m about how he/she is worried about the new healthcare bill and how "it reminds me of some of the policies instilled in the USSR prior to 1992, and how (name drop communist politician) made (insert change to Russia in conversion to communism)". People don't have the intelligence to interpret information, so they instead think "OMG Obama = communist!", then they spread the rumor to their friends. And the stupid people propagate said rumor to infinity.

In America, because of the cold war, people tend to have a knee-jerk reaction to anything labeled "communist" as much as other people have to "fascist" or "nazi". So, labeling someone a communist is the same as calling them an evil, no good, enemy of the people. Many people don't even know what the words mean or the history of why they are feared & hated. Just as nobody really means it anymore when they say "Man, my teacher is such a nazi!".

For the record, the same stuff was happening when Bush was in office, it just wasn't as popular since it was easier to pick on his speech problems and use them as evidence of ineptitude.

Americans have this weird thing i like to call the "Logic"[/i} train, here is how it works.

Lets take an example

healthcare > Not enough doctors for plan > Some patients get lower priority > Some patients will be ignored > Some patients will be murdered > A commitee will choose who dies > Obamma chooses who dies > It might be your grandma > It will be your grandma > Obama is going to murder your grandma > Obama likes murdering grandmas > "LOLOL IM AN IGNORANT AMERICAN SPOUTING COMMUNISM AND NAZI LIKE I ACTUALLY HAVE A VALID POINT."

Basically this. The first one is true, the second one is a possiblility and the third one amiercans yank from their ass. That remains true as it continues. Not all americans are ignorant, ive met a fair share of very well informed americans, this is what i see in the media and it makes my blood boil. These people bearly register as people for me. They are ignorant to the point of becoming parasites and are an infection in a normal society,

That's the logic of ignorant idiots for you. Like Glenn Beck and friends. I always think it's extremely disrespectful to the victims of Stalin, Mao and Hitler when Obama is compared to them. I'll have to stop here or else I'm gonna go into rage-mode and get suspended or worse.

You know very average individuals from the United States. By that, I mean quite ignorant. There is no such thing as a person being simultaneously a Communist and a Fascist- they are mutually exclusive. Somebody could say that Obama was secretly a Communist (and be dead wrong), or secretly as Fascist (and be dead wrong)- but it is impossible to suggest that he is both secretly a Communist and a Fascist. It is a logical impossibility that obliterates itself.

And disrespectful to modern day Communists/Socialists (me, Akai Shizuku, IdealistCommi, ect.) who can't shake the stigma of Stalin and Mao, and disrespectful to modern day Fascists (like DementedTeddy, cuddlyrazor, ect.) who can't shake the association with Hitler.

Of course, in America, Socialists can't even get away from wrongful association with Hitler.

Yes, but if we don't allow the stupid ones to vote then we aren't a democracy anymore.

So what is easiest to ger rid of, democracy or stupid people?

Ok now I live in Canada and I have heard some of my US friends and other people in the US that I don't really know(online game stuff)say that Obama is a Fascist and a Communist. But what I don't understand is that isn't fascism one extreme of the political scale and communism the other? So what I am trying to say is what do they really mean? Or are they just saying random ignorant things? (Also I don't have a super understanding of politics this is just something I have been trying to figure out so please correct me if I am wrong)

PS Please lets not start something here the only thing I want here is my question answered (or corrected)
They want to convince you that Obama is a bad president but they are not actually aware of any of the actions he has taken or their potential consequences (good or bad) so they rely on rhetoric, buzzwords and straw man arguments to try and convince you that their views are correct even though they do not have any substantial evidence to back up their claims.

Obama can be categorized into a lot of things, but Marxist and Communist are the terms you want to use to define him. Here's why.

Karl Marx argued that an economic minority, the rich, can dominate the working class. So far, that's not true. In fact, the rich pay the most for their wealth. So ten percent may own the most money in America, but those same people provide %70 of the total tax revenues. The Middle class, the %60 in the middle, pay the remainder of the taxes. The impoverished, the lowest %30, pay nothing, and they also receive the majority of government aid that is funded by taxpayer money.

So, given that, why would Obama want more money from the rich and the middle class for the poor when there's no reason to do so? The answer is because those people who have nothing often believe that some one should provide for them, whether they deserve it or not. So, if someone says he'll tax the rich and the middle class to provide even more for the lowest class, if you were in the lowest class, you would be all over the guy.

The problem is if you punish those who have to provide for those who do not have, you get a class of people who refuse to work and live off the government and the working class. Then, when people see that their work is being punished, what reason would they have to keep their businesses large and profitable? They would choose to shrink their businesses to escape the taxes and in the process, Capitalism dies. That leads into Communism.

Is that good? Hell no. Capitalism is part of our culture, as well as nearly every other successful nation out there. It's the reason sites like The Escapist even exist, or why we have companies that compete against each other to give us better gaming. If you have any common sense, would you throw that away?

Also, here's few other things to consider about this guy:

1. Why has Obama not sent FEMA or foreign vessels to help with the spill, yet he's going back to cap and trade and green energy talks?

2. Why did he suggest that there be a "civilian national security force" that answers only to him?

3. Why has he brought in all these czars, who by their very definition, are not constitutionally elected, and therefore, not able to make policy decisions?

4. Why did he fire General McCrystal because of an article published in Rolling Stone Magazine, and because of "insubordination" when that means disobeying orders?

5. Why has he continued to pass bills and legislation without letting us speak about them?

I think Michael Savage put it best: "Most people don't realize that we have a baby dictator in power right now. You say that's crazy? I say you're crazy."

I agree, %100. This is in no way a race issue, but if people are defending him because they think it's that, it shows that they truly cannot think outside racial lines. And I pity people who think that way.
