2008 was the year of overrated games. After trying all of the titles that got hyped up, I realized I wasn't really blown away by any of them. I probably would've liked some of these more if the critics weren't always saying how we would be blown away by them.

Sorry I can't fit everything onto the poll. Mention whatever's missing below.
I'll start:

Left 4 Dead
Mirror's Edge
Mega Man 9

Fable 2 and I have a huge grudge. I really really really wish I hadn't bought that game. Slim to no chance I could sell it off either. Grumble grumble.

Fable II seemed like a flop to me, haven't really heard anything from it ever since it came out.

LBP was a pretty overrated game, seemed like a lot of people got the wrong impression that it was going to be overly amazing and found it to be a next-gen Mario.

I am really glad that you didn't put Left 4 Dead on the poll (or I would have had to barf some flames all over you) and perplexed as to why you didn't put Mirror's Edge on there. I had people geeking out telling me that I just HAD to play it, so I did, and it was pretty boring. Curious but clumsy, like a teenage couple.

Can someone explain to me this obsession people seem to have of late with overrated games?

Most mainstream games are backed by extreme marketing. Yes, some of them are shit, but if they appeal to a wide enough audience, the marketing machine will push that turd until everyone has had a little taste. It's how Capitalism works. If you have a product, you do what you can to make sure as many people consume it as possible.

Why do people dwell on these things?

I was torn between No More Heros and LBP. I decided to hit NMH because that game just put me off fully and I couldn't even tell why. I hate when it happens but I went with my gut. I tried it over and over and i would just leave. As for LBP for who it targeted it was fine (I Guess) but as a whole ick on the high rate scale.

MGS 4 for me. Extended cutscenes and a pretentious bucketload of dialogue didn't pull the wool over my eyes as to the crapness of the story and shoddy gameplay mechanics. And AI. And Raiden.

Grand Theft Auto 4, it's the only one of the above list that I really couldn't enjoy, no matter how much I played it.

Left 4 Dead didn't make it on there because it just didn't live up to the ratings, it wasn't a poor game by any means but I didn't feel it was really groundbreaking either. It's the kind of game that makes me think that when the sequel comes out (provided they don't botch it), nobody will play the original anymore.

Mirrors Edge didn't make it up there because (by the critics at least)it wasn't really rated that high to begin with. If the list was overhyped games of 2008, Mirrors Edge would've probably replaced the no-hype but vastly overrated No More Heroes on the poll.

Fallout 3. It's not really that good. I can play Oblivion and I have almost the same experience but at least Oblivion has the Dark Brotherhood.

i had to vote Dead Space. i heard nothing but great things about it, but it wasnt that scary. it was just a predictable 3rd person shooter that didnt do anything groundbreaking. the monsters werent scary, some of the weapons were incredibly overpowerful, and there was no sign of any sort of pacing at all. not to mention a poor story. after that it had to be GTAIV, LBP, and Mirrors Edge.

Really? The small print on my box says "copyright 2008."

Oooh, maybe that's just because I have the "Enhanced Edition."

Well then, in that case, Dead Space. Yes, it is a good shooter. But it's not the remarkable shooter everyone seems to be making it out to be.

and yet, I am remarking on it. Funny how that works.

Good Question. But if this poll had to do with games that had too much marketing, I would've called it the overhyped game poll. Hype comes from marketing; ratings come from critics.

I'll use No More Heroes as an example. It was an poorly made crappy game that wasn't hyped up by the marketing but holds a lot of appeal to geeks & otaku. Thus it was given a much higher rating than it deserved by a vast majority of critics, who are geeks and otaku.

I don't mind that the critics enjoyed the game on a personal level but many of them weren't able to separate their personal enjoyment from the objective facts we want to know regarding the game software like weather it was rich or shallow. Oftentimes this leads to very badly made games getting high ratings and tedious minigames getting thumbs up.

You don't get the same thing in movies because the majority of movie critics aren't the kind of guys who like Police Academy movies.

I'm gonna have to go with GTA4.

It could've been the perfect game if it was, you know, fun.

BRAWL

Took the brilliant melee, dumbed down the move sets, dumbed down the levels, slowed the game down and altered the mechanics in a million subtle yet damaging ways. Certainly there is a lot more content, but the game doesn't play very well anymore.

Nice work Nintendo, you managed to break the greatest fighting game ever.

Left 4 Dead is a little groundbreaking because someone actually made a FUN game that you should play with your friends that includes an innovative idea (the AI director).
