Well obviously you just suck at oblivion. Just kidding, I suck even worse. I played itat near lowest difficulty and had a blast. It is rather tricky, but when first played it, seeing how it was my first 360 game, I could not put it down. And have never seen a unicorn in a game.

I don't like Oblivion for the leveling system, and haven't been able to play past level four no matter what I do for that one reason alone... so yeah.

Best thing to do is probably to see if you can get yourself the PC GOTY edition, and use a leveling mod on it. I did that, and wound up enjoying it for ten minutes more than usual.

As far as the difficulty goes, I had problems with that too. Eventually I just turned it down. There's really no way to play it at the default setting unless you are a munchkin extraordinaire who knows all the nasty tricks of the game (or at least, that's the feeling the game gives me.)

That quest always has trolls and ogres, regardless of difficulty.

I love it. The game is pretty cool. I started out as a thief, marksman, and light armor. Right now I'm replaying it and my character is at level 18. I found that close combat is a *****, and I survive much longer by using a bow.

Fallout 3 is a game where they improved everything. Except that fucking level cap. That made me mad.

I had a different problem, at level one (I didn't know how to level up for a little while XD) I found the "Butt rape" spell (I.E Fire storm) I was a spell warrior, and I could kill anything with 1 shot from this spell.

There's something wrong if I find that armor is pointless and run around butt naked shooting fire balls from my crotch (I then quickly leveled up to 20 on hard difficulty and nothing really changed.)

I thought the game was too easy, and I DL'ed mods just to make it harder >_>

Fire Storm is ****ing over powered and killed my first charecter as I had to restart but stay away from spells, in the fear of making my charecter an accidental god.

That was my approach. Playing as a sneaky guy with a bow? Make my custom class have a class skill in something like Heavy Armor, which I'll never use, and then pump points into being a sneaky bastard. You'll never need to level much since your skill in Heavy armor won't improve, and everything else, which you're using all the time, will gain massive points. Then go ahead and level up a bit.

Playing as a straight-out mage is probably one of the easiest routes, just get one of the signs that gives you a big boost to magic. After a while, you just don't run out even after repeated spamming of the same overpowered spell--and you can kill most stuff in one or two shots.

Playing this way, you also have more control over leveling. I find that it helps to work on leveling your NON-CLASS skills instead of your class skills at first. Alchemy and Blacksmithing are definitely worth the effort to raise (and DON'T TAKE THEM AS CLASS SKILLS or you'll wind up at level 10 with no combat ability). Poison your weapons. Use stealth.

Staying out of range of the enemies and nailing them with spells or arrows is much more effective than trying to beat them at the game of attrition chicken that is called melee. And don't just run randomly through the countryside for no reason, the random encounters aren't worth it. Hit the towns and do all the silly side-quests--you'll pick up bits of nice gear and cash here and there without leveling. Once you get up in level, start hitting Oblivion gates for loot. (You can sprint through without fighting stuff if you want, they don't chase you very efficiently and once you grab the sphere from the spire you get teleported out.)

Actually, I think those specific enemies are programmed into those spots in the game regardless of level. (one of the few times that happens) I know for a fact that there are three ogres that guard the unicorn and that is a deadric quest. Also, although I'm not as positive here, I believe that the cave is supposed to have the monsters as their presence is story related.

Best thing to do is work on leveling first. Make sure you build up your minor skills to build the multiplier before you work your major skills. Stop at about level 25 or so, there really is no reason to go beyond this. Oh, and magic rules the game.

I did this as well. I'd tag skills that I can control fairly easily, like armorer, acrobatics (just hop around to level it up), security, or any magic skills. Then I could level up when I felt like it. Block, athletics and weapon skills are a bit harder to control, so choose at your own level peril.

...or you could do what everyone else seems to suggest and just turn down the difficulty.

The problem I had with Oblivion was how finnicky it was. You were either overpowered or horribly underpowered. And when overpowered, it was usually in the defensive manner so battles just took longer and longer and longer...

In an open world RPG thats usually not a problem becuase you can go out seeking challenges on your ability level, but the scaling monsters and loot, tied to an illogical levelling system destroyed that without using a gameguide. And that reliance on a guide just to keep it playable plus the repetitive copypasta levels and general lack of an engrossing storyline removed any immersion.

I never had any such problems with Morrowind, and I'll admit that had weird levelling.

Ok, let me say this: The damn thing is int he fucking middle, default, medium. Are you seriously saying it needs to be lower in order to make the game easier to play?

You all seem to be missing the point, I'm not complaining about difficulty, I'm trying to ask people how do they manage to properly play the game without their character becoming too underpowered when compared to the enemies.

You know what the problem is? You really have to game the system to keep it from getting away from you (but hey---on the PC you just download something like KCAS and the problem's solved. I can't imagine trying to play Oblivion on a console.)

I don't know what to tell you. I played as an Orc, 360 version, with pretty much the same majors as you did and I had no problems. I even leveled up once I gained a level. I kept health potions handy, and sneaking up behind enemies and getting critical hits is essential, but I kept the difficultly bar at the default and it was fine. There were some hard areas earlier on with trolls, but that's when you turn your ass and run. You're not going to be able to kill everything early on. I'll need to play the PC version with some mods though, they turned Morrowind from a good game to an amazing game. Hopefully the same thing happened with Oblivion.

I agree with everything everyone has said about trying to play Oblivion on a console. Being able to bring up cheats and mod it up is the best thing about the game. The best mod is Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul.

However, SumuLord's link on efficient leveling is good, if you don't mind keeping track and doing a little dedicated leveling up. Choosing skills you don't use as your main skills is another good trick.

But I don't really get why anyone would play on a console. They get obsolete almost as fast as PCs these days, and the initial investment is starting to equalize as well.

I have the PS3 version, and the only advice I can offer to spellcasters is save up a LOT of money and pour it all into a massive damage/duration spell. My own personal favourite is a triple combo of Fire, Lightning and Ice, 12 damage 1 duration. For warriors, do the mage's guild quests up to the point where you unlock the enchantment podium, and put the same effects on your strongest weapon.
