I voted for Obama, and I'm very optimistic. I haven't felt this good since Clinton was elected.

Universal Healthcare is my biggest concern and I'm hoping Obama will enact some legislation moving us towards that!
That's Biden's job. He's President of the Senate.
It's the responsibility of the Congress and Senate, not Biden. Biden's only real responsibility in the Senate is to cast a tie-breaking vote if it's needed. Ultimately, it's Obama's job to sign into law any legislation that would come from Congress and the Senate regarding Healthcare.

No offense, but you need to brush up on your civics bro!
My civics only covered political theory, not specifics. That comes next year. Anyway, the point of my statement was that even if Obama says the Senate should do something, if they don't then Biden has a higher authority over Senators than Obama does because he's President of the Senate and thus of higher rank in legislation than Obama, who is an executive (I know both are executives). Representatives and Senators alike will listen to the President in these dire times, but in easier times, the President would have to ask the vice President to get legislation moving. The House of Representatives has its own system as far as I know.

That's not how it works. The VP does provide assistance in getting things moving, but it's always up to the President to sign legislation into law. If he vetoes the legislation, then it must pass by a 2/3's majority in the Senate to be overturned and become law. The VP's ONLY power is to cast a tie-breaking vote when the Senate is dead-locked. Other than that, he's not that important in terms of getting bills signed into law.

I'm pretty skeptical about his abilities and what he might do while in power.

Honestly, I think he's just going to clutter up the news for a while with headlines like "Pres. Obama eats white bread sandwich to symbolise walls between races torn down" and eventually degenerate into a mediocre/bad president who will increase American resentment in the world and do little good.

But then again, I don't live in America. I live in a country where politicians are synonyms for "Thieves" and "bastards".

In regard to people's comments about the vice president, I think the last 8 years in this country has seen a significant increase in the power the vice president can wield. In the Bush/Cheney administration it was clear that Cheney had as strong an influence if not stronger than Bush by acting through others. It is still unclear how strong that influence has been and what the long term effects of this administration will be. It will be interesting to see the papers that the supreme court required him to leave behind and read his book when he does finally get one of those deals.

As for Obama, he is just one man, but if his campaign has told us anything he is incredibly intelligent and intuitive. He will rise to the challenges.

This may seem strange for the british person to say, but I hope he stops policing the world and fixes his own country. I hope he completely ignores Israel and Palestine, pulls out of Iraq, pulls out of Afghanistan (bonus points if he can kill Osama first) and help reinvigorate the US economy. Why? Because Brown (or Cameron) would do the exact same thing.

Hmmm. I don't live in the States, but I definitely would not have voted for Obama. Mostly on account of his haircut. I hope he does badly, but it's pretty unlikely that he could make things worse than they already are.

Fun fact: America has been socialist as long as Americans have been on welfare.
Yay, I learned something.

I HOPE he does well, but I'm skeptical. I don't pretend to know where this country needs to go or what it needs to do, and I honestly don't think he's the best man for the job. But he's what we have, and we have to make the best of it.

Good luck, Obama.

Yes! God bless your goofy Canadian booze!

As for Obama, I think at least he will act on what he says, because unlike Bush, he isn't gonna let his cabinet run the damn country for him! At least I hope not. Still, like my grandfather said on his deathbed: "At least things'll start looking up from here."
He died on New Years.
I hope he was right.

I remember someone in my Maths clas singing a song about Obama. It was like "obama, obama, do do do diddle-doo-doo." of course, we didn't really care as we're in the UK, oh well.

Since President-Elect Barack Obama will become President Obama in 10 days, how do you think his term will go? Feel free to add specifics.
Better than it would if the owner of an oven chip company had won?

they damn near killed each other in the primaries and then he snubbed her for VP. i seriously doubt obama's going to be inclined to defer to the clintons.

My only thought is that he's getting way more attention on the fact that he's the first black president rather that he's the president. I hope that this will not mean that he'll be let slide if he fucks up.

I'm very sad. I don't feel that President elect Obama has the know-how to do the job, and I don't agree with the pull-and-run attitude in Iraq. I'm very concerned for our nation in the next four years, and my prayers are with President Bush as he retires.

That's sad that I agree with this. I can see the conversation I might have a few years later already,
Me: "Hey, remember that upstart president? That one who sucked, whatever his name was?"
Guy: "You mean that Obama failure?"
Me: "Yeah! Remember how he sat in office and didn't do anything useful?"
Guy: "Yeah, that was funny."
Me: "The definition of anticlimactic."
Guy: "Don't you mean irony?"
Me: "No, I mean anticlimactic."

Then it devolves into an argument about anticlimactic vs. irony.
