Breaking news: toothless hicks accidentally help create good publicity for DC by getting worked up over nothing.

"Remember, God invented genitals. But he NEVER EVER EVER EVER intended for duplicate pairs to touch. Especially imaginary pairs that exist entirely between folded sheets of paper & within the minds of comic geeks."

When did "family" become a euphemism for "uptight conservative killjoys"?
Early 00's
More like 1900's...
I didn't say which 00's ;).

But yes, Family is one of those words that almost never means anything positive when part of a groups name.

I'm surprised its not blackballed yet, it basically means racist/sexist/homophobic (which still feels like the wrong word for hating gay people, needs a stronger word).

Somewhat OT: A lot of people seem to be blaming this on religiousness. Please don't, religion is not the same as extremism. Some of us Christians are actually good people.
NAW-AW! CLEARLY religion is the source of all the world's war and evil and therefore we must have a giant war so we can kill all the religious people. [/sarcasm]
The problem actually stems from the belief that any religion is larger than the group speaking at any given moment.

There are as many types of christianity as their are christians. Same with any other faith. It's the false size bias that really gives organized religion its power, which is where the danger stems.

Southern Christian Conservative here:

There's no issue with a gay superhero. This whole "impressionable child" thing is ridiculous. If your child says that they want a boyfriend/girlfriend like whatever gay superhero, then guess what? Your child is simply gay. Get over it. Lord, this subjugating of homosexuals in society is getting old. First, we tell them that they can't marry because it'll "destroy straight marriage" or whatever. Now we can't have a gay superhero (EVEN THOUGHT THERE ARE PLENTY OF THEM, PEOPLE), because kids will "want to become gay"!

Wow, how completely close-minded.

*EDIT*

Hey, if we bring religion in on this (I'll focus on Christianity as the arguing point), this group is blasphemous (as women aren't allowed opinions, if you recall), and homosexuals should be stoned or lynched in the streets. So, too, should those who support them, and the comic creators.

Also funny that they whine about 'brainwashing' and 'indoctrination' yet force their children into church every week.
As a raised-catholic, I found this hilarious.

OffT: One Million Moms have about 33,000 members. This is a science fact, and highly amusing.
OT: One Million Moms is silly and no one should take them seriously.

By your own logic, Christianity isn't an "organized religion", the different sects of Christianity are. So really, it's the lobbying groups that supposedly represent multiple religions and sects that present the threat.

The false size bias is a general problem for any group, not just religious groups. The vocal minority are almost always more radical than the silent majority. The same thing goes for liberals. I'm willing to bet that many democrats don't really care all that much about gay-marriage or affirmative action so much as they see republicans as a bunch of war-mongering crooks who want to deregulate everything so their corporate buddies can ransack America. When there are multiple issues at stake, you cannot assume that Americans support all the issues that a candidate supports just because they vote for them.

At any rate, I'm not sure a false size bias is that much of a threat unless the vocal minority actually gets into power. And the only way the vocal minority gets into power is if the majority is either self-destructively apathetic or downright complicit (at which point the "minority" isn't really a minority). So really they can only have as much power as you let them. (In a democracy, of course.) However, the game changes if the minority has money. When you have money size doesn't matter all that much.

And my parents still wonder why i hate religious people.
I'm sure someone else has already quoted you on this (you are on the first page and this is a 12 page topic) but that's not really fair. Hating religious people for something a small minority of one religion does is just as closed minded and bigoted as what the people mentioned in this article are doing.

And no, I'm not religious. Just seems odd and a little hypocritical to have an automatic hate of anyone who has a religious belief.

And on topic, this doesn't shock me. Honestly, I kinda blame DC for this. Marvel has had a lot of great gay characters (Shatterstar and Richtor from X-Factor have been awesome, and I've been reading Avenger's Academy) if DC hadn't made this some giant announcement and just weaved it into their comics with no fuss, these OMM people probably wouldn't even know about it in the first place.

I actually think it'd be better for both the industry and the society if we could just have a character announce he's gay without them making some giant announcement teasing it.

I mean what sounds better? Someone with a megaphone shouting that a character is going to be gay, stay tuned to find out who as a way to get attention and sales, or just reading the books you love and finding out about it the same way you'd find out any other story point?

The Christian Right is neither.

Personally, I have no problem with gay people, I have a number of gay friends of both sex.
However, I kind of feel that DC is being rather cynical and exploitative about this whole situation and making an "iconic" hero gay just screams at a publicity stunt in the same way that the suggestions that the next Doctor Who be a woman.

Still, as long as they stick with it and don't just reboot the character and remove his gay in 6 months time, it's a step forward

I'm probably not the first to tell you this, but I'm not checking 12 pages, but it's pseudonym. Not euphemism, which is generally more sex related.

What is with people that undergo a completely illogical hormone induced rampage known as giving birth that makes them think that they;
a)Suddenly have the right to drive massive SUVs and intimidate everybody in traffic because they don't look when merging and speed in general
b)Believe themselves to be an expert on everything
c)Take personal offense at everything they don't like that is somehow related to children
d) and that's all I have for now

Yeah so they are out of their damn minds but nowadays even the less vocal group this side (our) of sanity and ignorance get's their word out in one way or another so hopefully they get denied and are given the most calmly insulting comeback ever,

Nope.

A pseudonym is a fake name for a person, usually an author.

A euphemism is a word substituted for another one that is considered too blunt or harsh. It does not necessarily relate to sex.

You may have been thinking of "synonym". That means a word that has the same meaning as another word.

I'm just gonna throw this out there: Both DC and Marvel have and have had gay or lesbian superheroes in the past.

Just in DC right the fuck now you have Apollo and Midnighter from Stormwatch and you have Bunker in the rebooted ]Teen Titans. Which is a series more aimed towards younger audiences than other books would be.

And you know many people have decided they'd like to be gay because those characters are? Fucking NOBODY because if you were in any way sane or rational you'd realise that human sexuality doesn't fucking work that way. If external media could influence people's sexuality, I'm pretty sure the billions upon billions of straight characters in EVERY form of entertainment media would balance out a few gay superheroes!

Why are so many scared of "exposing" children to *gasp* the concept that gay people exist.

"Hey mom... i'm heading over to Brain to smoke some weed"

"you go right ahead honey.... but I forbid you to cross the street... I heard the people there have a *scream* gay child"

The state of california today placed an entire naighbourhood under quarantine. Government officials have announced that traces of hazardous gayness has been detected around the area, and advice all citizens to remain inddor untill the crisis is over.

and batman is a billionare playboy.
Which is exactly why batman would actually be the perfect gay man. He uses his access to money and fast women to never stop thinking about his sexual identity, which leads to an endless string of 'beards'. He's never able to love them, they're only something to stick his dick in. They wouldn't have to change anything about the character. He was just so far back in the closet that he could actually visit Narnia.

On topic: not to insult any homosexuals but "one million moms" is pretty much the gayest shit I've ever seen because turning their kids into indecisive, hateful momma's boys, unable to stand their own ground and unable to formulate their own thoughts because their moms did the thinking for them is SO much better than having them "exposed" to homosexuality. I hope the kids got their intelligence from their dads instead.

Plus, this whole thing is so sexist. What about one-dimensional, dumbass bigoted DADS?

Oh extremist conservative Christians... is there anything you don't hate?

I find it funny that they believe a gay super hero will "brainwash" their children. If your child is that impressionable, he was probably already thinking about it.
Also funny that they whine about 'brainwashing' and 'indoctrination' yet force their children into church every week.
Nu-uh! Church is healthy fostering of a young mind! It's simply providing good care for your children!

(Or so the argument might follow. Then you realize that everything done to you from you were born up to this day, be it by media, your parents, friends, what-no, is effectively brainwashing if you apply such a broad term to it. So in order to actually save the term from being too general to ever use, perhaps we should stipulate that it has to be done with "malicious intent", or similar?)
