Recently there was a thread on here about a rather sad case in America where a mother was giving her 8 year old daughter injections of botox into her face, well there's some good news from the BBC:

Eight-year-old Botox user taken into care in America [http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/13423966]

The low down is that the little girl has finally been taken away from her mother, who used to enter her into child beauty contests and so gave her botox treatment to "remove wrinkles". Personally I think it's good that this has happened as giving a young child a dangerous treatment solely for unneeded cosmetic reasons, especially when that is for entering her into what are in my opinion repulsive competitions, is irresponsible and selfish to the extreme.

So Escapists, do you think this was the right decision?

I actually thought nothing would happen, being America and all (no offense American escapists). And yeah i'm glad it's been resolved.

That lady wasn't the smartest so I for one am happy that they took the girl away or who knows what that lady would do to her next to "remove wrinkles"

There is no excuse in the world that would justify the mother's actions.
Absolutely none. This is nothing less than a severe form of child abuse.

I'm a bit torn on the issue myself. On one hand the mother did abuse the child in every sense of the way but on the other hand separating a child from its parents is always traumatizing for the child and foster homes aren't always a good thing for the child since adoption rates aren't that high. There's also bullying and acceptance to consider when you throw a child into an already established community.

I believe the mother truly cared for her child. She expressed genuine concern for the child by attempting to make it so the child wouldn't end up like her. A social worker supervising the case and the mother being forced to visit a councilor every week would have sufficed in my opinion.

Of course the media is going to paint the mother as the devil since all they care for is ratings and social workers will have no other choice but to comply since otherwise the huge public backlash would hurt their image. Sometimes I wonder what the world would be like if sensationalist "news" channels wouldn't exist.

That's good to hear, but taking her away from her mother is only the first step on a long and painful road. This girl will have some pretty serious body image issues as she gets older unless she gets a lot of therapy now. Hopefully they can get her some good help now while she is still young cause its a lot harder the older someone gets to break issues such as these.

It worked out and in the general sense, it worked out benefiting the most people this way. Cept the mother but...... well she's crazy, sorta. You know what I mean.

Children's beauty pageants should be illegal. Seriously. Teaching young children that unless they happen to look picture-perfect, they're not worth a damn thing. How can anyone fail to see the harm in that?

Yknow, i usually support councelling for parents when they get out of line like this, but the woman is completely unremorseful about risking her daughters health to make her prettyer.
Side effects of botox can range from permanent disfigurement, deformaties and death. You can choose to take those risks as an adult, but forcing it on a child is horrible.

Definitely. I can't stand it when people judge others for their appearance. ESPECIALLY when they force into their kids' heads that they should do the same. It either turns them into bullies or causes their self-esteem to turn to shit when they get older.
It's a good thing the kid was taken off her, both for the girl's sake and in spite of the mother. And for the sake of the girl's peers.

Think about it rationally for a moment, botox is a potent neurotoxin, the mother effectively risked her daughter's life to improve the girl's chances of winning a pageant. Perhaps she perceived the injections to be beneficial to her daughter, but that's flimsy justification if you consider the risks.

OK, here's a quick question: Do any of these people realise what botox treatments consist of? Here's a clue, people: It's an extremely deadly neurotoxin that comes from a bacillus bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. Its LD[sub]50[/sub] value is 1ng per kilogram of body mass. That is what she had injected into her daughter.

Moron.
I was ignorant on this issue, so thanks for the details. Why are people doing this ? Surely there's something else they inject themselves with, like self esteem or motivation to do facial exercises.

OT: Knowing the above from RAKtheundead. It is completely understandable the child was taken away. I'm sure someone highlighted it wasn't the best idea and she consequently ignored them more than once.

To quote RAKtheundead - Moron.

Yes, the mother is in no shape to take care of her child if she thinks giving an 8 year old botox is ok.

No offense taken, I'm American and I didn't think anything would happen either, its great that it has though, but this should never have happened in the first place

Completely the right decision by the social services. A parent has a responsibility to protect their children, not to inject them with drugs and parade them around on a stage thats basically right out of a paedophile's dream.

Shouldn't she also be teaching her kids that it's whats on the inside that counts? Coz that kid is either going to end up with suicidally low self-esteem, or end up bullying other kids who don't look "perfect".
