I'm glad I will finally have a legitimate use for my 3DS, but I'm sad they are moving away from sprites.

I'm eagerly awaiting Pokemon Z, and eventually x^2 y^2 z^2, and then Pokemon 1, 2 and three, then Pokemon A Minor, B Major and C flat.

I think it's a step in the right direction for Nintendo and Japan as an internationally conscious market, regardless of the quality of the game and designs.

As for those, I'll get used to them any which way.

Are there actually any other new pokemon apart from the 3 starters and the two legendaries? Because that footage didn't show any other pokemon apart from them at all. Mind you, if they didn't introduce another 100 I'd be mighty pleased with that. I'm just wondering.
They always only show the starters first. But by rule of thumb: New Gen = New critters.

Edit: The footage also shows the new legendaries.
I see, well ... it should be alright I suppose. Can't say the water type starter looks appealing but I still feel optimistic about this one.

I also gotta say I am not digging the design of the player character at all, hopefully the female main character is better. This is a small complaint and would in no way be a deal breaker for me, it is just something that I noticed.

uh its an rpg rpgs have pretty much been the same for, well forever. you go thre for presentation and strategy
it would break the game, end of story

if they wanted to do a s pokemon fight spin off thing fine, but i play pokemon to play and rpg, you gotta realize when what you want doesn't gel whit what everyone wants
Right, so I'm not sure if you're confused with the term 'rpg' vs 'turn-based' rpg. If you actually mean rpgs have always been the same, I would say: what about Mass Effect (or KOTOR or Dragon Age) or other games that are RPG's but they are not turn based? There are action rpg's out there. RPG does not mean turn-based. It's a role-playing game, so usually this means you are the character, unlike games like Halo or Mario where you play as Mario and Halo (Mario Rpg is sort of an interesting mix of the two...) So there is no reason the game I'm proposing couldn't be an RPG

That's fine, but you also have to realize that everyone may not want what you want! Most of the people I've talked to (previous to this thread anyways it seems haha) thought that pokemon is getting a bit stale as of late. I admit, everyone may not like my ideas, but I know I would get roped back into pokemon if I saw a different kind of game come out in the franchise.

i agree with a lot of this point, and nintendo definitely has the funding for it.

i dont think it should be completely moved to console though. i think an amazing 3D world combining all the regions into one massive adventure would be amazing, and have DLCs to add the new gens when they appear, and integrate a system to link with the handheld games too, but i also think keep it on handheld too. it has always been the only game series i have liked for DS (evident by not noticing when the counter of time played on save menu leapt from 52 hours after 3rd time beating champion to 1300ish hours), and without it, i would be very bored, as my life takes me on A LOT of travelling with nothing to do on the road.

i think a controllable battle situation would be very useful on maybe a computer or console based version, but there is a reason they never moved to it from turn by turn (apart from the actual concept of way easier to program). With each generation, the online features become more and more necessary, and from observing the trend of games also utilizing online in the same way, eventually the game will not even have a single player. Battling is a main part of this, and with the battling of people all over the world, a lag of up to several seconds can happen, and in a mode where you can control pokemon, servers would have a lot of trouble working out damage etc, because one person in england may dodge to the right and use hyper beam. on their display this hits a korean player in the face, however, the korean player has just dug underground, so on their screen, the english has just finished dodging. servers then compete as to which event happened, the hit or the dig, ending in a crash and a lot of complaints.

i do think the core mechanics could be given space to move and change, but with change comes hate. for example, my friend only started playing pokemon a couple of weeks ago, and he is still trying to perfect his style of game and strategy(mine is speed and power, but at the cost of low PP), whereas he just uses his highest levels. with a new combat system, all players would have to completely rethink their battle style, and i know i would hate that, because i would often come up against players who would dodge me down to low PP, meaning id have to change my strategy to high pp fast hit moves, as well as a lot of others too, meaning teams and battle styles would eventually become identical.

I just want a reason for why the developer can't change the rules. Sure, the current ones work, but they've been done to death. What's so bad about wanting a new system that is in keeping with the spirit of the old?
i believe this is two of many good reasons, although i do agree that i wish there was more difference in me using ice beam 15 times in a row and getting the same message and animation "glaceon used ice beam. its super effective!" and statistically, once every 30 times used, "its a critical hit!" and once every 40, "**wild pokemon** is frozen!".

SkarKrow said:
I suppose that the system could be boring but there's a hell of a lot of depth allowed by it being turn based and it functions as more of a strategy game once you start to get into the competitive side of it, it can be tense and very exciting, part of the problem with it being boring, at least in game, is that the games are pitifully easy these days. I can accept that it's an acquired taste though, maybe take a look into the competitive battling scene and you'll get why it's still turn based maybe. It really is one of the deepest experiences going in gaming once you dive into competitive battling and start raising your own monsters for perfection, I was a bit burnt out on the series myself after Gen 4 but Gen 5 provided some nice ways to ease up competitive breeding (such as making natures easier to pass down, making IV items easier to acquire and giving "hotspots\" for EV training) and that actually got me to breeding and raising my own creatures selectively to compete and breathed a lot more life into it for me.

The third person controlling the pokemon thing might be best kept to a spin-off while the main series maintains the classic gameplay and refines it further, but it could be interesting, there's definately room for both kinds of gameplay.
As for putting it on a console, why would they, it's their system moving franchise and has been since it debuted, it's also a great game to take on the move and I love to play it on long journeys on public transport or in bed when i just can't be bothered to focus on the TV or my PC.

Oh and I loathe and detest Shadow of the Colossus, it is to this date the only game I have EVER returned to the store.
You two seem to have similar points a bit (and I don't like writing too much if I can help it haha) so I'll sort of combine answers:

First of all with moving to consoles, I think (though I'm not sure) could open up more options for gameplay (plus possibly better graphics although that's not wholly important). I would think that console games have more space for programming and that could help a ton. Also, if you guys remember Pokemon stadium games (the first two), they were really cool, despite being cut-down versions of the gb games. I bet that putting on consoles would be helpful.

I do agree that spinoffs may be a good place to start with this too, but anyways.

As to the multi-player lag issue, what about games like Halo and COD (NOT that I am saying the games should be like either of them), they run online and are fast-paced and they work well (yes laggy, but still). And I could see a competitive nature with these games as well, but yeah, it may be less strategy and more skill, but hey, I think this could draw in a bigger crowd of gamers.

Not sure if I answered everything, but anyways: If you like the newer games, kudos to you guys. As I said before though, I started with Gen 1 and still love the concept of Pokemon, but enough is enough for me at this point of the same system. I just wish there was something new for me to get into but oh well C'est la vie I suppose. It's nice to dream =P

I for one am bloody excited for it, those animations look awesome and it's about time they stopped using sprites.
I've always found the sprites to be charming. Despite that, I'm looking forward to a new aesthetic.

OT: Yeah, I'm excited as all hell. Froakie looks bitchin'. And some changes to the meta are always welcome.

Wheee, I'm so excited for these games! So far I like everything I see, including the legendaries - this is the first time I've liked the featured legendaries since Gold &Silver.

My only problem is that I can't decide which starter to get - the fox and the frog are both so cute! I guess it'll depend on which one my sister wants.

Wait, why the fuck is variety a bad thing?

Would you honestly really be content if there was never a sequel with new pokemon ever again?

Eugh... I just... I will never understand why people complain about new games having new pokemon. I mean, the huge variety of monsters to choose from is huge for the game's mass-market appeal. Not to mention new pokemon sell games. It's unrealistic to expect a new gen not to have new pokemon.

Subjectively I find the Fox to be the best option.

But I don't pick the best option.

I pick the most unloved and dorky ones.

I non-ironically loved Mudkip.

Okay, if that's your method for picking starters then that's understandable. However, Mudkip is truly the Chuck Norris of the Pokemon universe.

Wow it actually looks really good.

I'm glad the Fire Starter is a fox (or something). I normally always choose the Fire Starter but I didn't in the last gen because I don't like pigs... At least I got a grass snake though.

Actually really excited now XD
For a guy with a pokemon for an avatar, I didn't think you'd use the word 'actually' ...twice.

On gameplay innovation: honestly, I'm fine with the core gameplay being the same, because every generation, they inroduce new moves, new Abilities, and polish and rebalance he ones that exist.

They also make training viable teams a hell of a lot easier. It was never easier to breed and train up a team than it was in Black and White 2. Get the right nature every time using an Everstone, EV train by feeding your Pokemon cakes and giving them haircuts, and send them to the dojo for about 10 free levels a day.

But what I really like is seeing new attacks, and new Abilities, and seeing how they all interact with the stuff that came before. It's like Magic he Gathering, really. At its core, it has the same gameplay formula it's had since 1990, but there are so many new tricks and powers that interact with each other in new ways that saying it hasn't innovated or expanded is like judging a flowering cherry tree for its roots, because they haven't grown out much this year.

As to the starters, I'mm interested in the fire fox whose name I still can't remember. I'm not worreid that it'll be a retread of Ninetales, because c'mon. There are so many magical foxes in mythology (not just Japanese myth, either) other than the nine-tailed kitsune. maybe it'll resemble the trickser Renard. Or a tube fox.

Looking at the trailer, we see two moves from each starter. I like to imagine this could be a hint towards their ultimae typing. The fox does Flamethrower, and then some move with purple waves. That could either be a weird animation for Growl, or perhaps Confusion or something. The frog does Water Gun, then some quick roughing-up move in close quarters. Possibly Quick Attack? Probably not Fury Swipes, bu maybe even Close Combat. And the hat thing has Solarbeam, and something that could be resonably argued to either be Aerial Ace, or Pursuit.

I'm pretty freaking stoked for this but I have one request.

For fucks sake Gamefreak speed up the fucking pace of the game please. Every goddamn action in Black and White 2 happens so goddamn slowly. It's just so fucking infuriating slow. Because of this I play Pokemon games almost exclusively on emulators so I can speed up the pace. Also get rid of the bloody overly long tutorials. We are not idiots and can figure out the damn game ourselves.

Must have Fennekin! Glad I'm not part of the group of people who play Pokemon to actually 'catch 'em all'.
