It is perfectly understandable. Maybe not the best course of action, as you would think a 10 year old would not be exceptionally difficult to restrain. However, if her mother had to call the police, and she attacked a police officer, it is perfectly justifiable. That's what stun guns are for, to ensure the safety of the police and public without any long term affects.
I am pretty sure it is more effective at discipline than a smack an the ass too =P. (that last bit's a joke, I would think it obvious, but you never know.)

I didnt read the story but Im pretty sure this is the one where the mom gave permission and it was supposedly a brief stun. A little overkill on the cops, they should have just picked her up

Also, if she was mentally ill, then her mother should have gotten her some professional help before it got to the point of having to call the police.

Well seeing as how she was actually being taken in to custody and is being charged, they had every right to subdue her such that they could do their job. Someone's age should never give them special privileges.

What a load of crap. Being kicked in the nuts does not give you the right to taser (because stun gunned sounds stupid) a 10 year old, really just try that excuses your self. It would not hold up for a normal person and it should not hold up for the police. Being a police officer does not suddenly mean you have the right to react violently to a child and using a stun gun is a violent reaction.

The fact the officer was attempting to arrest some one for not taking a shower is stupid enough. Wasting police time is an offence that officer should be facing too as this whole incident was waist of time from the beginning.

its assault on a police officer. the legal system doesn't CARE about your gender, age, or ethnicity. if a police officer is attacked, it doesn't matter if its a child or a gangbanger, they will be taken down with all the force needed. if she gave up with no attacks or incidents then stun guns are uncalled for, but she attacked a cop, allowing stun guns to be used.

The legal system very much cares about your age. Children can not legally be treated the same way as adults, though the US does have some pretty low standards for a western country in this regard. Being a police officer should not give you the right to do what ever you feel like, neither does it make all your actions correct.

That and any force necessary? This is a cop and a 10 year old girl, the shier incompetence it takes to get to stage where a grown man has not resort but a stun gun should get you thrown of the force by its self.

It really isn't that hard to restrain a child without breaking their bones.

an officer is ten fold more likely to dislocate arms, snap bones, or cause massive physical trama to a pre-teen individual. after all they are trained to over power and force into submission Grown Male Adults. the taser was more than likely the safest solution considering the circimstances.
