^^Sorry to dissapoint you, but virtual reality can never mimic real life, or have the budget for it.

Crysis - it doesn't look half as pretty as anyone says

One of these is real life. The other one is Crysis. Pick which is which.

It's not impossible, but there's no way in hell you can do it at a glance.

Left one is crysis? The picture is a bit sharp, The grass has no deviation, and the shadows arn't on par as much as I would hope. The moutains are meh not enough AA, and the gates not beat up when the rest of the house looks it.
Alright, that's as good as any game has ever looked. This looks better than all of the upcoming games, also - so I'll ask again, what do you think looks better than Crysis? The only game that looks remotely as good is Far Cry 2, but even that isn't quite up to the standard Crysis set.
Think about this, Crysis can have the worlds' greatest graphics, but did that make it the worlds greatest game?
that goes to deus ex, hands down, no contest. however, crysis was a great fps (not the best by any means and it has a ton of problems, but the fact that ive gone through the first 7 levels about 3 dozen times without getting bored says something now doesent it?). its a lot deeper in terms of gameplay mechanics and the fact that your free to do things however you see fit, a notion that many shooter developers feel they are too good to include *looks at infinity ward*. its not the best game ever by a long shot, but it is one of the best shooters to come out in a long time in my opinion (and ive been a heavy shooter fan since quake 2).

on the mgs note, the orginal is my second favorite game of all time (guess what the first is, go on, guess). that being said i had hopes for 4 that it would deviate from many of the problems that plagued 3, however this was not the case for the most part. and for the record i did NOT assault you. assaulting you would be calling you a stupid git and saying that your an idiot (this is an example), all i said was bullshit it did, there is a difference. as someone said, you cant argue facts (well, actually you can, espically since so many "facts" are either false or really just somebodys opinion, but thats another argument).

you want to talk about a game that didnt live up to the hype,E.T. on the atari 2600. With one fail swipe it killed one of the leaders at the time. What other game was so bad they drove the inventory out to the desert and buried it like it was he spawn of satan.
Damn. You got everyone there. Saying the game was okay would be an overhype of ungodly porportions.

The only way to over-hype a game is for the hype to cause less people to buy it.

I think that the only game which could have done this is Halo 3, the most hyped game ever. They built a wax statue of Master Chief and a miniature battlefield for that game, came out with a special Mountain Dew flavor (the only one I like by the way) and made specially skined Doritos bags and slushie cups.

Of course, since I'm of the crowd that counts the Halo series as one of gaming's all time best I just think it's great that a video game could be worth so much effort.

oh, and sorry, forgot this in my above post (meant to put it but literally forgot by the time i got to the end of the post), but to whoever said that crysis is the best looking game even when compared to upcoming games:

Alan Wake. and to a lesser extent (since its fate is pretty up in the air), project offset.

3. The Orange box- Besides Portal (which was a one time round sort of game in my opinion) this game was not worth the £50 I paid for it.
5 of the most critically acclaimed first person games ever made, it was a damn bargin.

£50? I got mine for £25 new so you must have got ripped off.
Most critically acclaimed yes, but it failed to deliver, frankly...Half Life wasn't that great and that made up over half of the compilation so I'm very well justified when I state that it was over hyped. Not bargain material.

And I did get it for £50....considering how bland it was you're right, I was ripped off.

Well, as far as over-hyped games go, I think Halo 3 takes the cake, but I know people are chanting that all over this thread, so I'm gonna go with my runner up, Bioshock. Yes, Bioshock was a great game. in fact I'm playing over again as we speak, but it was heralded as the "Best FPS of 2007" and it got GOTY of almost every game reviewer from here to Pluto. However, it was not the FPS/RPG hybrid that it claimed to be. The only RPG element was that you could pick what Plasmids you could have. Whee. Sure it's fun, but I think System Shock 2 had more RPG elements that Bioshock. Of course, I think it's still really fun and all, I just didn't think it lived up to the hype.

stalker has more rpg elements than bioshock, and seeing as stalker is pretty much a straight up shooter thats saying something.

Halo 3 (Which I liked btw), Gears of war (Flips off), Assassin's ball sucking Creed; I want to talk about that one, I got this for Christmas, Excited as hell, Ready for some kick arse running around on the rooftops assassination action, And it turned out instead to be (and let me borrow a phrase here) more like 'Faffing about' Creed, And if you say that you liked it I honestly don't care.
Oh and last one, Sonic the Hedgehog 2006. I think you can guess right now that I don't listen to reviews (or at least I didn't back then) because I want to be my own Judge on the game, And like a stupid little lamb to a kebab shop, From the first trailer, I was suckered into thinking that "OS'sG! Sonic's back and It's gonna be awesome!!!" -_- Never again. In my opinion; WORST GAME EVER. And I'm not counting games that were made before the year 2000, Or ones I haven't played but everyone says suck.

personally, i think the entire halo series is over hyped. i mean, they're alright games, but they're glitchy, the story is meh, as are graphics (3's an improvement, but not by much). the game play was... okay. characters and enemies were interesting, but then again they were interesting when Metroid Prime and Half-life had them. it's an average series at best, and a worthless rip-off of better titles with better stories, graphics, and design at worst.
assassin's creed...was Prince of Persia, sands of time with more people. over hyped.
Gears of War was, like Halo, alright. that's it. it was a fun, if repetitive, run of the mill third person shooter with amped up graphics and violence. fun for a bit, but then i felt like i was playing Halo.
what else, what else...
Mario games! i honestly do understand why Mario games are popular, it was one of the first game series, but SMG was only fun and new and exciting for about 50 stars, and then you get bored out of your mind. and if i have to hear about an upcoming game with the words "yoshi's" and "island" in the title, i'll kill as many people as i can get my hands on before the cyanide pill under my tongue takes effect.
Devil May Cry, possibly the most stereotypical "anime" game of all time. sure it isn't based on an anime, but for goodness sake, the protagonist is a and i quote "mysterious white haired dream-boat who wields a sword as long as his body is tall", who turns out to be the son of someone really important. christ above, he even has a long-lost brother.
super smash bros., a good series, but one over which too many fans circle-jerk. it's fun, it's just not THAT fun.
can't think of any more at the momment, maybe i'll make another post later.

I thought that the idea with something being 'too-whatever' or 'over-blah' was that it's automatically a bad thing.

Anyway.

The big one here is, of course, Fable. If you go about calling your game "the best RPG ever", prepare to be shot down.

For Fucks Sake I am sure this thread has been made before. This'll likely be locked in short order.
SO why do people keep locking threads just because they've been done before sometimes the old threads get too long to know whats happening in them or (most of the time) I'm too lazy to use the stupid badly designed search system (no offense) and most people don't know that the old threads existed and why even get your knickers in a twist for something so insignificant in the first place.

halo series., World of warcraft, assassins creed, GTA, smashbros, a few of the others here mentioned i havent palyed so i can't rly say. but yea.. basically cause the majority choice doesn't make a good game, they just don't know any better. Sure groundbreaking i suppose in someway or another, but they're far from perfect tens or 9's.

Now if I could just get Guilty Gear XX Accent Core online or even a fancy new Guilty Gear I'll be happy. Although I don't think they've got the heart to stick to the naming conventions and actually call it Guilty Gear XXX.
I would SO play Guilty Gear XXX....... What? I mean it, I'd love to see a new Guilty Gear....

Fine. I wanna see Millia naked as well. Mmm... naughty thoughts. *makes creepy noises*

If they did make a new Guilty Gear, it'd better be fucking NEW this time, that's all I got to say.

Anywho, on to the topic.

Halo 3 = overrated. Still good, but not a reason for living like some people seem to percieve it.

And the Wii.... oh god, how over rated. I don't even believe it's selling so well, mine's just sitting there on my TV, doing NOTHING to earn its keep.

You need to get a job Wii, you lazy *****.

The Halo series in general. Way too much hype.

I also agree on Smash Brothers series. The original was addicting, and Melee hit that system on the nose... but Brawl? Meh. Of course this also extends to other Nintendo franchises.

Letsee what else... Gears of War 2 and Resistance 2 upcoming, and likely to be over hyped. Both originals were excellent, although not a big fan of OTS Stop and Pop fighting.

I see no one puts any stock in my idea that the only way to over-hype a game is to make less people buy it.

Everyone just keeps saying "Halo was overhyped because it wasn't that good."

Well not everyone, everyone who won't read this though.

well, i dont really get your argument. if you overhype something, youre giving it more recognition than it deserves. how would that lead to less people buying it?
and of course people say "Halo was overhyped because it wasn't that good." it wasn't as good as all that publicity made it out to be, thus overhyped.
