Failed logic here.

3000 people took part in this survey.
1/5 British people think Light Sabers are real based upon this survey.

Britain has around 60 million people.
It is called random sampling. They are used in surveys all the time.
Which is fine, but it doesn't work if you try and then use those statistics to generalise an entire continent.
No, it works perfectly fine. Granted the number is a little small, but not enough so to completely discredit it. It is a survey, not a census.

Gotta agree with Legion here...it *doesnt* work... If they said 1/5 of britons in our survey believe in then fine - but it is claiming overall.

I agree with what a lot of other members have said though, be very hard to believe if this wasnt a lot of trolling. I mean for starters who is to say of that 3000 a large majority arent students themselves. We love to make stupid/funny results - its how we roll

I like how since this is British, everyone is obviously trolling.

If it were America, everyone participating would be an idiot and reflection of the entire population.

So, if this survey was done in America and had the same results, how much money would you be willing to bet that this thread would be less "Well, they were obviously joking" and more "HAHA LOOK AT THE DUMB AMERICANS GOD YOU'RE ALL SO STUPID"?
Good, somebody said it so I didn't have to. I would bet the "the Brits are just trolling" percentage of posters here overlaps with those who would totally believe that Americans would answer this seriously. I would bet, too, that many of the answers were trolling. But if something like that pops up for the U.S. I'd bet it would be like that too.

I can't stand the media today.

I'm thinking dubiously worded questions are to blame.

-Lightsabers do exist you can go into your local entertainers and buy one for your child.
-Hoverboards do exist it's just that they are air cushion ones rather than anti gravity
-Memory erasing technology does exist its called drugs, consult your local pharmacist/drug dealer

The gravity thing is probably trolling or an improperly worded question.

Also there is the fact that only a certain type of person responds to a survey so the result is for one fifth of that type of person and cannot be generalized.

If we Brits are handed surveys we never take them seriously; even our government sent census ones.
I have to agree with this poster. Having completed the survey myself (couldn't resist when I saw this topic! ) I can easily see how many of the questions can be misleading even without the intentional trolling that it causes.

Seriously, lightsabres DO exist. You can get 'em at nearly any toy store. Are they the REAL Star Wars lightsabres that cut through anything? No. But it's a lightsabre, says so on the box. I can easily see how many of the questions were misinterpreted based on poor wording.

The blame here goes squarely to the survey company / question designer.

Horribly worded questions -> Bullcrap survey.

However, 5% of Brits think Conan was a historical figure, while 11% believe Hitler was not. [http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/1066-and-all-that-how-hollywood-is-giving-britain-a-false-sense-of-history-756303.html]

(research was conducted in face-to-face interviews)

There are memory supressors, there are prototypes of vehicles that hover, lightsabers are theoretically possible. I'd say the line is blurred in reality.

While I want to go "Oh, those silly Brits." I just know Americans would do far worse in the percentages. Hell, we are dealing with people that think the Earth is only 6000 years old here.

Yeah I'm thinking this too. They probably just thought that lightsaber just meant they can make laser type weapons (they have made them but they're weak) rather than the actual lightsabers used in the Star Wars movies.

If this is true, I weep for mankind. It's probably just a large-scale joke, though. Hopefully.
it is a large scale joke. the only retards to believe that jedis do exist don't function in society due to mental problems and should be exempted from the census. luckily, this is the UK we're talking about, they're all intelligent people. now welcome to america, my home, where the retards run rampant and even hold jobs in office

Incredible, you managed to bash Americans in a thread about Britain. Color me shocked.

Man up, it's Britain's turn right now.

As an American, I reserve the right to bash my own country whenever I want!

I live in England and i couldn't care if 1 in 5 people around me did think lightsabers were real (Which is blatantly untrue, as I have a star wars style braid on the back of my head and nobody asks me where my lightsaber is - but that's besides the point).

Even so, it wouldn't mean im stupid just because 1 in 5 people around me are stupid, it would just mean I would have to educate the nice stupid people.

I really think this sort of thing just shows how so many people just shut off their brain if they are in a school of some sort.

3/5ths of british people (not britians) are also imigrants not from england at all. this is not true unless the servey was for 4 year olds or 1/5th of people in britian are to smart for it answering that because there are toys of lightsabers called "light sabers"!
