Grand Theft Auto IV easily

Its the only game of 2008 i didn't like very much, it just wasn?t that fun. And i don't know why it got so many near to perfect scores when i found many flaws, glitches and many annoying bits. Well, i can guess actually. $$Kerching!$$
The story didn't interest me and didn't draw me in. It was like your average movie.
There are no checkpoints during missions so if you fail it for some stupid reason, you have to start all over again and that includes driving half-way through the city to get there. -_-
Driving cars felt like driving logs on wheels. Piloting helicopters is fiddly.
And the most annoying thing is "Hey Nico! Wanna go bowling?" "Hey Nico its me Jessica. (Can't remember the names), we haven't gone out for so long blah blah blah". Why do you have to take people out for no reason at all? And its so annoying when they are always calling you and just won't SHUT UP. Jesus Christ, i want to play the ****ing game. Not take some idiot out to dinner and live life in a virtual world thats exactly like living life in the real world, except that you don't accomplish anything.

I remember San Andreas being a lot more fun... sigh

Brawl and Fable II also get a mention. While both are good games, they get too much praise than they deserve really.

I even created a flaw list for Brawl

I had to go with GTA4 because it wasn't anywhere near the best game in its own subgenre (not for nothing did Saints Row 2 get Yahtzee's GotY award). IGN, Gamespot, Gamespy, and the rest of the enthusiast press couldn't wait to fellate the developers over what a masterpiece of art they'd created, never mind the fact that they forgot to make the game fun. When SR2 came out, it reminded everyone what the word game means in the first place.
Though I have to say I enjoyed GTA4 (as I was expecting a next gen GTA3 [and my expectations were met] and not the next gen San Andreas [it did fall far short of that]) I had the same feeling when I started playing SR2: this is what GTA4 should've been like.

Overrated?

No More Heroes. Everyone I know seems to percieve it as some kind of artistic deconstruction of the genre. I played it and it just felt broken.
If Suda51 really made the game repetitive and tedious on purpose (to make a statement; as is the excuse the fans of the game have been using) he's not just the worst game designer, but the most pretentious too.

SPORE

seriously, wtf.
I didn't include Spore in the poll because it wasn't very highly rated. Another one for the overHYPED game poll.
I actually think Spore was a little underrated, it just didn't live up to the hype that was drummed up about it for years.

GTA IV...for a good open world romp, i prefer Saint's Row 2...Fallout disappointed me a ton too...but it couldn't have lived up to my massive expectations.

GTA 4 was blown pretty far out of proportion, but I put Little Big Planet because I saw it played for the first time recently, and it didn't impress me at all. MGS 4 I think that I would like at least for a while, so I didn't put that.

Far Cry 2 is another game that a lot of people are mentioning here but that wasn't rated that high either. Besides, I don't know if it lived up to anything as I've never tried it & none of my friends have it either.

I was certainly tempted to hit Fable 2. But then I remembered a brief shot at MGS4 at a mates, coupled with his admittance that it pretty much represented most of the actual game part fo the game, so I really couln't help. As grindy as Fable was, that MGS plot just... Moving on.

For me it's LBP.

Tried Dead Space, but LBP won because it was just so repetetive and frustrating whereas Dead Space was just repetetive but dull. Kinda made me think after I died "Do I really care...?"

GTA, second best game score ever, highest ranked on MetaCritic, bah, it was one of the most dull games I've played for a long time. Saints Row 2 made it look dreary, drab, dark, and uninspired by comparision. Aside from the arduously morose lead, the piss annoying relatives and the cars that handled like they were drunk, it wasnt very fun, and while I might agree I would have enjoyed it a bit more if it hadnt been over hyped I still disagree with anyone vehemently if they suggest GTA:IV as the best game of 2008. I'd say MGS4 but thats me, that was a great game, cut scene heavy even for a fan but great all the same (seriously did anyone sit all the way through Liquid Ocelots speech and waving his hands around at the river side in East Europe a second time? God that was long...)

Also, I've noticed Far Cry 2 is quite overlooked this year. Maybe its why im enjoying it more now :)

I wouldnt call GTA4 a failure, but I would say it reached to far. Its almost sad to say that there was too much content in a game. We want a sandbox experience but there was too much sand.

It did seem like the same old story with a new character... If GTA is to survive they will need to bring in a new story arc.

so much choice! voted for MGS4, but really i'd wanna vote for everything but fallout 3, no more heroes and brawl... okay maybe brawl it was hyped as shit but delivered a little more than the rest by simply being a step sideways, not a step back after the hype blew it out of all proportions
