Does anyone here think it might be a little extreme to suggest a new forum for the kinds of things Isaac is talking about? Clearly, quick-fix threads in which drawn out, intellectual discussion isn't the primary goal are growing more popular. It might help the situation to draw a line of distinction between actually conversation topics and just random postings.

They could call it "The Padded Cell" or something. I don't know.
Hmm... Interesting idea, and it would be a quick fix, but I'm not sure it's something the staff would go for.

General Discussion is meant for things non-descriptive topics as a whole, and I will admit the line between legitimacy and redundancy is blurry and full of holes at best.

fine but whose going to actually post there, when you can get a bigger and better response by posting your vapid threads in the offtopic?
Ideally, if there were a forum specifically for topics that don't provide conversation, any vapid threads that got posted in the off-topic would be either locked or moved within the first few minutes of their posting.

necro, ordinarily id agree with you, but these days its just absurd, i havent posted in a topic for about 3 weeks until today. its getting to the point where 95% of threads suck and its hard to find one with a worthwhile point. its not like before when we had the occasional troll like gems or the troll of trolls MGG, its daily here and no one says anything to correct them. mods arent doing much either TBH.

I doubt it would be a smooth transition, but I think over time, one would be able to see the difference between the two forums. If you want to discuss the moral implications of religion and government acting as one, you go to the off-topic forum. If you'd rather post your favorite tv show, you go to the Padded Cell.

No telling if that's how it would really pan out, though. Just a thought.

If you don't want to read the "empty" threads then don't. If you're on the internet it can't honestly hurt you to scroll down or even click, "page 2" just to find a decent thread.
Chances are, you can tell if a thread will be worth your time by the title. It's not truly that difficult to weed out your preferences. If you seriously have such a huge problem with the way the board is going, (and I know where you're coming from with the thread) then you just need to stop coming. Change is inevitable. The drek will come in, and it will pass. Live with it for a while. It'll be gone by weeks end.
I understand that much, and don't typically read the fluff that turns up believe me. I'm concerned about the little guy, the threads that never get a chance because a majority of people don't take the time to look at a thread near the bottom of the the first page because seven or so baseless topics have pushed it and everything else down. I over exaggerate I'm sure, but I know it happens.

And why should I leave? Why throw in the towel and give up instead of at least standing up and saying something first? This mentality of "Don't like it? Then leave." Is something that's always bothered me, not just here but everywhere. Though I agree with freedom of speech and what not, and that if you don't like something, then don't read/watch/listen to it, that's where I draw the line. I'll at least speak out about a change in something before i completely up and quit.

there's no need for you to troll every thread you post in.
I do apologise profusely to the OP for bringing this up.
But this made me laugh so very hard.

Anyway back on topic.

You're right for the most part OP.

I would reccomend to any newcomers that they take the time to lurk for a month before joining, you learn the way the forum works and when you do join no-one barks at you for double posting, not knowing how to edit or any other newbie related humbuggery.

Also I really wish there was a minimum amount of posts you have made before you can create threads, and being on Probation should also stop you from being able to create them.
But that's not entirely fair to the more intelligent new members.
But that probation-no creating threads rule would be a good idea.

Thank you... I completely agree with you about the threads that are full of fail that have been poping up recently...

I hope that newbies here take this rant to heart

Christ you lot, you need to cut this shit out. I agree with Isaac, this place has lost it. While it was once a safe haven from the Internet, multiple people have turned it into there personal play ground, where you have no consideration for the forum as a whole and only care about entertaining yourselves.

Take the FAQ you thread for example. While that thread has "Ask a Question" at it's source, the thread is mostly "talk about what you want" (looking at a page, any page, will show this). The FAQ you thread has no real substance or meaning behind it, it's what I would think of as an MSN conversation. You're all just babbling on about whatever you want and most of the time, what you want to talk about is crap. This crap spills over to other threads. When people start treating a single thread like an MSN conversation, then you start treating other threads like an MSN conversation, and then you start to destroy other threads. This shit happened before (Do any of you remember the duck thread? Or maybe the Ask a Girl thread? Or even the Random battle RP's that showed up?) and I was hopping that many of you would have learned your lessons but I suppose I was wrong. Back on topic however, this website, this community, isn't your personal play ground.

A few of you, and you know who you are, treat it like it is and while you may get a kick out of it, the rest of us sit here and suffer because we have to read your Annoying, pointless and plain idiotic chat room-Esq conversations. This sort of conversations turn this forum from an intelligent gaming forum to something below 4chan. Thats right, bellow mother fucking 4chan. Do you really think that if four of you went on 4chan and just started having a conversation between yourselves similar to what you do now, they'll stand for it? I really doubt that they will. Hell, at least the chans have some sort of order.

As for the badge collectors and the pointless topics; while they do make less than intelligent threads, at least they do add some intelligent discourse to the forum. That abortion thread for example, started out as a disgrace but others added their opinions and some content and from there a discussion/debate could grow. While I would like for the OP to have more substance so that the argument doesn't start on page three at least there is some intelligent discussion going on.

I, in no way, feel that the moderators have been failing to do their job in anyway. This is a big site, one only growing in popularity, and it's hard enough for them to keep things civil and clean normally, and if anything I sympathize and commend them.

All, awesome, if not hard to implement ideas.

This is exactly what I was trying to say about the inside-joke threads, worded much more elegantly. Again, the PM system is in place for a reason.

SH! I'm trying to be the voice of optimism. You're totally harshin' my styles.

Anyway, the problem is that the moderation isn't as strict anymore. Case and point: Am I the only person who misses Joe?
No... this place started going to hell right after Joe left

which, cooincidentally, was about a week after I joined...

There's no connection at all I tell you! none!!!

So I've got some consensus it seems, and I'm not completely out in left field. But what do we do now? Do we really sit back and let it happen or is there something, anything that we can do to turn this issue around, and prevent it from starting again? Or is THAT just a silly dream?

what we need is to organize the mods. we need real action and that means locking baning etc.

We take action into our own hands

"men... ready your allmighty report buttons, we shall flood the Mods Reported posts queue with so many mindless posts that they will have to make purplerain and Mobius Mods just to get them all under controll"

then phase one will be complete...

ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY. necro is right too, but i think that we should start just report all the dumb threads we see, not just the insulting stuff. we need to take it into our own hands. dont instigate, just press report and dont comment at all, unless its advising on a better course of action, like search button or what not.
