Happy [sup]late[/sup] Birthday!!!

OT, I'm 17 and I had my first drink at.... 9 or something. I sneaked a bit of my dad's beer or whatever the hell he was drinking.

I tasted awful and since then, I've never wanted to drink and I refrain from doing so.
The same here(with a few differences).
1) My dad gave me to try it(although I didn't like it)
2) After my 18th birthday(the drinking age here is 18) I drank a few beers and vodka at almost every party, and not I enjoy it.

I mean I never got drunk or anything, my tastes changed. I now don't drink any soft drinks whatsoever and I enjoy the occasional beer/vodka once a month.

The thing I wanted to stress the most is that at first alcoholic beverages were a weird, new and not so noteworthy experience for me(just like kissing a girl). Then as I got older I started to enjoy them more. I wonder if this is a general feeling when experiencing something new.

Hello Escapist. As of a few minutes ago, my Birthday is officially over. I now have two questions for you.

#1- Did you wait until legal drinking age before having your first alcoholic beverage?

and

#2- What was your first drink?

Myself? Well, yes for the first question. I've waited until my 19th birthday before going drinking bitches.

As for my first drink? I haven't had one yet. My university friends and I are planning to go drinking tomorrow night and I plan to try Whiskey on the rocks first. I hear that is a classy drink for a gentleman to drink.

Anyway, your respective turns.
If you've never had a drink before, whiskey is guaranteed to end in tears!!

You will almost certainly think it tastes disgusting and if you stick with it, you will go at it too hard and puke everywhere.

Then you'll have your first hangover!
Do you have any suggestions?

Good luck with that. As a Whiskey drinker myself let me give you some advice. Be ready for the burn. Whiskey burns, if you get used to it you will come to love the flavour.

When you go in you're best off asking "Got any single malts" and having one of them for your first whiskey. Whiskey is made in a variety of ways and has different tastes accordingly.

Single malt, to me, is the smoothest. Not so much burn, great taste.
Blended has a lot more kick to it, and is cheaper (usually) than single malt.
There's a few others like pure malt and mixed but you don't normally come across them in pubs.

Also age is important, the older the smoother.

Although there are some good blends out there like Johnnie Walker you're still best getting a single malt.

Also if this is your first time drinking ever, have 1 or 2 and stop. You don't know your limits and getting utterly shitfaced when you're out and about for your first time is not fun.

Yes, that is a lot of information, I do it because I care.

OT:

Started drinking at 10ish, in my house, mildly of course.

First went out when I was 15, never been asked for ID once. First drink was Whiskey (surprise surprise)

In short, I have a high chance of liver damage and I like it.
Thanks for the advice! So I'll basically take it slow, order a single malt and drink it alternating with water. Does the burn just affect your throat and stomach or does it explode in your face?

If you fancy whiskey, go with whiskey, but it will burn and you may not like the taste.

Don't worry about not liking the taste, nobody likes the taste of alcohol when they first start. It's something you've got to learn to love.

I'd recommend to try Guinness or a nice Indian Pale Ale. They're smooth and certain IPAs can be quite fruity.

Enjoy the discovery.

I didn't wait, I was about 8 and had a glass of cider. This sounds bad but I have never been drunk, I haven't drunk in 3 years and the amount I have drunk in my entire life would maybe get somebody drunk, not even totaly wasted.

I can even list all the alcohol I have drunk and quantities.

My first drink was Cornish scrumpy (AKA cider).

3 years short of legal because i'm canadian
whisky from the bottle was my first drink
(drink that got me drunk)

I believe not drinking until you're eighteen is unnecessary and irrational, so long as you don't have some fucked ginetic disorder that kills you if you drink alcohol or a couple shots will make you kill the president

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

No, where I'm from (Scotland) that is seen as kinda of an achievement.

My first drink was a shot of sambooca, followed by 8 more.

I was 14.

In Saskatchewan it is an achievement too. I have refused free drinks probably over a dozen times.

I disagree. It was a very rational decision on my part. I wanted to prove to myself that I can resist peer pressure over a long period of time. After four years of constant offers by "friends" wanting to get me drunk, I've made it. I don't believe I'm not going to kill the prime minister after my first drink. Financially and psychologically it made sense for me to wait this long.

I had my first drink when I was 17, and it only took one can of beer to get me drunk.

Now that I'm 18 my parents let me drink whenever I want, but since I live in the US so I'm still legally underage.

Throat mostly, you don't notice it until it's at the back there or going down, it's a warming feeling but a lot of people get put off by it.

Also you won't love it straight away, drink it on a few occasions, it's a taste you have to work at.

1. No. 2. I assume some wine with my parents, but I may have accidentally gone to drink something that had vodka in it, thinking it was water, but that probably doesn't count since I would have spit it back out.

1. I actually started drinking alcohol (properly drinking, I mean) when I was around 14. I'm in the UK, so the legal age here is 18. But my parents were okay with it, I never drank in secret or stole drinks. I was basically given license to drink alcohol when they were around and could keep an eye on me, and usually just at things like parties with family friends and stuff (though when I was around 16 my dad did start letting me have a can of beer some nights when we were just staying in, again with some limits of course). So I was given some degree of freedom, but with slight limits. My parents are responsible, but fairly cool too :D.

2. My first drink? I honestly don't remember, it being around six years ago or so. Probably just lager though. Or possibly wine. One of those two, definitely, but I can't for the life of me remember which :p.
