A coalition in the works, what on earth did I start? I pray that reporting and ignorance of these threads is enough to deter them, but I have a feeling it isn't, and we can't just ignore a problem forever

We take action into our own hands

"men... ready your allmighty report buttons, we shall flood the Mods Reported posts queue with so many mindless posts that they will have to make purplerain and Mobius Mods just to get them all under controll"

then phase one will be complete...
Pretty right, I joined here so I didn't have to put up with all the junk that goes on most everywhere. And I did lurk around for about two weeks before I joined.

Being a mere member and not a moderator, your don't ignore the problems. Report and PM. That is all you are capable of doing, that is all you need to do. If the problem goes unsolved, then ignore it.
Of course, I know that much. Modding on a board in the past I relied on pm's to do my job for the most part.

Right now? Nothing more than reporting and avoiding the encouragement of these threads is all we can do. If they continue to be a problem, then perhaps an open letter to the staff, but i doubt such a drastic measure needs to be taken.

EDIT: I'm NOT trying to start a revolt, I'm simply questioning everyones current behavior towards an issue and asking that it be addressed by us personally. We report and ignore, and avoid encouragement, that's all we can do, and that's all we should do! Nothing drastic, and as Necro said, no conspiracy people.

NO! No conspiracy people. Think about what you are doing. Report, and PM mods. That is how you deal with the problem.
Exactly. Josh and sarge, you guys are suggesting to fight other users with the mods as your weapons. Its as if you are suggesting to take over these forums and make them your own. I hope that this isn't what you want.

Yes, I don't want to get blamed for a revolt I never meant to start.

I see my paranoia remains well-founded.

no you misunderstand me, which isnt surprising, text is hardly the ideal medium for tone and conversation. anyway what i meant was that perhaps we need to start reporting a lot more, or write all the mods, or something, i just want intelligent topics to return.

I have to agree with Fire Daemon - the amount of attention-whoring is getting absurd. OK, yes, I can ignore (the deluge of) them, but when they start invading other threads, that's where it becomes a problem. It also seems to be getting a bit clique-ish, with a coterie of special snowflakes popping up all over the place on the off chance that there might be a sentence or two of ego-wanking they are missing somewhere. Wading through crap threads is one thing. Wading through crap in threads is another. It's the equivalent of having a phone conversation in a movie theater. Take it outside.

EDIT: And give the mods half a break folks. They are the ones who HAVE to read all the crap we are bitching about, and the worse the problem gets, the harder time they have keeping up. I know some of them would love to give this place a banhammer beat-down, but that just doesn't work with a community that is growing as fast as the Escapist is. I came on board during the Golden Era of Joe the Mod, but we seem to forget that a lot of the beat downs weren't handed out by him, they were handed out by us, sometimes in threads like this where we called people on their shit. It can be done without trolling and without feeding the trolls. Yeah, report, PM, you know the drill.

Here's the thing...

Idiotic and pointless topics to one person can seem legitimate and valid to another. Furthermore, a topic that can start out as baseless, and horrid, can easily be turned into a very in depth discussion, the Abortion thread as an example that Fire Daemon pointed out.

Where do we draw the line exactly? Do we snatch away life from a potentially decent topic just because the OP's a blundering idiot?

no. its as simple as that. a decent topic, is a decent topic, still worth discussing even if the guy who brings it up is an idiot

So... we take some random mindless thread and make it an intelligent and meaningfull discussion?

Would'nt that just push OP chowderhead into making another thread of the same manor?
